As one of my favorite authors, intellectuals, feminists, marxists, and people in general, her autobiography was extremely interesting for me. Some of the stances she holds now-just like her thoughts on lesbianism and how it holds a place in her life-were what she thinks, flawed as a younger woman. I think it shows the similarities she has to most people. Her thoughts and opinions are corruptible, like others, but not entirely correct without complete reflection and observation.
Iâm going back to Angela Davisâs homophobic description of the dykes she met in jail that she wrote before coming out and I canât get over how much Iâve seen the same basic framing before:
[âSince the majority of the prisoners seemed to be at least casually involved in the family structure, there had to be a great number of lesbians throughout the jail. Homosexuality is bound to occur on a relatively large scale in any place of sexually segregated confinement. I knew this before I was arrested. I was not prepared, however, for the shock of seeing it so thoroughly entrenched in jail life. There were the masculine and feminine role-playing women; the former, the butches, were called âhe.â During the entire six weeks I spent on the seventh floor, I could not bring myself to refer to any woman with a masculine pronoun, although some of them, if they hadnât been wearing the mandatory dresses, would never have been taken for women. Many of themâboth the butches and the femmesâhad obviously decided to take up homosexuality during their jail terms in order to make that time a little more exciting, in order to forget the squalor and degradation around them. When they returned to the streets, they would rejoin their men and quickly forget their jail husbands and wives. An important part of the family system was the marriages. Some of them were extremely elaborateâwith invitations, a formal ceremony, and some third person acting as the âminister.â The âbrideâ would prepare for the occasion as if for a real wedding. With all the marriages, the seeking of trysting places, the scheming that went on by one woman to catch another, the conflicts and jealousiesâwith all thisâhomosexuality emerged as one of the centers around which life in the House of Detention revolved. Certainly, it was a way to counteract some of the pain of jail life; but objectively, it served to perpetuate all the bad things about the House of Detention. âThe Gay Lifeâ was all-consuming; it prevented many of the women from developing their personal dissatisfaction with the conditions around them into a political dissatisfaction, because the homosexual fantasy life provided an easy and attractive channel for escape for many.â]
so many different things to pull out. That butches and femmes are victims who lean on each other in times of crisis and forget about each other as soon as their circumstances are improved, her real horror at the mismatch of genitals and body arrangements on display around her, how frustrated she is by the people she needs to become self-sacrificing communist heroes sinking into distraction instead, her sympathy for those who use skin contact and social relations and healing sex to cope with the overwhelming violence of jail life warring with her disgust for escapism and wasted time, the posing of gay life as an all consuming false identity that takes the place of a real personality, her awareness of how much she was able to accomplish as far as challenging the administration in her short time there compared with what she thinks the other prisoners SHOULD have been able to push for if they werenât so distracted by sex and family instead.
she recanted all of it later of course, her foreword is full of disappointment at how little she understood when she was that age, but the fact that she did think and feel that is timeless.
got this comment on the House vs. Hannibal poll so tell me who's a better therapist in the tags.

Thinking back to that one post about how every batkid needs to pick a persona they get to swear in. I would like to expand it.
Dick swears all the time, but he does it in other languages. He picks a language for each persona to swear in and sticks to it. He did still do his whole âAw, fiddlesticks!â routine as Robin, mainly just to watch everyoneâs faces when he did it. (But everyone remembers the time Robinâs leg was broken and he just screamed âFUCK!â so loud that the entire battlefield turned around in shock.)
Jason knew that thanks to classism, people would assume he swore even if he didnât. So like, why bother restraining it any more than he absolutely had to? As Robin, he didnât swear even when he really wanted to, though sometimes he slipped up when caught off-guard or when chatting with someone who knows him in both identities. (On one very memorable occasion, Robin got so mad he actually shoved his fist into his own mouth to muffle the screaming rant of obscenity he needed to express.)
(As the Red Hood, Jason doesnât really give a fuck, but he still falls back into his old habit of cleaning up his language when in costume. Itâs very funny to hear him say something like, âWell, golly! Youâve gotta be shitting me.â)
Tim Drake is a proper young man who doesnât swear, even when heâs hurt (he has totally stolen that biting-my-fist move from Jason.) Robin swears like a fuckinâ sailor all day every day, to the point where not a single goddamn hero in the entire caped community that has ever worked even adjacent to him has not heard, âAsk me if I fucking give a shit,â muttered under Robinâs breath directly into the com line when someone tries to correct him on something. He will switch languages to insult you in the one you best understand, too. His friends have a running bet about how many of those languages Robin actually speaks, versus how many he just learned how to cuss people out in (when asked, Robin just smirks and says, âHow fucking many do you [always a swear from a different language, usually one they havenât heard before] think?â)
Damian mostly sticks with old-timey faux-Shakespearean insults, mainly because itâs very funny when adults canât figure out what to punish him for when he sasses them. As Robin, Damian likes using animals in place of swears, and just telling people to go fuck themselvesâit keeps them on their toes.
Steph does not fuckinâ care.
Duke canonically swears both in & out of costume, and I love that for him.
