This is a good take. I love writing pining. I love writing romances where the two are absolutely devoted to each other in life and death and everything in between; even if they don't explicitly say it, and they have no hope of any sort of gain, you see them quietly and consistently working for each other's good behind the scenes for nothing but the sheer love of that person.
we think pining is romantic because fidelity is romantic. the reason it pulls at our heartstrings is less the idea of a longing that can never be satisfied and more the idea of someone being faithful to their love even when they’re not getting anything from it
