It's Finally Happening - Changes to Dream SMP, 3rd Life/Last Life, and other SMP fandoms!

Hello!

Some exciting changes are coming to Video Blogging RPF over the next few weeks! We are happy to announce that Dream SMP, 3rd Life | Last Life SMP Series, Empires SMP, and a number of other Survival Multiplayer (SMP) Minecraft roleplay fandoms will be getting their very own fandom tags. These changes will be starting 10 May 2022, beginning with Dream SMP.

We want to thank you for your patience both in getting to this point, and in the coming weeks as these changes take place! Our volunteers have worked hard towards this change since 2021, and we will do our best to make this transition go as smoothly as possible.

Reader Appreciation

I’ve been seeing a lot of amazing posts lately thanking fanfic writers for that good, good content that we’re all disappearing into right now. And I love these posts, and FUCK YES, the healing power of art during these rough times, it can’t be said enough. But I feel like there’s something missing from these posts, and that’s the readers.

A lovely friend of mine recently shared something with the caveat that they “contribute basically nothing to fandom” and I was fucking floored. Like. This person has made playlists for fic, and shared art, and reached out to me to talk about my stories and other stories and like - that is the Work. They made me feel like my shitty writing was good enough to share, and that made me write more, and connected me with more people, and that sort of contribution doesn’t get acknowledged enough. I don’t write fiction because I have to, or for the likes or hits or whatever; I write it because I have a story I want to tell. On the days when my brain is cooperating, writing is a pleasure. On the days when my brain isn’t cooperating, comments from readers make my words feel meaningful anyway. This isn’t a one-way street, a producer/consumer situation. Or at least, it doesn’t feel like that to me.  And my best writing has been done when people are holding me accountable, or are pushing me to do better and I’m so grateful for that. And so grateful for you.

So. To the readers who comment on every chapter. To the readers who leave thoughtful essays in the comments and the readers who leave 😭❤️😱 or keysmashes. To the readers who are inspired for the first time to make art or write something themselves. To the readers who leave kudos. To the readers too anxious to comment (I’ve been there, sat in a space where I had no idea how to express how a story made me feel) and the fandom ghosts who dip in and read and vanish.

To readers who like or reblog or share or rec or send messages or don’t do any of these things.

So did Ranboo start in the Dream SMP by being revived by Dream?

Cus he only showed up after Dream got the revive book, right? And we KNOW that his enderwalk state was working with Dream, so maybe Ranboo died a long time ago and maybe the first thing Dream did with it was test it by bringing his once-ally back to life. Low risk, low reward.

Except it didn't work. Ranboo didn't remember anything. Maybe it'd been too long, or Dream hadn't gotten it right yet.

Which is why when he joined he tried to kill Ranboo. To "reset him" or something. Maybe this got rid of two of his canon lives, or maybe he died when Sam killed him because he was already living a borrowed life and he had less than none left at that point

all the tips I found for drawing a fantasy map are like :) “here’s a strategy to draw the land masses! here’s how to plot islands!” :) and that’s wonderful and I love them all but ??? how? do y'all decide where to put cities/mountains/forests/towns I have my map and my land but I’m throwing darts to decide where the Main Citadel where the Action Takes Place is

Thinkin about how the generational gaps are getting larger and how it's getting more difficult to understand what previous/new generations have gone through because our experiences are so different.

People used to be raised in similar environments to their parents which meant that they could understand each other properly, now it's almost like we're from different cultures.

I don't know much about our recent history. I had Covid, what did my parents have?

because i see a lot of people either de-ageing him (making him seem 12/13) or acting as if he’s older than 17 / as if his age doesn’t matter. i think both are interesting because in my mind ? c!tommy is the EPITOME of a mentally ill / traumatised seventeen year old. his age plays such a huge part in why he acts Like That lol.

just like c!wilbur’s age sort of ,, puts him in the mindset of governance and the naive belief that “others are corrupted by power, not me though, i’m mature / old enough to handle the responsibility well”, and just like c!dream being twenty is so representative of the twenty-year-old belief of “i can change the world MY way, it’s my responsibility, i alone can carry and change the world” — c!tommy’s worldview is SO indicative of his age.

everything about canon c!tommy reminds me of being sixteen/seventeen and struggling with unsavoury truths along with the horror of trauma — that teenager feeling of the whole world being against you, desperately looking for an older figure to look up to but being viciously independent at the same time, being destroyed when said older figure turns out not to be as good as you thought they were ,,, c!tommy idolises c!wilbur to an unhealthy amount, to the point when he realises how bad c!wilbur is for him, he still struggles to abandon him. there’s something about realising your older brother / role model / person you’ve hero-worshipped for years and wanted to be just like is Shitty that reminds me of being sixteen and realising that the older adults in your life aren’t as infallible as you thought.

being seventeen and believing that you can change the whole world while also hating the world for taking your childhood/enjoyment away from you, that black and white morality because anything else makes your life/trauma so much harder to deal with ,, maybe i just knew too many people at seventeen with this kind of trauma but c!tommy reminds me SO much of me when i was a few years younger ? same world view, same struggle between believing you can change everything and the ‘i’m just sixteen, why the fuck should i’ mentality.

that sort of struggle when everything is falling apart around you, and you want to be the one holding yourself together so you do stupid, childish things (grief, steal, just like you used to when you were happy / free to be a kid) but you also sort of resent people for making you want to be the strong one.

everything about c!tommy screams ‘seventeen’ — a young adult, becoming disillusioned to the world around him, desperately trying to avoid realising black-and-white morality isn’t so black-and-white at all, trying to shoulder the world but wishing you could rewind time to be unburdened by the changing people / world around you.

