So do you have any name ideas for Penelope and Carmelita's parents?

Carmelita? No.

I do have a name for Penelope’s father, but I’m not ready to reveal it yet.

Me: Writing up Episode 0 is too hard!

Also me: I think I'll try to work on Episode 6 tonight...

That Penelope/Le Paradox boss fight is just too tempting not to start up...

I say that, and yet the only thing I've got is... "She made the first move."

The hardest part of that scene isn't how the fight plays out, but rather the dialogue between our heroine and villain.

Are Penelope's parents still alive and if so, do they approve of Bentley?

Her parents have not met him yet.

I've found quite a few Thieves In Time rewrites over the years. I can't help but imagine how some of them would play out if my premise (Penelope joining the adventure against her will) were introduced...

This is on top of all the other "What if?" scenarios I came up with on my own...

I thought I'd skip ahead and work on Episode 2 for a bit (specifically Jail Break), but I've got a question for you, readers.

Is there an official name for the prison at Cotton Mouth Bluff? The one where Tennessee (and later, the boys) gets locked up in? If not, I'd love to hear name suggestions.

If you must know, the mission Jail Break contains a bit of a deviation from canon (aside from Penelope now being on the rescue team). The boys are being held in jail separately. Our three heroes (Penelope, Tennessee, and Carmelita) are going to split up to save them. Penelope's going to free Bentley, Carmelita's going after Sly, and Tennessee's stuck with Murray.

I'm thinking about how they're all going to pull this off, starting with Penelope freeing Bentley. The only catch with Penelope's part is I don't want her just using RC vehicles. She's going to actually fight guards. She'll start by picking a guard's pocket to get the key to Bentley's cell, then... she'll clean house.

Why is she doing it this way? She's trying to show Bentley she's not a helpless damsel. Spoiler alert: It works.

So, since Murray calls Penelope "Sis", Does that technically make her and Jing sisters?

I'm not planning on shipping Murray and Jing.

It's not off the table... I just haven't planned anything for them yet.

so seeing how Sly doesn't get stuck in Egypt, how does it end?

Well, of course our four heroes end up staying together. Beyond that, I'm not sure where to take them.

Sly and Carmelita? Sly has given up on a future with her. Does Carmelita want to make up with him? Maybe.

Bentley and Penelope? They're engaged. A very well deserved reward after she took down Le Paradox and led everyone to victory on his blimp. She's been forgiven, though she is having trouble with forgiving herself.

Do you have any Ideas for Murray's character development?

As I already said in multiple posts, Murray won’t have much of an arc to go through. He’s more focused on being a good older brother towards Penelope, or “Sis” as he always calls her.

Hey there. Just found your TiT rewrite. Love what I’ve seen. One question tho. Everyone has like idle animations in The safehouse in all the games but what would Penelopes be? And would they change possibly depending on how far in the she gets

I can see her reacting with surprise when the player selects her. But right before OP: Jurassic Thievery (Episode 3) and onwards, she'll be ready for action.

Perhaps she'll become more alert and comfortable as the game progresses, though I'm not sure exactly how to word out everything she does.

I think I'll also have Bentley react with panic if the player selects her when she doesn't have a mission assigned during Episodes 1 and 2. He stops doing that after the events of Episode 2's Jail Break.

As for her field animations... I'll think of something eventually. Yes, I do have a weapon setup ready for her.

Thieves In Time Redux: Rewriting the tutorial

You guys likely already know how Thieves In Time Redux begins. Penelope gets dragged into the events of the game against her will. Let's go over how she does during the story's opening...

We open near the museum, same as in canon. The only difference? There's four figures instead of three. The opening exchange now includes Penelope.

I'll just go ahead and show you the entire thing...

"Okay, you three remember the plan, right?"

"Of course! My mind is like a steel cap!"

"Uh, that's 'trap', Big Guy. And everybody relax! We've been over it a million times. What could possibly go wrong?''

"Famous last words! Look, we're only going to get one shot at this, so we can't mess up!"

"Alright, no messing up allowed. Now stop worrying! This is gonna be a piece of cake!"

"Question. Is it too late for me to back out?"

"I'm afraid so. You're coming with me, remember?"

"...Fine."

"We won't be out here forever, Sis! All we gotta do is take that dagger, do our thing, and clobber some fools into next week!"

"...Right. I'll keep that in mind."

"And with that, I'll see you all inside. Now let's get going!"

Penelope will be joining Bentley in the sewers. Before the opening, she had been targeted by kidnappers. She told Bentley about them in a panic, and... that's why she's here. She doesn't get enough time to vanish without a trace. Oh, and her blueprints for Le Paradox's blimp went missing.

Spoiler alert: They were stolen.

Sly's section is identical to canon, save for a few new lines. Same deal for Murray.

Bentley's section is changed up to accommodate Penelope. She'll only be following him for now... at least until her segment begins.

Just like in canon, Bentley falls deeper in the sewers... and gets separated from Penelope.

"How's that security system coming, Bentley?"

" Uh... Great! Perfect! I'll be done in a jiffy! *moves forward, only to realize he didn't land where he was supposed to* H--how did I...?"

