isn’t this is the first time the dream self and real self were treated as separate individuals? 

Is it because of Terezi’s mind/seer power? Or was it always like this from the start? this bothers me so much

The new upd8 was hella nice, but this slide in particular bothered me a lot when I stopped to think about it

Like, we always knew that people in doomed timelines went to the dreambubbles, right? But these ones are not doomed selves, these are versions of characters who didn’t die in that moment: that John is the one who ascended, those Rose and Roxy were the one who revived when their dreamself were kissed, and so on. 

This means that these people died even though an exact “clone” of them, of their personality and memories until that point, lived on somewhere else - the John that was stabbed on his questbed didn’t survive through ascension, he died and a copy of him went on.

This is some creepy The Prestige level shit, these people got robbed of their existence and their copies are not even aware of it

IM LOSING IT THEY BOTH BELIEVE THE OTHER ONE IS STRAIGHT

I’m trying to figure out why I like Davepetasprite so much.

Part of it is the juiced-up wish fulfillment of it all, which feels like a very deliberate gesture - DPS look like someone’s OC because they are a perfected being, the Very Thing You Want, as filtered through the native symbol language of MSPA.  Forget that Hope nonsense: this is what an angel looks like in comic sans.

It’s also the end of Dave’s arc, in the way that Jasprosesprite is the end of Rose’s.  The Strider/Lalonde problem is anhedonia.   A situation in which Dave is able to delight in himself - surely that’s the major problem of his character solved, right?  And it couldn’t happen to the “real” Dave, because that kind of solution doesn’t happen to real people.  You don’t wake up one day and decide that you love yourself.  Magic is required.

So the squared sprites are projections of what Dave and Rose wanted to be, really.  Ultraconfident sexually aggressive tentacle cat princess and empathetic androgynous never-alone mindmeld hyperfurry?  Are you kidding me?  Sign my terrified middle-school self up.  If this were really a video game and these kids genuinely gained all the levels, these are what the results would be: the highest selves of 13-year-old trauma victims.  Not god tiers, but gods. And, as gods, they are peripheral - they have to be, right?  The mortals are over there weeping and hugging and smothering themselves with pillows, but the trade-off is they get to have the real relationships and learn the real lessons and live the real lives. Original Dave and Original Rose get to live without pain.

There are always these gears turning in Homestuck under all the bullshit, and that’s what I’m here for.  The Bad Man has this insane propensity for getting me to feel genuine feelings about the impossible and the impossibly stupid.

Like I think this is so subtle but really important–all Dave’s life he’s had this high bar set by Bro on what it means to be cool, and it amounted to distance and aloofness and unemotionality. So much of Dave’s esteem and confidence is tied into this notion of coolness 

And Dirk, the alt kid version of his Bro, so easily and casually is just like, “yeah, that type of “cool” is basically meaningless. I can talk to you and relate to you, which is way better”….like it’s a small thing, but I think in terms of Dave letting go of the toxic attitudes of Bro and relating to Dirk in a healthy and individual way, that small gesture is a really important sign of respect and sincerity to Dave’s emotions and personality that Bro never extended

It just hit me that in pretty much every single shitty pixel update, Dave was the one going somewhere else on the building top to get away from Dirk because he reminded him of Bro and he really didn’t want to talk to him

and Dirk was the one following Dave around the building because Dave reminded him of his idol and he really wanted to get to know him

Before i’d just been interpreting them as equally uncomfortable because they were both facing someone who was like their role models but different, but that’s not it at all, is it? They were having completely different reactions for the past two weeks.

okay so i’m super duper into this upd8??? like it was sad but i think it was incredibly important to dave and dirk’s development and gave us a really good look at how these boys work, and heres some of the main points. warning for major spoilers i guess??

hussie directly addressing bro’s abuse towards dave

dave explaining and showing how bro’s abuse affects him now (ie how dave doesn’t like to fight or be in danger, how he feels about heroism, and how he apologized for initiating physical contact with dirk)

how much dave is seriously NOT over bro at all, and how much living in that household for 13 years affected him

how even if lil cal was to blame for bro’s behavior, it was still shitty and inexcusable regardless of the amount of influence on bro

dave talking about how the other beta kids never really understood how bad it was for dave, and how dave wished he would’ve had someone who actually cared for him

dirk knowing that he was toxic and shitty towards jake, and understanding that he seriously needs to step off and leave jake alone now (”It’s not any one thing. I think I was just a completely toxic element in his life from day one. “

Quick refresher on Dave’s living conditions

Some of the puppets in his house were filled with blood

There were a bunch of webcams around the house constantly filming the puppets

His sink was full of fireworks and there were shurikens and swords and shit everywhere

His goddamn fridge only had swords in it like what the fuck
