What she says: I'm fine.

What she means: In Deaf West's Spring Awakening, when Moritz doesn't walk Ilse home, she says "You know, by the time you finally wake up, I'll be lying on some trash heap". And because in this revival Moritz is deaf and doesn't hear her say that which adds a whole other level of sadness as when he calls for her after, it wasn't him just feeling bad after her remark, rather him just wanting to be with her and him realizing that he should have taken that chance to be happy.

Patrick Hoffman Director of film archive for new york public library: Seeking the release of Deaf West Spring Awakening Broadway show from NY archive room
Deaf West Spring Awakening began in LA and during its run there it managed to win many awards for their performance; several Ovation awards as well as Broadway World LA awards and they are expected to make a splash at the Tonys for their Broadway run. This production brought a level of diversity and inclusion never before seen on Broadway before. Once on Broadway, the show received unanimous critical reviews from all over the US as well as a British review. New York Times, LA times, Wall street Journal, American Theatre and multiple more publications gave it must see praise. When all was said and done they were listed on 16 publications as a top 10 show of 2015 and had 2 performers listed in the top 10 individual performances of 2015 in the Huffington Post. Throughout the run the positive reviews and awards were seemingly never ending. Historically they brought many firsts to Broadway including the first wheel chair bound broadway performer, the first performer to both sign and voice his role, the first lottery conducted in sign language and english simultaniously. There was much history made with their performance and it was fortunately preserved by the New York Pulbic Library Theatre Archives. While this production won many awards, received much critical acclaim, and made multiple historical Broadway firsts; those amazing accomplishments alone are not enough to seek release of the archived film in my opinion. The run on Broadway coincided with the 25th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act and it is because of that coincidence that i can think of no better way to honor it then to expand on what Deaf West accomplished on Broadway by taking accessibility to a new level never before seen. Any deaf theatre goer on Broadway was able to see a broadway show any night they wanted to without worrying if it was a captioned performance. Now for the hoped for result of this petition. It is my upmost hope that the director of film archives, Patrick Hoffman, will see the importance of this film being accessible to all and not just people that are in New York. I am formally requesting , along with all those that signed this petition and countless others, that copies of this film be given to every deaf school across America as well as every deaf library in America. Additionally, i would ask that for those that would wish to see this historical event that copies of the film would be available for purchase or rent. Think of the students in deaf schools, up to now they can be told that they can do anything they wish, that there are no limits. Imagine, though, how much better it would be to be able to show them the truth to that. Thisis very personal to me as i am the father of a deaf girl. Yes she was in the show but i remember when she was in school and i told her that she could do anything but the idea of being able to show her would have made it so much easier to believe. I sincerely hope you can see the importance of this request.

Sign this petition if you want Deaf West’s ‘Spring Awakening’ video footage that the New York Public Library has in the Archives.

A releasing of this video, would make this video accessible for everyone on to see. This version of Spring Awakening is so important, more than just telling the story of miscommunication between adult & children, and languages. It’s also important because of the ability for anyone to watch it.

Please Sign.

Y'all can like JD and ship him and Veronica if you want, but remember not to excuse his actions. He killed three teenagers and tried to blow up his school, and because he did that he is a terrorist.

Was his life incredibly sad? Yes. Would things have turned out better if this and that didn’t happen? Yes. But we can’t overlook just how horrible he was by the movie’s end. Heather, Kurt, and Ram were all terrible people, but they were also kids. They were all close to leaving Sherwood, and hopefully becoming better people once they were in the real world, but they never got to know the real world because of JD.

And JD abused Veronica. Was JD entirely to blame? No, some fault fell on Veronica, but it was always clear that JD was the mastermind and at the end of the day Veronica was a victim. He tried to get in her head, and convince her she wanted Kurt and Ram dead, he tricked her into helping him murder them. When Veronica was trying to leave him, he pinned her to his couch and forcibly kissed her. When she faked her suicide, he was already climbing into her window to kill her.

JD is a sad character, terribly sad. Certain interactions between him and Big Bud Dean drive me to near tears sometimes, but he’s still a terrorist and he’s still abusive. You can make JD blogs, you can sympathize with him, and you can ship him with Veronica. Just understand that you cannot excuse him, you can’t want a relationship like he and Veronica had, and you certainly can’t want a JD for yourself to fall in love with in real life. That beings said, please take these words to heart next time you watch the movie and musical and imagine yourself with a person like JD. Thank you, I love all.