"I thought you said 'no messing up allowed', old friend."

"I'm... taking the scenic route tonight!"

"Uh-huh... *short pause* You haven't forgotten Penelope, have you? Aren't you supposed to be watching her?"

This leads to a tutorial section for our favorite mouse girl. Her objective is finding Bentley. She's also given a title: The Wild Card.

"Sorry, I'm a little nervous. Nearly losing you to kidnappers does that."

"'A little', you say? You've been a nervous wreck ever since we left HQ."

Since this happens to be Penelope's very first solo outing, poor Bentley is freaking out. Penelope, meanwhile, isn't nearly as uneasy. She's just annoyed that she's been dragged into this adventure against her will. Not that she can tell Bentley why...

She instead tries to reassure him that yes, she can take care of herself... only to immediately follow that up by trying to run off. Bentley, of course, thinks she got lost and turns her around. She plays along and evades suspicion.

Since running off is no longer an option, Penelope goes off to find Bentley... When she does, he's in the process of almost getting jumped by a guard. She responds by knocking said guard out... because nobody touches that turtle except her.

Now reunited, they move onward to the same control room from canon.

Everything after that is nearly identical to vanilla. Yes, even Murray's segment. And yes, even Carmelita catching Sly in the act of thieving around.

The only difference is Penelope now being in the van with the boys as they all drive into a time portal.

Not a bad intro, huh? I've already talked about everyone's character arcs in previous posts, so here's a quick recap...

Sly learns that maybe ditching his friends on Kaine Island wasn't the best idea.

Bentley learns that he needs to not be overprotective of Penelope, but rather supportive.

Murray... doesn't go through much of a arc. He's focused on being a good older brother towards Penelope.

And Penelope? She's got a lot to learn about friendship. I bet you can't wait to see how she goes from distant and not wanting to be here to willing to take responsibility for what she's done. Because yes, she is still responsible for the Le Paradox incident in this rewrite.

I won't be writing Penelope as a sociopath, but rather as someone disconnected from her friends and what she actually needs.

I kind of neglected to mention that since Penelope is still behind the events of this game, she's going to be a bit confused about how Le Paradox's evil plan has gone ahead without her.

Lastly, I want to address how long it's been since the end of Sly 3. It's been roughly 19 months since Sly started faking amnesia.

At the beginning of this rewrite, Sly and Bentley are 22, Murray is 23, Penelope is 21, and Carmelita is 25. No clue about Dimitri or the villains.

I can't provide many estimates on how much of Episode 0 (Chapters 1-6) I've got left to finish. I do, however, have most of the dialogue written. Though most of it comes straight from the vanilla game.

Most of the new dialogue, of course, has to do with Penelope now joining the boys for the adventure. And most of that dialogue comes from Chapters 3 (Bentley's segment) and 4 (Penelope's segment).

The main challenge, as you might guess, lies in writing up Chapter 4. Should be fun.

do you have any tips for writing in-character fanfiction?

Writing Notes: In-Character Fanfiction

Fan Fiction - a type of writing that responds to something else like a book, a TV show or a film.

People write fan fiction typically because they are big fans of their chosen story, and want to create more of it.

They might imagine what happened before or after the story's main events or imagine other scenes in the lives of their favourite characters.

Fan fiction is a great way to get started with writing, because a lot of the work has been done for you. Characters, settings and plots are already there to be customised, changed and adapted. The possibilities are endless.

Fan fiction usually falls into 2 big categories: in-universe and alternate universe (AU).

In-universe fan fiction takes place in the same general setting and plot line as the original story. It could be, for example, a prequel or a story that follows characters that aren’t focused on as much in the main plot.

Alternate universe fan fiction explores different settings or plot lines for characters within a fandom. This can be anything from a fanfic where a character who dies in the original story lives or an alternate setting where all of the characters work at a coffee shop. AU fanfics are great for if you want more control over your storyline or want to explore an entirely different setting with characters you already love.

Writing Tips for In-Character Fanfiction

Know the Canon. In fan fiction, the original story, characters and world you are responding to is called the canon.

Know the story you're responding to.

Read it a few times and make sure you have the detail straight.

Make your story make sense for the existing story world.

If the protagonist can't swim in the original story, don't start yours with them doing the front crawl across the British Channel unless you can explain when and where they learnt the skill (and how it's relevant).

If characters act out-of-character, or the world has changed in your version, make sure there's a good reason for it.

Consider the Past. You aren’t inventing new characters, and you can’t change the lives they’ve already lived unless you’re writing a prequel. So, you must be familiar with the lives your characters have already led and can work their lived experiences into your story. It can be helpful to ask someone who is also a fan of the series you’re pulling characters from to read your work before you publish, as they’ll be able to let you know whether you’re on the right track when it comes to sticking to the story’s canon.

Consider a New Approach. While it can be fun to dig into the lives of everyone’s favorite characters, fanfiction can take an exciting turn when the writer provides context for the behaviors of a not-so-beloved character. For example, describing a character’s difficult home life can help readers understand why they act in an undesired way in the original story. This doesn’t just help readers engage with the material you create – it can also help them to see their favorite stories and characters in a new way.

