One thing that tickled me about the Barbie movie was how Gloria's husband is (imo) a 'Real World' Ken.

We see very little of him in the movie. In both of his scenes, he's trying to speak/learn Spanish. He does nothing important or if consequence in terms of the plot... But he's trying to learn a language his wife and daughter speak. He's not excelling, I'm not even sure if he's succeeding. But he is kensistently trying.

For all of the 'Real World' men who are antagonists or opponents to Barbie, El Esposo de Gloria (as he is listed in the credits) has true Kenergy.

Barbie (2023) really had Barbie say “hey. I know the reason you hurt me is because I hurt you. I’m sorry I hurt you, because you didn’t deserve that. I know you are a better person than this, and you are fully capable of being that person. I can’t change the past, and I don’t think we can be in each other’s lives anymore without hurting each other, but i am sorry and I want you to be happy. I want you to find your identity and love yourself and live.” and then she realizes she’s also talking about herself.

she’s saying “I deserve to live. We both deserve to live.” it is one of the kindest things I have ever seen done to someone and to themselves in any piece of media ever

I’d Lose Interest If I Found Out It Wasn’t About Horses Too

Also, props to Allan???

He's a doll most people have never heard of. He got discontinued forever ago cause he was perceived as gay by consumers and they didn't like that.

But I love that he had an actual role in Barbie. He was very queer coded, yeah, but he didn't like when all the Kens turned to Patriarchy. He was so uncomfortable that he wanted to abandon Barbieland all together. He knew it was wrong.

And then he helped the Barbies get themselves back. He had a pink jumpsuit and sunglasses and went out all stealthy to get the Barbies in the van. He even voted at the end to keep the constitution the way it was.

Big Allan fan over here.

This Is So Sweet 🥹🥰

“It’s literally impossible to be a woman.

You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow, we're always doing it wrong?

You have to be thin, but not too thin, and you can never say you wanna be thin. You have to say you wanna be healthy, but also, you have to BE THIN.

You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass.

You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean.

You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas.

You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time.

You have to be a career woman, but also, always be looking out for other people.

You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is INSANE, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining!

You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood, but ALWAYS STAND OUT and ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL. But never forget that the system is rigged, so find a way to acknowledge that but ALSO, always be grateful!

You have to never get old. Never be rude. Never show off. Never be selfish. Never fall down. Never fail. Never show fear. Never get OUT OF LINE. It's too hard! It's too contradictory, and nobody gives you a medal or says 'thank you!' And it turns out, in fact, that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also, everything is your fault.

I'm just so tired of watching myself, and every single other woman tie herself into knots, so that people will like us.

And if all of that, is also true for a doll just representing a woman, then I don't even know." -Gloria the barbie movie

this is it. this is exactly it oh my god.

We're not appreciating the Weird Barbie enough. It's said in the movie that she helps everyone who need help while they always see her as someone who's not as good as them. She was friends with all dismissed Barbies and Kens, was there to offer support and safe shelter for everyone who needed it in Kendom, without her nothing in the movie would've been alright. When Stereotypical Barbie calls her "ugly and unwanted" she still helps her.

She was representing a woman in women's world who was pushed aside by other women because she didn't fit in but still had more wiseness and kindness than everyone who thought they're better than her.

thinking about the scene in barbie where she asks for permission to be herself and she's told she doesn't need permission, and no one can give her permission for that, because it's just something you start doing

thinking about the scene in barbie where they say you don't need to be exceptional to have worth and deserve love, because just getting through the day is often hard enough

also thinking about the scene in barbie where barbie tells a bunch of construction workers she doesn't have a vagina and the construction workers who have no context beyond her being a pretty girl are like "oh okay that's cool"

shout out to allan, the only real doll who knew how toxic everything was

If Mattel doesn’t actually make and sell the Depression Barbie™ they are missing out on a golden opportunity

what really got to me about the barbie movie is how the movie is really about how there is still a little girl inside all of us, and when you walk around the movie theater and see all these grown women dressed in pink and visibly excited, it's a reminder of that. but moreso, it's how your mother is a little girl too. and that all comes together in the end when barbie meets her creator. barbie was made so ruth's daughter could be anything she wanted to be, and she named her after her. in the end when ruth helps barbie become human, she is her mother. and when in the end barbie introduces herself as barbara, she is her daugher again. you can be anything, but being human and mortal and imperfect is the greatest gift of all.

Barbie Spoilers:

I woke up in the middle of the night with the realization that Barbie initially sets off on a mission to cheer up the 'girl' who was having the existential, 'weird', thoughts but at some point, she abandons the "cheering up" part of that mission. Barbie meets Gloria and her daughter, and she realizes that Gloria was the one who had those thoughts, but there's never a scene where she tries to get Gloria to change her attitude. Barbie sat in that park and she came to terms with her own emotions, and as the movie went on, she continued to experience the ups and downs of being human, of being a woman, and in doing so, she validated Gloria's feelings. Gloria didn't need to change, she didn't need to stop having these thoughts and emotions. She was completely valid having her own existential feelings and processing her feelings through Barbie, like so many people do.

Why is no one talking about how after watching the Barbie movie and stepping out of the cinema your eyes have to readjust to a world that is tragically devoid of pink

I loved it when the Barbie movie was like.. "this Barbie is having an existential crisis right now and she's supposed to look kinda ugly to reflect that, but we hired Margot Robbie so.. y'know, use your imagination"

My favorite part about seeing the Barbie movie is how much fun everyone had with it.

There was so much pink

Everywhere

People dressed up, the color coordinated. There was a pink balloon arch by the door and the concession stand had Barbie ballon’s. The employees wore pink shirts and sunglasses.

During the movie the audience was thoroughly engaged people laughed, a lot. Hearing everyone react to the little nods and jokes was so fun. The whole theater had a sense of community that isn’t very common anymore.

It was just fun

At my theater, I literally saw a group of 9 women all dressed like fairy princesses, and they sat behind me and they laughed and giggled the loudest and held hands and when the movie ended, they screamed and shouted and applauded.

And it was beautiful.

I felt like every adult woman in my theater was 10 years old again, bashing their Barbies together with their friends and wearing glitter on their cheeks.