He’s a Real Boy! An Introduction to Humanizing Your Characters

Characters. Fun to invent, occasional hell to develop. Sometimes you end up with a flat, two-dimensional character that just falls short of being interesting or recognizable. How we do fix this? We fix by humanizing them, making them more recognizable by giving them character aspects of traits. Even if your character isn’t necessarily human, you still need to humanize them in some way. Humanizing allows for likeable and believable characters and allows the reader to empathize with your character, which we want them to. We want identifiable characters, because when your character is identifiable, we are far more likely to suck poor unfortunate souls into the worlds we’ve created and make sure they never, ever, leave. Having a character that is perfect and lives a perfect life and never does anything that any regular person would do is kind of silly. So how do we go about creating a humanized character?

For the purpose of this post, we’re going to create a character. We’ll take a chiseled chin, throw in a nice Armani suit, dark curly locks, and eyes like the sea before a storm. He has a very big intellect, a heart of gold, and musical talent as well. He moonlights as a superhero. He is a perfect man. A delicious, perfect man. But wait! A perfect man is too intimidating and your readers will have trouble forming an attachment to him! He’s two dimensional!  How do we fix this? Here are some quick solutions.

QUICK THROW SOME FLAWS AT HIM. Wait, what? Flawed character are human characters. No one is perfect, and we all know that on some deep personal level, so why should your characters be? Okay, so we’re going throw a crippling fear of water at him, an inability to properly manage his funds, and a habit of cutting himself when he’s peeling apples and then swearing like a sailor. Woah, suddenly he’s become a little more developed and human and a little more interesting now.

GIVE HIM REAL LIFE ACTIVITIES AND EXPLORE THE MUNDANE. This includes both the good and the bad. People do things. People have to make their own beds, do their own laundry, and bathe and feed themselves. It brings your characters back down to earth. A very good friend pointed out the other day while we were skyping and I was squeezing the pus out of my cat’s behind (abscesses, everyone), that while gross, the activity is still something that I have to do in the midst of my oh-so-glamourous life. There are things that can’t be avoided. So we’re going to have him taking care of his cat’s swollen bum when he gets home from a long day fighting crime, give him a dirty roommate to pick up after, and a wilting tomato plant to take care of. On that note, let’s…

GIVE HIM SOME HOBBIES. Hobbies are huge in figuring out a personality, and almost everyone has one. Some of mine include weeping quietly over books, wine, and wondering who turned the damn heat off in the middle of a Canadian March. Hobbies are importantly in both bringing down and fleshing out your character. So our superhero’s hobbies will include video games (where he plays a version of himself), writing bad poetry, and trying to figure out the perfect butter chicken recipe. Remember though, he can’t be good at everything, so we’ll also…

GIVE HIM SOME REAL EMOTIONS. Everyone gets sad now and again. Make him sad. Everyone gets silly now and then. Make him crack a joke. Perhaps he has a favourite one involving the pope, a bar, and a testy crocodile that he tells over, and over, and over again. Perhaps he’s sorting through his feelings or has a bit of anger problem. He doesn’t always respond appropriately, and sometimes he has a tendency to be overly dramatic and monologue to villains. Emotion is a force all itself, and almost nobody has full control over them.

Phew, doesn’t our character seem a little more human now, a little more interesting and identifiable while still being a bit of a total dreamboat? That’s because we tried to humanize him. These are just a few short things you can do, but they all have to do with the one thing you absolutely HAVE to remember when humanizing your character….

          5. JUST KEEP IT REAL BRO. People are complex and messy masses of bone and tissues and spirit. Write real people, because real people are easy to identify. I’ve said it over, and over and over again, but that’s only because making an identifiable character is so important. Having your readers identify with your character, that’s what makes them really real. Your readers are the people that make your characters come alive over and over again. Characterization is so important, and there are a lot of things you have to keep in mind. People are deep, and your characters should be too. Complexity is key.

There are a million ways to humanize your characters, and I could go on and on and on, but the most important point is the last one. Your characters are human if they are real. People are real, so don’t forget to include everything that makes people real into your character. Yes, creating someone who’s interesting and deep and complex is hard work, but no one ever said writing was easy, and if they do, they’re clearly a witch and need to be dealt with accordingly.

(Don’t gotta listen to me though, I temporarily forgot how to use a kettle today, so yeah.)