Ask "what if"? Fanfiction is, by its very nature, speculative, which means that every piece of fanfiction starts with this very simple question: What if?

What if this happened?

What if this didn’t happen?

What if this character and this character got together?

What if everything changed?

What if we knew what happened next?

Ask yourself “what if” questions about your chosen media, and follow the most interesting answer.

Once you’ve picked your favorite simple version of the question, start asking questions again.

Think about how the answer to that “what if” affects the rest of the story - do the characters change? Their relationships? The setting?

This will help you build out your plot more effectively.

Identify the Gap. Many fanfiction writers choose to focus on aspects of the story that were left unexplored in the original work. Look for gaps in the plot or characters of the story that you can use as a jumping-off point for your own story. Typically the concept for a fanfiction will be some gap you see in the source material’s story—or just something you’d have rather happened.

Revise, Revise, Revise. When you write an excellent fanfiction story, it can be tempting to publish it immediately, especially if you have an eager audience to read your work. However, taking the time to revise is critical. After you finish your work, take a day away, and then come back and reread it. Don’t just keep an eye out for spelling and grammar mistakes. You’ll also want to ensure that you don’t have plot holes, facts that go against canon, or characters acting in a way that won’t make sense to your readers.

Get a Beta Reader. Fan fiction writers often work with other fans called beta readers, who read their work before they post it online and edit it or suggest changes or improvements.

Reading your own work aloud to yourself or others is a good idea; alternatively, ask a friend to read it through for inconsistencies or points that need clarification.

Doing either (or both!) of these will help make your writing the best it can be before you post it on a fan site.

Out of Character: Make sure you keep true to the personalities of the cast. Even if something about the starring character is being changed, it should be changed accordingly. Also, even if the canon characters never do anything to contradict their personalities, if they never do anything distinctive to their personalities, that's generally a bad sign since it makes them seem too generic.

Interact with Your Readers. You’re going to get plenty of comments when you publish a fanfiction story that becomes popular. Interacting with your readers is key to keeping them coming back for more. Engage in conversation, ask them questions about what they’d like to see next, and remember – your readers are there because they love the characters just as much as you do.

"Original Flavour" - a Fanfic that attempts to emulate the tone, atmosphere and style of its inspiration as closely as possible.

The goal of the Original Flavour fic is to seem as though the original production team could have thought it up.

Even if it heads off into previously unknown and unexplored territory for that property, the story will emphasize the use of existing gimmicks and devices rather than introducing totally foreign ones.

If you are writing an Original Flavour fic, you (usually) don't introduce or kill core characters, revise continuity, or do anything that is non-canon beyond the events of your story.

To an extent, it is possible to pull these off and still maintain this trope, but only if it's in a way that the canon itself could have evolved (as opposed to anything drastic). Original Flavor is exactly like writing a spec script you could submit to the showrunner, but not necessarily in script form.

Examples for inspiration:

Alice Through the Needle's Eye is a Fan Sequel to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that perfectly mimics Carroll's style.

Peter Pan and the Only Children is a Fan Sequel to J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, that perfectly mimics Barrie's style.

Zootopia: A Tail of Two has been regarded as having the definite feel of the original Zootopia movie.

sometimes you need dialogue tags and don't want to use the same four

A colour wheel divided into sections with dialogue tags fitting the categories 'complains', 'agrees', 'cries', 'whines', 'shouts', and 'cheers'

I went ahead and made a tier list. This one's sorted by how much I can't wait to write each character's lines in my rewrite of Thieves In Time.

I Went Ahead And Made A Tier List. This One's Sorted By How Much I Can't Wait To Write Each Character's

I'm especially dreading The Grizz, though I can't wait to write up his boss fight.

Heck, I could say the same thing about all five bosses. Still don't know what to do with Miss Decibel...

Sir Raleigh (the new Black Knight), Robo-Penelope, and Le Paradox? They're going to be the most fun...

I haven't pinned down Le Paradox's exact wording yet, but he's going to have quite the conversation with a certain mouse during his boss fight...

As for the ancestors... Not looking forward to Rioichi, Bob, or Salim. Tennessee and Sir Galleth? Slightly more so.

No, I am not writing any lines for Dimitri.

Lastly, there's our main protagonists: Sly, Bentley, Murray, Carmelita... and our lead, Penelope.

Of course, I'm easily going to have the most fun with Penelope... for fairly obvious reasons.

Honestly speaking, rewriting a story as janked up as Thieves In Time is anything but easy.

For those of you who have liked my little behind the scenes blog, thank you. I really hope I can do these characters justice, because Sanzaru sure didn't.

I'd actually been working on it for 10+ years, but 2024 was when I finally decided to turn that story into a full length fanfiction.

Thieves In Time Redux: Full Story Preview

I thought I'd repost one of my full story previews from DeviantArt. A few months back, I posted this there. It's set during Episode 0, during Sly's portion of the tutorial in Chapter 2. We open just after Sly's little accident crossing over to the museum building...

