Petition: Save Good Omens, Fire Neil Gaiman

Please consider signing the petition below that I created this morning since it seems that we have not yet formally asked for this to happen and it must. I've included the petition text here as well:

We, the fan community of Good Omens, are calling on Amazon to fire Neil Gaiman and replace him with a new showrunner for Season 3.

After several days of digesting the abhorrent abuses of power to which Gaiman self-admits guilt, it is evident that the values of this long-running community are not reflected by Mr. Gaiman. Many of us are sexual assault survivors ourselves and all of us are allied with those who are. We feel very strongly that we cannot financially support Good Omens with Mr. Gaiman still in a position of power within it and are calling for his immediate dismissal.

As a decades-old fandom who has long-since proven reach and spending power, we feel confident that Amazon will see the value in producing more Good Omens the way we request: with Mr. Gaiman gone from the process.

Thank you.

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.

Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.

In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:

I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

NOTE: All of the above also applies to Amazon products featuring stolen artwork, etc., so fan artists should check too!

“Alexa!” I call,”set mirror font color to blood red,”

The voice responds, “your font color is now blood red.

Oh, I love my Amazon smart mirror I thought to myself.

A demon writes messages on your mirror in blood, but they’re useful messages, things like “Don’t forget you have yoga at 2” or “You’re out of milk”.

War on humanity in an ice cream franchise shop

Cloudy day, windy

Your boss' makin a loss

But I told you I'd never eaten this kind of ice cream before

And now I'm back for a second helping

First day it was sunny and I was in a good mood

Today I got no such excuse

The word "smile" is overused by corporate and music that's gentrification misspelled

So I'll commit the greatest rebellion of the industry:

You just looked at me.

Desperate claws in a sunny smile I've trained to be a good customer to the service

I ask you if I should take a cup or cone, your opinion

Well, it's my choice

But you can give me a little more in a cup.

I laugh too loud. Answer too loud. You're making money, I'm spending money.

'i hope to see you again, miss.'

That's not part of the script.

They don't say miss here.

WHEN THEY ACCIDENTALLY WAKE YOU UP FROM A NAP — HAIKYUU

WHEN THEY ACCIDENTALLY WAKE YOU UP FROM A NAP — HAIKYUU

WHEN THEY ACCIDENTALLY WAKE YOU UP FROM A NAP — HAIKYUU

feat — timeskip!atsumu, mattsun, bokuto, iwaizumi + suna

warnings — none all fluff! f! leaning petnames.

note — ‘ve just woken up very grumpy from a nap and wrote this hmph!

WHEN THEY ACCIDENTALLY WAKE YOU UP FROM A NAP — HAIKYUU

ఌ ATSUMU hadn’t expected you to be asleep when he returned from practice so he called for you as he always would when he walked into the living room of your home. he freezes when he sees your previously sleeping figure jolt and shake awake at the boom of his voice, rubbing at your eyes with a sniffle before shooting him a lazy sort of glare. “‘tsumuuuu ‘m sleepy why’d you do that.” you whimper, watching the blonde slap a hand over his mouth before approaching you, pouting as you blink up at him through slightly glassy eyes “‘m sorry baby, didn’t know don’t cry kay? don’t wanna see ya upset come on let me cuddle ya alright, ya can sleep on me how ‘bout that?” atsumu coo’s, his tone smooth and gentle as you nod drowsily in response, feeling him shuffle in next to you on the couch, followed by a few chaste kisses on your forehead as he rubs soothing circles against your waist, his fingers tracing along the skin while you nuzzle into him “there we go baby, go ta sleep alright ‘s good.”

ఌ MATTSUN he’d noticed you fell asleep on the couch so he was only trying to move you into a more comfortable position but he ended up accidentally waking you instead. “issei, what’re you doin’ ‘m tired stop.” you grumble and issei’s eyes widen in response before he speaks “shhhh babygirl, just makin’ you more comfortable ‘s all, don’t want you getting sore—come on, up you go.” the dark haired male drawls, and you whine as your pulled you into his chest but you feel yourself relax at the familiar warmth before nuzzling deeper into him, his arms wrapping around you tightly. issei’s fingers trace along your skin to rub soothing circles into your scalp as he places an open mouthed kiss against your temple—allowing his natural warmth to lull you back to sleep as he speaks softly against your cheek, his voice a low rumble against his chest “see that’s better, right? ‘ve got you.”