he’s definitely not a ‘kid’ (12/13), and i still wouldn’t class exile as child abuse, because the dynamic there was different, but it also doesn’t feel right to completely disregard the fact that c!tommy is still ,, seventeen. sixteen, at the time when most of his major arcs were happening. his relationship with c!wilbur, his obsession over the disks, his trauma, the way he views morality + evil, his selflessness vs self centred view of conflict ,, all of it screams ‘teenager’.

he’s just a teenager who was thrust very suddenly into a game of war + politics that escalated way out of his understanding, and he’s still trying to make sense of it all. he doesn’t have all the puzzle pieces and for the first time he’s really aware of that fact, and he’s realised the people he looks up to don’t have all the pieces either. c!tommy is loud mouthed and crude because teenagers often are — but in the same way, teenagers are often just beginning to understand how fucked-up the world can be, and i think c!tommy’s arcs with the revival + las nevadas + wilbur’s short story show him on this journey.

minecraft body language related things

- anything related to crouching. slowly going up to someone while crouching to be sneaky. spam crouching in “friend?? friend!!” crouching and looking down because you’re sad :(

- punching up in the air enthusiastically like “hey let’s go!!” punching the blocks underneath you rapidly as if moving your hands around in conversation. affectionately punching other players like you would pull someone’s ear.

- i dunno if this is just my group but full netherite players criting each other with axes and swords because it barely does any damage and it’s fun

- aggressive spinning to goof off

- almost-but-not eating something to make obnoxious noises

- that thing streamers/youtubers do when you can tell they’re staring at themselves in f5 to talk to an audience

- also, when you can TELL someone has paused to look at you in optifine zoom

- forcing yourself into swim/fly mode on land for maximum silly mode.

- waiting for someone to find where you are so you’re like. in a body of water going straight up and down with a riptide trident until they do. or just flying up and down with elytra

- getting in a boat on land and spinning in circles like “hey I’m bored let’s go”

- slowly swapping out tools either as a threat, or to dramatically reveal what item you have

- putting armor on as a threat, or taking it off as a “I’m relaxed” thing

- playing hot potato with a junk item neither player wants and chasing each other around with it

- i just think running around with a loaded crossbow out is really funny. you look like an oblivion npc

- loading up a trident throw but Not letting it go and holding it back as a threat

- rapidly flicking levers/opening chests/pressing buttons/etc to annoy the other person, especially while they’re talking

- closing a door in someone’s face

- playing a block in front of someone. they break it. you place it again. this continues for two more minutes

- jumping down at someone from a higher place like “HI I’M HERE NOW!”

- sitting in cauldrons. become soup.

- music disc dancing. moving around as much as possible for pigstep and slow crouching to cat

- being offended/sad etc and digging down a few blocks to sulk

- anything along the lines of a player taking time to make something for a joke. someone says “let’s talk” and the other busts out a crafting table and crafts a stair so they can pretend to sit

The MCYT AO3 Tags & How To Fix Them

(I attempted to write this post in a more ND-friendly way, since it’s long. Hopefully it helps? <3)

Hello, MCYTblr! I’ve been seeing many posts around recently about the MCYT tags on Archive of Our Own, and even though this is not a new problem and one that I and others have been trying to fix for years, I think it’s time that we all work together to solve this issue.

But first, what’s wrong with the MCYT tags?

There are three major issues with the current tags, from what I’ve observed. In order of least to most important:

Hermitcraft as a fandom tag is currently Hermitcraft RPF. This is incorrect because most if not all of the works in this tag are not RPF (real person fiction) and instead deal with the Minecraft personas, a subtle difference that Ao3 currently does not recognize. It needs to become Hermitcraft (Web Series).

Dream SMP does not have a fandom tag, and those writing for it are forced to use some combination of Minecraft (Video Game) and Video Blogging RPF. This is similar to the first point in that people are writing about the characters, not the streamers (at least in most cases), and so neither of those tags are actually applicable. It’s messy and disorganized and Dream SMP needs to be separated. This tag should be Dream SMP (Web Series).

Character tags for both fandoms and others contain the real name of the creator in question, as close to their full name as possible. While this is completely logical in fictional fandoms and very useful for avoiding confusion there, for MCYT, these tags are uncomfortable and often more confusing for readers and writers alike. Many creators are not open with their real names, though their names might be out there, and they especially shouldn’t be used in conjunction with the fictional characters they play.

Now, how do we fix these problems?

It’s actually quite simple! Just navigate to Archive of Our Own, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click Technical Support and Feedback. This will open a feedback form that looks like this.

But Sy, how do I fill out a good feedback form?

I’m glad you asked! First of all, make the summary short and to-the-point. For example, ‘Dream SMP fandom tag needed’ or ‘Important issues with Video Blogging RPF character tags’. Then, explain the problem clearly and concisely, in terms that someone who doesn’t know MCYT could understand. Finally, go back through and add links. Link anything that supports your claims. Wiki articles, news articles, Twitch clips, things that show that you’re telling the truth. For example, if I was explaining why the tags should be changed back to usernames, not real names, I could link a clip of Wilbur talking about his character on Dream SMP and all the behind-the-scenes writing as evidence for the streamers being separate from the characters we write about.

All we have to do is fill out enough of these forms, with enough evidence to support our requested changes, and then eventually, Ao3 will listen to us. Ao3 is a good site and it’s nobody’s fault that these tags are currently like this–the tag wranglers probably just aren’t familiar with MCYT and are therefore working with what they have available to them.

If you have the time, please fill out a feedback form on one of these three issues (not all three in one, as we want Ao3 to understand–if you want to cover all three, just send in three comments). We want these problems fixed and this is how we do it. We work together.

We’ve done amazing things as a fandom before. Fanfiction is an incredible and valued part of our community. Please, let’s fix this.