It wasn't too long before Sly happened upon a small rat guard with a gas mask. Somehow he looked familiar upon a close inspection… Sly brushed it off and picked his pocket before taking him out. "Nah… It couldn't be." Just a coincidence, right? He didn't dare tell Bentley. What would he think?

Almost immediately afterwards, Sly started hearing voices coming from inside the museum. He could hardly make out what they were saying, but he did see shadows in the window. Among the figures he spotted was a strangely familiar… skunk? He didn't bother staying long enough to hear what they were talking about. There was a job that still needed completing.

Sly almost swore he could have heard a squeak coming from Bentley's end of the line, followed by a splash. "Something happen in there, you two?"

This time, it was Penelope, the mouse, talking. "No need to worry about us, Sly. We're fine! Just a literal rat!"

A smile escaped from Sly, followed by a small chuckle… "First-timers are the best, aren't they?" He pressed onward, happy to have someone other than just Bentley and Murray on the main roster for a change. He fondly remembered Bentley and Murray's first time way back in Cairo… Those two had come so far since those humble beginnings…

But whenever he recalled that memory, he couldn't help but remember Neyla, the traitorous Interpol officer/Klaww Gang member… Things were different now. She was purged from this world. Surely he'd never meet anyone like her again, right?

As it happened, Penelope had never been on a full scale adventure like this before. Not from the very beginning, at least. Her experience level easily dwarfed everyone else's. Not that it was her fault. Sly had the gall to retire before she could gain any real experience as a full time member.

He started to regret that decision as he kept going… How could he do that to someone he recently hired? Still, Sly looked forward to seeing what Penelope could do beyond what she had initially been hired for. Better later than never, he thought.

There was no reason to make Penelope a villain in Thieves in Time. While she was never one of my TOP favorite characters in the series, I liked her addition in Sly 3 and what her skillset could offer to the gang. Plus, it was sick how she took on LeFwee and smacked him around.

Surely there was a better way to bring Penelope back. I don't know what that way is, exactly, but I believe there had to be one.

Thieves In Time Redux: Why Toad Town?

Check this post out for context.

You may be wondering why there's so much music from Paper Mario: The Origami King associated with this project. This was actually a decision I made quite recently.

For now, I'm only talking about Origami King's Toad Town.

I started work on Thieves In Time Redux long before Origami King ever existed. It was just a massive stroke of luck to see OK's Toad Town of all pieces work so well together with the progression of my little story. Or more specifically, a certain mouse girl's evolution into the true hero I know she can become.

Take Toad Town Ghost Town, for instance. It's assigned to Episode 1, the beginning of our heroes' time traveling adventure. Not only is it perfect for Feudal Japan, it's also perfect for the beginning of Penelope's character arc.

Might as well talk about each step in the music's progression. Toad Town - Red Streamer Removal is assigned to Episode 2. Perfect for a wild west town, is it not? Here, Penelope is beginning to understand the consequences of her actions, mainly through what happened to Sly and Carmelita.

My favorite, though, is Toad Town - Blue Streamer Removal. Assigned to Episode 3, that's when Penelope undergoes her change of heart. It happens after she gets placed on bed rest and needs the boys to take care of her.

Then there's the more heroic shift in tone that comes with Toad Town - Yellow Streamer Removal. In which our heroine successfully strikes down her own creations without being discovered as their creator.

Episode 5 gives us Toad Town - Purple Streamer Removal. Penelope's nearing the end of her character arc, and the boys are proud of her. Too bad Le Paradox outs her as his mole at the end of the episode.

Toad Town - Green Streamer Removal gives us the end of her character arc with Episode 6. After her journey across time, Penelope has changed for the better, she's been found out, and she's willing to take responsibility for what she's done.

How in the heck did freaking Toad Town manage to retell my entire fanfic so perfectly? Even I have no clue... But I'm so glad it turned out that way.

Long story short, I love how the music progresses to its final form.

Thievius Raccoonus Rebound - A Sly Cooper fan-zine.

YES, it's finally here! I could rattle about it's development but I did most of that in the foreword. Though I forgot to mention two details. - We included 'Original Ancestors. Don't worry there's only two of them and are an excellent and creative supplement to the Cooper bloodline in my honest opinion. They're written and illustrated in the style this zine was inspired by (the ancestral book) and we hope you enjoy them. - We also included 'Honourable Mentions' after Conner's page. I could've made a whole page just, announcing them but couldn't think of much to fill it in with SO, honourable mentions are canon characters who, in some way, shape or form assisted the Cooper family in the past. - These pages have transcripts! They're in the image description. That's all! We hope you enjoy and sharing would be appreciated! Thank you!

Thievius Raccoonus Rebound - A Sly Cooper Fan-zine.
First of all, Thanks!

This project was supposed to take two months but ended up taking a
whopping four months. Some ancestors were more difficult to research
than we thought, folks had jobs and exams to tend to and to top it all off,
my laptop of five years conked on me on the day I planned
to publish this zine!

So, thank you for your patience and thanks to the team for sticking with it!

I'd also like to stress that this is a FAN-ZINE, not an actual recreation of the
Thievius Raccoonus.

