Took me a long time to realize, but the main reason Jayce's speech to Viktor didn't resonate with me, that it felt so hollow is because it's not the message I needed.
I don't know about other disabled people, or even specifically chronically ill folks... but for me, I haven't needed "you're beautiful/there's nothing wrong with you" regardless of how nice it would be to hear.
The message I feel is so sorely lacking from this media and things like it is "you're worth it." Viktor was suffering, in pain, dealing with the grief of death in so many ways. It wasn't about having something "wrong" with him; these things were objectively hurting him and it's normal/valid to feel negative about them. Specifically anger, which is so often suppressed because it's considered an unpalatable part of grief.
It takes a lot to care about someone with circumstances like that. You have to deal with the concepts of death, pain, uncertainty. You have to see your loved one suffer. They'll snap sometimes, behave emotionally, regardless of how much they control their feelings. Viktor pushed back a good bit, like in the bridge scene.
This. This is what got me into insects and other “bugs” as a small child. I was (and still am) an animal lover and they were the animals that were right there in my backyard and easy enough for a child to catch and play with. They are such cute little creatures 🪲🐜🦋🦗🐛
everyone should try to get into bugs because they fulfill all your primal needs to get Way Too Close to wildlife and hold and pet wild creatures
When you start recognizing bugs as friendly and cute little Guys, your world opens up so much.
They're easy to obtain. Do you want isopods? Just put a piece of cardboard on the ground and you will have isopods. There's a straight-up CLOUD of bees, wasps, butterflies, and flies around my Swamp Milkweed. Planting any native flower will make you so many friends. Better yet, do nothing—any somewhat overgrown area is habitat. I was hacking down some of the grasses in the Weed Area in our back yard yesterday (the non-native chicory is overpopulated and the native perennials are getting swallowed up by a Crap Ton of non-native grass) and found a enormous katydid.
I am feeling such awe and wonder over how tame and unbothered insects are in front of humans. Lots of them you can catch and hold in your hands and they will just be like oop oh well this is strange sorry to bother you and fly away.
They are so beautiful too! The COLORS. Electric blue! Iridescent green! Bright red! Every metallic shade! Rainbow! Our yard is full of dragonflies now and they've got to be one of the world's most elegant creatures.
I made a little animation

This is a Zentangle-inspired fish Jacob drew (traditional art, in pen).
If you want us to post more art like this, vote for Oakie here and reply, message us, or like the post linked here to let us know!
Hi everyone, we’re doing this again! The not-on-this-hellsite mascot poll is happening, and we’re encouraging people to vote for our favorite non-binary acorn! Like last time, we’ll post an art piece we’ve done for everyone who votes.
Tumblr people, can I ask something weird? Can I ask you to vote in a popular tournament poll…. Not on this hellsite? 🥺👉👈
My school’s mascot is Oakie the Acorn, and they’re probably the Tumblr-est mascot you could think of.
I mean, they’re an acorn for goodness’ sake, they’re officially non-binary, and they’re all about sustainability. The school they represent is also very tumblr- SUNY ESF is a school dedicated to saving the Earth, and its student culture makes it a place where the genders are queer and the neuros are divergent :) People just stop to stare at a weird mushroom or interesting insect all the time here, and if someone spots them, instead of ridicule, you’ll probably have two people staring.
In conclusion, vote for Oakie!
My special interests are often what my friends seek me out for lol
(either that or "you're smart help me with this school thing")
what's your 'thing' as a friend. i don't mean like 'oh im the mom friend' i mean like what's the Thing where if one of your friends was looking for a specific interaction they'd message you first. personally i can always be relied upon to get hyped about bugs, literature, and cursed internet images.
Thank you nervoussaladbard! Enjoy this Art Thing. No, I don’t know what this creature is either.
Remember when I asked if people would vote in a tournament poll hosted somewhere other than this hellsite? Well, the final round begins now! Please vote for Oakie the Acorn for me, they’re a quirky little acorn and it would make me very happy! Plus, just like last time, 1 new vote for Oakie = 1 post featuring an art piece by me*! Please like or comment when you vote so I know :)
*which might just be a doodle, but I will try to share things people enjoy!
Ghost has ADHD and autism. They’re the most neurodivergent little mf to ever break your kneecaps.
i'm biased toward vessels with pupils
i don't think people take me too serious when i say i'm legally blind. Like, guys I am legally never allowed to drive, I need assistance with a lot of stuff because I can't see. People both irl and online tend to be like "oh but you're not THAT BAD OFF" it's not a thing of whether my eyes are "that bad off" it doesn't matter, they're still blind. i still use magnifying and screen readers. i'm learning braille because my eyes are getting progressively worse and I'd like to be able to still read.
I may not be totally blind, but that's the thing, a lot of blind people AREN'T Totally blind. Blindness is a spectrum. and i don't think a lot of people realize that. And I'm just as valid in my blindness as someone on the spectrum with better eyesight than me, or someone with worse.
(This is OK to reblog. I hope that sighted people who might read this really get it into their heads that blindness is a spectrum...)

Hi, we're the River System! Katlyn (she/they) and Jacob (he/him). Came for the fandoms, stayed for the off-the-wall and the cringe. 22, autistic (language abled and low support needs), Environmental Biology major. Actual Mad Scientists ;) [We do science and don't do sanity!] Mostly this is Katlyn obsessing over bugs and fandoms (Undertale, Hollow Knight, Little Nightmares, Fire Emblem: Awakening, RWBY, Arcane). Also may include photography, dark aesthetics, and general chaos from Jacob. (Cover photo by Sagar Patil on Unsplash)