ఌ IWAIZUMI he got caught in the rain so it’s not his fault when he slips in the doorway of your home, not realising you were asleep in the living room. “fuck!” iwaizumi groans, steadying himself before freezing when he sees your dazed figure shoot up from the couch, a sob bubbling from your lips at being woken up so abruptly. hajime’s quick to strip off his wet clothes and be by your side, hushing you softly “hajime, i was asleep.” you mumble and you watch him soften at your words “shit, ‘m sorry babe, i didn’t know.” he hums, his hand cupping your cheek gently as he smiles at you, wiping any tears that managed to escape with his thumb as he places a gentle kiss to your forehead. he’s quick to move and grab the blanket from the corner, approaching you once more “come on doll, cmeer don’t want you getting sick.” hajime murmurs, and you shuffle when he lies beside you, pulling you against his chest and wrapping you both in the blanket before tucking you in, smiling softly as he continues to rub soothing circles into your cheek while you drift off.

ఌ BOKUTO he was just excited to see you when he returned home from practice, slamming the door open with a bright “i’m home, babe!” which unfortunately caused you to jolt from your previously relaxing slumber. it’s almost immediate the way he slams his hands over his mouth with a gasp, approaching you quickly when he notices the pout on your lips and you can already see the guilt in his eyes when he flops down on top of your figure, nuzzling into the crook of your neck. “‘m sorry, baby! don’t be mad, we can nap together right now—i’ll keep you warm.” bokuto’s babbles a little, pulling back to blink up at you with a pout of his own before placing a few kisses against your lips “just was excited to see you, babe.” he breathes, falling onto his side and pulling you against him and when he wraps you in his large arms you don’t even find yourself wanting to complain.

ఌ SUNA once he had noticed you napping he was trying to crawl right in beside you, but instead managed to shake you awake in the progress. he stiffens immediately when your eyes blink awake with a wobbly pout, grumbling up at him as you rub your eyes “rinnnnn” you babble, huffing under your breath when you feel him shuffle in beside you and pull you close, guiding your head gently into the crook of his neck as he finally gets comfortable. “sorry pretty baby, just wanted to cuddle. go back to sleep.” suna drawls, the low tone of his voice soothing enough to have your eyes closing once more while surrounded by his natural warmth. his fingers trace their way up your spine softly as he rests his cheek against your own. making sure to check you’re asleep before his own eyes close.

Jan + Feb Reading Wrap Up

I will be the first to admit that it’s a little late for a February wrap up when it’s nearly April, but I wasn’t planning on doing one until recently, so fuck off.

Jan + Feb Reading Wrap Up

Ushers by Joe Hill - Short Story (4 stars)

I’ve been a Joe Hill kick recently, since his new novel comes out in October. Ushers is a short story that follows a young man who can see grim reapers, and this ability affects his life in both positive and negative ways. I gave this story 4 stars. It was okay, but I don’t really like short stories for the simple reason that they are too short! It was creepy, it was well written, and an overall interesting read, so if you want something spooky, you want to give Joe Hill a shot, or you just have a free lunch break, take a gander at it.

Jan + Feb Reading Wrap Up

The Pram by Joe Hill - Short Story (3.5 stars)

Another Joe Hill short story, this entry follows a husband who comes across a supernatural pram and, as you can imagine, creepy chaos ensues. This was a fun read. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Ushers. I don’t enjoy stories that are particularly hopeless, and I also don’t fully enjoy stories where the main character is evil, an unreliable narrator, or crazy, because it tends to make me sympathize with them less. It was well written, just as Ushers was, and I would like to know more about the lore of the story. The background of the story seems so much more interesting than the story itself.

Ancestor by Scott Sigler - Novel (3 stars)

Ancestor follows a team of experts as they attempt to craft a brand new species with the specific purpose of xenotransplantation. In the process, they create hungry entities that stalk the humans they were created to help. You’ll like this novel if you enjoyed Jurassic Park. It has a healthy balance of likable and unlikable characters. This was a fine novel. I gave it three stars. I wasn’t angry, I read it, but had I known what my experience would be, I probably would’ve gone with something else. Ancestor has the feel of a big budget action movie that you go to see on a weekday because nothing else is playing that evening. Or better yet, some random action thriller you found on Netflix that you turn on while you clean the house. It’s fine. My only major problem with the story is that the monsters weren’t scary to me. The descriptions made them sound like mutated chickens, and the image was more surreal than it was scary. I don’t know if I can recommend this. I don’t think I’m in the target demographic. You’ll probably like this novel if you enjoy James Patterson or Michael Crichton.