While that would be a neat project, it would take a bigger team and even more
time which right now, feels a little TOO ambitious but who knows!
I'd like to thank the Sly Cooper community for sharing this project around as
much as you have and supporting ThiefNet as a whole. After all you guys are
make things like these happen and I'd like to host more fun little projects
with a low entry level in the future.

If you're unfamiliar with the concept, a fan-zine can vary in content or theme
but generally, they're collections of fanmade content, often artwork.
TRR was inspired both by the family book and the way game manuals (like Sly 1's)
had little 'case files' or beastiary pages etc on characters, NPCs, and bosses.
The text on these pages is as close to canon information we could find but
at times it'll be supplemented by expanding on something related to the
character or an educated assumption based on things such as time period.
We only did this when there wasn't much info on a particular ancestor.
If we got something wrong or you think we didn't stick to canon enough,
PLEASE, DO NOT HARASS THE TEAM.

While comments are appreciated, it is no time or space to correct us.
If you'd like to help us stick to canon in future projects, the ThiefNet Discord
has a special catalog for all the games, comics, game assets and lore where
you can post and perhaps even debate with other lore enthusiasts alike!

With that being said, I hope you enjoy.

- Umbra, admin of ThiefNet.
The very first Cooper in documented history, Slythunkhamen is the first of the Cooper Clan and the first pharaoh in his generation. From his early days he learned quickly that the shadows were his most suitable place for thievery. Whether it was early mornings in the desert or the late brisk nights of the markets, Slythunkhamen would come home with a basket filled with fresh produce, grain and other resources to sustain himself. Hiding in the shadows and behind vases was good while lasted but soon he would learn a useful technique that would be passed down to his son and future generations. One night, he was chased after by a guard. Slytunkhamen would in the shadows and as the guard came near, his physical form became transparent. The guard would walk right past him and never take notice. Thus, the skill of invisibility was created. This skill would allow any Cooper to become invisible, so long as they stay still. Any movement will disrupt the ability and reveal yourself. This skill would be the first of many powers in the Cooper Clan.

Years have passed and Slytunkhamen has become a father. He had many duties on his plate but his thieving days never slowed down. While his family was safe and asleep at home, Slytunkhamen would go out for a late night heist. Gathering a good harvest, he was well on his way home. He successfully evaded many guards that night but a strange winged creature was following him. The silhouette was haunting and the pharaoh assumed it was some sort of spirit who escaped from the realm of the dead. After taking cover behind a building, the pharaoh's breathe stood still as he vanished. The winged shadow beast would leave and Slytunkhamen could finally catch his breath. Who knows if their paths would ever cross again?
The descendant of Slytunkhamen, and the founder of the Cooper Vault. Like his father, Slytunkhamen II was a master thief in Egypt, and the first descendant in what would be a long line of master thieves. He started his fortune by being employed by the great Pharaohs, stealing from the corrupt to begin piling his massive fortune. He would often utilize his father’s “invisibility” technique to make most of his heists successful. His canes he used were two sickles, perfect for navigating and climbing his way around Egypt. His exploits were so legendary, no one would have ever known of him if not for the Thievius Raccoonus.
An ancestor from circa 940 Arabia, Salim al-Kupar is said to have the stealth of 40 thieves. However it is debated if this is meant to be taken literally or figuratively as some sources claim he lead the infamous 40 Thieves gang as well. If this is the case, Salim would have held the record for the largest active thief gang to date or at least share the title with Henriette 'One-eye' Cooper as the exact number of crew members on her ship is unknown and often fluctuated. In fact it's common for exact numbers to fluctuate and thus sources would remain vague as the only source would be Salim himself.

Salim was an accomplished climber who invented a technique known as 'The Climbing Cobra' that allowed him to ascend and descend quickly while climbing vertically. In his lifetime him and his fellow thieves were so accomplished at their work that he managed to retire around the age of 40. This would make Salim one of the few whose records don't end abruptly due to sudden death by Clockwork's claws.
Sir Galleth Cooper was a knight from Medieval England, having lived around circa. 1300. In his hands the family cane resembled a lance and he was one of the few ancestors to carry a secondary weapon, in his case a one-handed steel sword. His shield bears the Cooper family emblem though it can also be seen on his armor at times. Rather than a gang of thieves, Galleth ran with an order of knights who did not serve any king but rather stole from corrupt nobility. His signature move called 'The Catapult Crash' allowed him to break through barriers while using his lance to launch himself while hanging from a wall and his sword to break anything in his path. His own writings made him appear like a brave and capable knight, though other sources claim that boasting may have been one of his many talents.
An ancestor from 15th century Scotland, not much is known about Slaigh's life. How he got this tall is unknown but just like a member of the Cooper family, he adapted and favored strength of stealth. It is said he did try to remain in the shadows as much as possible however, by hugging any walls and dark corners he could find. Though, it is likely most smaller guards would rather avoid fighting with Slaigh as he was said to be so strong he could break open a safe with a single blow of this case. Said cane resembles a club more than a cane due to it's size and the materials used to make it.

