You know, I've never really thought about Mother Goose poems in years (outside of references to such), but I'd be baffled and bewildered if someone told me they'd never heard Jack & Jill, or Little Miss Muffet, or Hey Diddle Diddle.

And now that I put this into words, it sounds silly. Of course there's people who haven't heard those rhymes, at minimum anyone who didn't speak English as a child. Now I want to know if other languages/cultures have something similar. Those silly childhood tales that hardly ever get thought of, but almost everyone has heard at least once when they were little.

The real question is:

Who gets custody of their children, Aqua and Turquoise?

Actually, I want to see this, but with a toddler or elementary school-aged demon trying its damnedest (pun intended) to act like a real, grown-up Corruptor of Souls, just like Mommy! Bonus points if at least one summoner is genuinely fooled.

Sometimes I like to think of myself as "Female Lite" or "Diet Female" because while I do identify as a cis woman, it just doesn't really feel important. As if my gender was more diluted than usual. Just enough gender that I can tell there's femaleness in there, but my gender is to femininity as LaCroix is to fruit juice.

The 2023 Gender Census is now open!

The 10th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 9th May 2023.

It’s short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - it’s what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.

An interesting internet culture thing I’ve never seen discussed is the “shared unstated”, where someone will say an incomplete sentence leaving out the most crucial information and yet it conveys an idea or emotion that everyone just. Gets.

An example of this is when people are reacting emotionally to something and they just say “I’M” and then leave off any verbs or anything else in general. We started out with “IM SCREAMING” or “IM DYING” and then evolved just into “I’M” which holds almost no information and yet, we get it.

Another example is the recent “one of the most of all time” phrase. The first time I saw it was about a very strange looking little creature, like maybe one of those rodents with the elongated snout, and one of the comments was “one of the most animals of all time.” The crucial adjective is missing but the Vibe is present. Is it one of the most beautiful animals, the best animals, the coolest animals, the weirdest animals? Certainly not. And we all know it’s not. But it definitely is one of the most animals, which is a separate thing. Idk. It just is. We just get it. It’s the shared unstated.