Stones to Abbigale by Onision - Novel (0 stars)

Holy shit. This was the worst book I've ever read. Ever. I’m not kidding. I read this as part of a reading challenge, and I have so many regrets. The only good thing to come out of it was my new skill of being able to stop reading books that I hate. If I start a book and I don’t jive with it, it’s a DNF now. I can’t ever get the time back that I wasted reading this garbage. At one point, I crumpled up a page, threw it in the toilet and pissed on it. Click here or here for more details.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson - Novel (4.5 stars)

I’ve been hearing about Brandon Sanderson for years so I was excited to read his stuff for the first time. This book was good, had some really solid worldbuilding, but I’ll warn you, it is long and it is part of a series. The final 15% made me feel like I was on drugs and I was losing my goddamn mind. Trying to explain the ending to the uninitiated is like trying to explain Endgame to someone who has never seen a marvel movie. It would be five stars but I didn’t enjoy the pacing of the novel. For a more in-depth review, click here.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer - Novel (0.5 stars)

Annihilation follows a government funded team as they enter a mysterious land afflicted with paranormal activity known as Area X. I didn’t like this book. The issue is that I don’t enjoy ambiguous stories and I didn’t know that’s what I was walking into. Who is that? What is this? What does that mean? Why is this happening? How does the story end? Who knows? Who cares?! If I’m going to devote my time to a novel, I would like to A) relate to the characters, B) understand what is going on, and C) know that there was a point to what I just read. Even stories that aren’t inherently deep, like the Fast and the Furious franchise, have a point. And the point of the Furious franchise is to entertain. The Hunger Games is a critique of elitism and power structure. A story should be about something and if it’s not about anything, it should at least try to entertain. I didn’t know what Annihilation was about or what it was trying to do. My problem with ambiguous stories is that a lot of them are pointless meanderings masquerading as deep and complex story telling. You can write virtually anything and say, “Well, it’s not supposed to make sense!” When I finished Annihilation I was left no different than the start of the story. It made me feel nothing.

And this is a side tangent, but what is with the Snowbird thing? For the uninitiated, the main character’s husband had a nickname for her, and the nickname was Snowbird. He kept repeating it over and over again in every flashback and it annoyed me. A part of it made have been the fault of the narrator, as I listened to the audiobook and her drawl on the word made me want to slit my wrists.

I’m left asking, what was the point? It was a six hour audiobook, why did I devote so much time listening to that when I gained nothing? Not even entertainment? I was bored and annoyed. The climax was confusing and lackluster. I saw the sequel on sale this week for 1.25 and I had to remind myself how much I hated the first book, but come on! A 1.25?! Can you think of a place where you can get a book for a 1.25? I might go back and see if it’s still there. For a 1.25 I’d buy twelve more Onision books.

Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham - Novel (4 stars)

It should surprise nobody that I am a Gilmore Girls fan. When I discovered Lauren Graham had a memoir, I jumped at the chance to read it, and it was splendid. The novel includes dozens of anecdotes (funny, sad, and everything in between), focused on Gilmore Girls and the overarching structure of Graham’s career. I highly recommend this if you like Lauren Graham or Gilmore Girls. It’s funny, it’s touching, and I just discovered that Graham has written a fiction novel which I will be reading very soon.

Jan + Feb Reading Wrap Up

Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare - Novel (3.5 stars)

Clown in a Cornfield follows Quinn Maybrook, who, after moving to a small town, finds herself trapped in a cornfield with her new friends and several chainsaw-wielding psychopaths wearing clown costumes. This was a good book, though I was a little disappointed. If you’re on BookTok, you know people have talked up this novel, and I was expecting a little more. For one thing, I didn’t feel very connected to the protagonist. We know how she feels and we know about her past, but we don’t really see a lot of her personality. In larger conversations, it feels as if she’s just a bystander. Other than that, things were okay. It was enjoyable, and I wasn’t really creeped out while reading this. It is classified as a horror, but I’d say it’s closer to a suspense novel. There’s a sequel, but I probably won’t read it. This could be a standalone novel if you don’t read the epilogue.

Thanks for reading. I may do these monthly or bi-monthly, I haven’t decided yet.

We need everyone's help right now to protect the rainforest and Indigenous People

The Amazon Rainforest is under a massive threat. I know you've heard this a million times, but this is different. There is a piece of legislation that will decimate the rights of Indigenous people of Brazil, who have been protecting the rainforest. It's unfathomably bad. It has majority support. And they're voting tomorrow. As reported here, the Bill allows "the Brazilian government to find energy resources, set up military bases, develop strategic roads, and implement commercial agriculture on protected Indigenous tribal lands, without any prior discussion with the affected peoples."

The thing you can do—and I know this sounds overly simple—is sign this petition—and tell your friends to do the same: SIGN HERE.

As reported here, the Bill allows "the Brazilian government to find energy resources, set up military bases, develop strategic roads, and implement commercial agriculture on protected Indigenous tribal lands, without any prior discussion with the affected peoples."

Again, this bill has majority support. You may be wondering, why will a petition signed by people who don't live in Brazil make any difference? Because it will give those opposing it political air cover. It will show the world is with them.

But we need a LOT of signatures.

Please do this simple act and spread the word.