Unfortunately, as stated earlier not much is known about Slaigh. He did not seem to be the type to write down his exploits as there was a lot of unrest during the 15th century which proved rich with opportunity to steal from the elite. We don't know how he passed away either, it could have been Clockwork but it could've just as easily been the Black Plague as it decreased the Scottish population to half a million by the beginning of the 16th century.
Rioichi Cooper, Sly’s Japanese ancestor, was born in the 1560’s during feudal Japan. Not much is known about this sneaky ancestor other than his development of the “Ninja Spire Jump” technique he used to move around the castles of Japan, staying out of sight from prying eyes. His silent movement and swift hands made short work of many a shogun’s wallet. There was nothing out of reach for him and his twin canes. Legend would have it he would not steal from just anyone, but only from those who stole from the innocent. There are rumor that Riochi would say there was no honor in stealing from anyone except master thieves themselves. It was with this mindset that Rioichi Cooper would become Japan’s greatest thief and the creator of the Code of Honor the Cooper family adheres to... mostly.

The ninja spire jump is performed by focusing one's energy, and placing it all on the point of landing. A true thief can see an aura surrounding their options, and execute landing effortlessly on any point. This includes anything from spires, antennas, even blades. Rioichi would further develop this technique throughout his life and turn it into the Leaping Dragon, where once could launch themselves from a spire, instead of merely jumping, covering greater distances.
Henriette 'One-Eyed' Coper was Sly's Pirate Ancestor. She sailed the Caribbean in the 1600's and made her fortune as a pirate does. Captain of the motley crew, she would sail and pillage off of big name pirates to earn 'a True Thief's Booty.' as she called it. Her ship, 'The Thievius' was the fastest on the seas and no amount of lawmen were able to out-maneuver her. Her homage to the Cooper legacy was in her cane which was more of a dagger. It had a small blade on one end and a miniature version of the signature hook on the other. No one would ever ask how she lost her eye unless you wanted to lose in a swearing contest. As untamed as she was on the seven seas, Henriette was a force to be reckoned with. One worthy of envy.

On a fateful day, Henriette was coming up from her cabin responding to some kind of commotion. Her crew had dropped like flies from the glare of a menacing pair of red, evil eyes among the fog. Clockwerk. Henriette looked up at her family nemesis and though dazed and confused, kept her wits about her enough to make an escape. She theorizes that her lack of one eye saved her life. Below is a surviving excerpt from her own journal.

" And see I did off the port bow, the frightening gaze of an eagle. My strong and seaworthy crew, transfixed in it's terrible faze, lay motionless and silent. All but myself fell victim to it's heart-stopping stare. Perhaps my eye patch protected me during the ordeal and I alone manned the ship away from the flying beast.

I fear it may strike again."
Agatha Cooper, circa 1690, was known for dabbling in the art of witchcraft in colonial America. Shunned by her peers for this, she took residence in a cottage in the woods, forming a coven of witches she'd 'stolen' that would soon become her gang of thieves. Amongst the coven was Mary Gale, a young deer who would become Agatha's most trusted partner and means of escape, with old rumors claiming the duo were seen silhouetted against a full moon though there is no real evidence of this happening.

Agatha only had one rule when it came to stealing and it was 'Bring No Harm'. making her one of the few Cooper ancestors who was considered a pacifist, as her boline was primarily used to cut drawstrings off coin purses and herbs for medicine. This did come with the risk of injuries in an unprepared fight, so she and Mary decided to look into another form of magic: Lucky charms. Agatha and her coven first used silver horseshoes, mostly worn on the bands of their hats which kept them protected from a singular major injury before they switched to golden horseshoes, some continuing to wear them on their hats or around their necks which kept them protected from a few extra hats.

Medieval script text:
"To leapeth high in the air, cast the X charm.
To fend thyself from harmeth, cast the square charm.
To perform near a Stealth Aura, jumpeth and cast the circle charm.
To perform a special charm, cast the triangle charm."
A legendary outlaw from circa 1860, Tennessee was most known for perhaps the most daring heists in the entire Cooper family history. He specialized in bank and train robberies, though that might mean he has broken the family code of honor as said banks would hold the accounts of innocent civilians. Rather than just the cane, Tennessee turned to gunslinging and obtained a custom made handle in the shape of the family cane for his revolver. If his reflexes and his aim can't get him out of a situation, his special Rail Slide technique will. Though the name is rather straight forward, the skill needed to execute the technique is not as it requires a well trained sense of balance and forward motion. This technique was most useful in the Old West due to railway transportation being a constantly expanding and developing technological field. Due to how few records were kept on his activities besides his legendary heists not much is known about the Outlaw. Even the Cooper Vault does not feature a painting but rather a wanted poster with a bounty of $5000 dollars. In today's economy, that would equal to $189,636.14 dollars.
Thaddeus Windslow Cooper III, has there ever been more of a gentleman? Born in the 1800's in England Thaddeus grew up in high society. He received the best education in London, performing well in all metrics and the ones he didn't he had a certain 'charm' with the teachers to change their minds. Once he became of age he inherited the Thievius Raccoonus and began his time as a master thief. Being in the heart of London there was no shortage of crime happening so there was no better place for a thief like him. Thaddeus would attend balls, charming the guests and making off with their fortunes as well as targeting rich families directly, leaving their vaults empty come daybreak. He would end up retiring a wealthy man.

Thaddeus Windslow Cooper III was a mind before his time. One of his key achievements was designing a flying machine, which is about 100 years before the world would come to know what an Aeroplane even is. Despite his career as a master thief he sought to maintain his high society lifestyle and so he wore a persona of being a kind, brilliant and generous head of House Cooper. His wit and intelligence was so well known that Scotland Yard even worked with him to help stop the long string of theft that kept happening throughout London. With Thaddeus playing both sides, information was easy to gather and with his fondness for disguises he could play many roles. There was no house more wealthy, no house more generous than House Cooper.

He would attend social events hosted by the family or business he was casing, spending time talking with the figureheads about their business, history and goals, offering hefty 'investments' on occasion to earn their trust. Once considered a part of the inner circle, being invited for tea was like inviting a ravenous lion into a meatlocker. He would take nothing for months only to strike the one night the family would not be home, leaving the home stripped of anything valuable.
Otto Van Cooper stands out among the Cooper ancestors due to his speciality not being stealth, strength or agility but rather intelligence. Having lived during the 1900s, an era full of technological innovation, Otto made up for what he lacked with technological know-how. There is no evidence that suggests he ever used a cane of some kind at all, but rather the rotary blades of his biplane were bent in the iconic hook shape. Said plane was equipped with an impressive amount of gadgets and features Otto would use to pull off his heists and his inventions would later be used by the Cooper gang's own van. His succesful lifetime is a testament to the adaptability of the Cooper bloodline, to overcome set-backs and defy the odds. The sky is no longer the limit.
Francine Cooper is a lesser known ancestor, active mostly during the 1920's and was not known to go beyond US borders. Although she was active across the entire US she was mostly active in New York and Chicago respectively. With her career as an actress she learnt how to navigate the world with the art of smooth talking rather than physical combat of some kind which makes her stand out among the other Coopers. It is not known if her talent at being 'persuasive' is something anyone could master with a little practice or if it was unique to her as a member of the Cooper bloodline. Francine's most notable heist involved the theft of a high profile Mob family's stash inside their vault. She used her notoriety as an actress to land a gig at the wedding reception of the Mob boss's daughter. At the event, she provided a distraction as her gang robbed the Don blind of all the family heirlooms they could find. The Gang wouldn't have been found out either if it wasn't for Francine's eye for diamonds. She took her chance to lay claim on the fine jewel owned by the bride with some well placed compliments and slight of hand. They were able to high tail it out with only a few new bullet holes in their getaway car and a mighty large hit on their heads.

Bentley is the brains of the Cooper Gang. He's a self-taught hacker and technical jack of all trades. He knows his way around explosives and remote control vehicles Bentley is also responsible for the vast majority of the planning that goes into the gang's heists. As an orphan himself he met Sly and Murray at Happy Camper Orphanage. The trio grew up like brothers, coming together for their first heist to steal a jar of cookies. And thus the Cooper Gang was born. While initially staying within the safety of the van, he eventually came out of his shell, joining Sly in the field. During their final confrontation with Clock-la Bentley suffered an injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. While losing his ability to walk was difficult to come to terms with, he was more upset about his friend blaming himself. Bentley would go on to develop a high-tech wheelchair to get him around in the field. With everything going on Bentley became introspective, questioning his abilities and place in the gang. After meeting Penelope, the love of his life, he gained a new found confidence. Though his current where-abouts are unknown, he's allegedly working on a Time Machine.
While many people consider him 'the muscle' or 'the brawn' of the gang, Murray himself (and his friends) would describe him as the heart. Both in a physical sense as he protects his loved ones from harm with force if needed, but also emotionally as an honest and reliable companion. Though his origins are an enigma, he wound up in Happy Camper Orphanage around the same time as his two best friends, Sly and Bentley. The three of them grew up to be inseparable, like family. Murray wasn't always known for his skills as a fighter, in fact in his early days out in the field he would much rather avoid combat an relied on Sly to cover him. Their success together as a team would give Murray the courage to not only go on more daunting missions, he now had the courage to do them on his own. (Though his friends would never be far away, thanks Bentley's binocucoms)

While Murray's passion to protect those he cares about got the gang out of quite a few scrapes, his worst nightmare would become a reality during the gang's confrontation with Clock-la. Losing the van already did a number on him but it would be the injury Bentley sustained that would break the hippo's heart of gold. Murray would go on to blame himself for not being able to prevent this and took some time off from his life as a member of the Cooper Gang. He'd travel the world, wandering all the way to Australia where he met the Guru. As a student of Dreamtime, Murray had returned to a more pacifist way of life.

After being sent on a spirit quest to Italy, he would run into his two best friends once more. Their time apart allowed them all to process things in their own way but it would be Bentley that convinced him it's time to let go of his feelings of guilt and rejoin the gang. A favor Murray would pay back in full not just by rejoining the group and helping in convincing the Guru to join too, but by reminding Bentley of their bond as brothers on Kaine Island. After Sly's retirement, Murray completed his training with the Guru and followed his other passion in life, racing. According to the ranks, Murray may give a lot of people a run for their money.
Graduating at the top of her class from Sleath Academy, Carmelita Montoya Fox joined Interpol's investigative services shortly after. It didn't take long for her to run into Sly, who was at the time stealing a personnel file on himself. Through her many encounters with Sly Cooper and his gang she managed to bag the most notorious and dastardly villains around the world. The Fiendish Five and the Klaww Gang all fell under he boot but she was never able to get the Cooper gang. Each encounter after the last though, there was something about Sly she found charming. The two of them, despite being opposites, did have an attraction for each other. Carmelita even went out of her way to save Sly not once, but twice during the heist of the Cooper family vault. During Sly's confrontation with Dr M, Sly got injured and suffered from amnesia. Instead of arresting him then and there she decided to take him under her wing, to see if they could work things out.
An aboriginal shaman koala from Yuendumu, Australia. The Guru first encountered the Cooper gang through Murray who become his student during his break to heal from some trauma and find himself again. His kind and pacifist nature made him a great teacher but lead a mining organization to take advantage of it and imprison him. They destroyed his home and disturbed an ancient, and powerful supernatural force he was protecting know as the Mask of Dark Earth. He promised the gang of thieves his assistance if they help him restore his home and deal with the mask. The Guru can do much more than give life advice as a master of Dreamtime. He's capable of controlling the minds of other creatures as well as seemingly changing shape though it's more likely he simply makes you believe you're looking at a rock. He's also shown to have a sense of humor, going along with the gang's pranks and disguises. Using his abilities he has gotten the gang out of many threatening situations, putting his own safety on the line. After the big heist on Kaine Island the Guru faded into obscurity once more but still taking on students. The Guru was last sighted meditating in a park in Central New York.
Penelope is an expert RC specialist, known for her work with planes. At a young age, she attempted to join the dog-fighting league, but due to being under the age restriction, she was denied entry. To bypass this, she took on the persona of the Black Baron, who then proceeded to win the league and became a celebrity. Penelope would find herself wearing the costume more and more, living a double life as a dogfighting champion and his personal mechanic, thus going on to create the ACES dogfighting competition in Kinderdijk, Holland.

Penelope was soon contacted by the Cooper Gang's Bentley, who offered her a chance at a heist to break into the Cooper Vault on Kaine Island, which she only accepted if they could prove themselves in the ACES competition against the Baron. After a battle of fisticuffs with Sly Cooper, Penelope's secret was finally revealed and she threw her disguise away to start anew, keeping her end of the deal.

Once the heist was finished, Penelope and Bentley would continue to work together as partners.
The Panda King is a Pyrotechnician with a specialty in fireworks that resides in the Kunlun Mountains in China. He's known by the Cooper Gang for his involvement with the Fiendish Five, their theft of the Thievius Raccoonus and murder of Sly's parents. He has a hot temper and channels both that and his skills with fireworks into his martial art form he calls "Flame-Fu". Nearing the end of his time with the Fiendish Five he was defeated by Sly Cooper and subsequently imprisoned. After his release he was reunited with his daughter, Jing King but his peace didn't last. His daughter was abducted by General Tsao and he was exiled from his home. He used this time to try and find inner peace as a monk. The Cooper Gang used this to their advantage to recruit his assistance in their heist of the Cooper Vault. With the Guru's charm and a success in Jing King free, he agreed to become their demolitions expert.

After this final job, the Panda King has retired and returned home to watch over his daughter. He's determined to keep her safe from any other suitors with bad intentions like General Tsao.
A self-made Marine Iguana who mastered the art of turning failure into success through petty anger and clever marketing. Learning English from old-school Hip Hop music videos and studying art in college made him into one of the most memorable people one could ever meet. Dimitri's eccentric nature has proven so intriguing it allowed him to manage three enterprises at a time. Failing as an artist he took revenge by forging classical paintings, proving a point that he's not only a good painter but the 'experts' were unable to tell that they were spending money on a fake. With his new income he financed his Nightclub to serve as a legit business he could cover his criminal activities with. Making a name for himself in a short amount of time he was invited to join the Klaww Gang as a Spice distributor. His fame and money ultimately went to his head, using the Clockwork tail feathers as printing plates for a money printing operation which was shut down after his inevitable run-in with Sly Cooper.

Being humbled by the thief, Dimitri re-evaluated his life.

After his arrest Dimitri eventually ran into the Master Thief by sheer chance and cut the raccoon a deal to help him find his friend in return for his freedom. They ran into each other a second time and yet again, struck a deal to help each other. This time Dimitri asked something much, much bigger from the gang. To steal back his family heirloom, his grandfather Reme Lousteau's scuba diving gear from a dangerous pirate island. In return for the effort, Dimitri simply joined the gang by his own choice without an invitation this time and used his natural diving skills for good. Even after his time with the Cooper gang he stuck to his new passion of diving and quickly regained his lost popularity. This time however, he remained somewhat humble and kept in touch with his new friends, sending post-cards to let them know that not only was he okay, he was more than okay.

He's still here, wishing you were fine, like him.
