Mini VAT7K Drabble

“Sure they both look like they’ve worked outside, but Varian could just as easily be the son of— that guy!” His arm flew outward toward the first person he saw from the window: an old, scraggly bearded man barely a meter tall and leaning heavily on a goat. Yong gave him a flat look. “Okay bad example, but still!”

Hugo had yet to make it past the mental hurdle of Quirin fathering Varian, which in all fairness, Yong and Nuru were very perplexed by too, but they weren’t the ones having a tantrum over it. Nuru had begun to tune their friend out around ten minutes ago to start scribbling out long, complex equations only to solve them a moment later. Yong, Hugo, and Nuru were brought into Varian’s childhood home to spend the night before completing the final trial and opening the Eternal Library. Quirin had been delighted to welcome Varian’s friends, ushering them in without even a brief assessment of their characters. Varian had looked deeply embarrassed when Hugo asked, admitting that he wasn’t known for making friends, let alone ones his age. Not long after they were settled in the guest bedroom, Quirin had called his son down to help prepare a meal with him, leaving the three friends to muse on the genetic gymnastics that occurred to bring about Varian.

“Maybe he gets it from his mom?” Yong pondered aloud. He withdrew a comb that Hugo didn’t know Yong owned and started to rake it through the burned ends of his hair. They were all a mess. A year on the road had not been kind on their appearances. Hugo was ashamed to say that he hadn’t kept up with his usually close shave along the sides and back of his scalp, allowing the hair there to grow and give him a fluffier look. Most of his clothes had holes in them or stained with some chemical or other. Being Yong’s assistant certainly didn’t help with the smell of gunpowder or the charred nature of his sleeves.

But Nuru was probably the messiest of them all. Her title as Princess was as reflective as her shoes. That is to say, not at all. She had taken up the mantle of navigator with an enthusiasm Hugo hadn’t expected, and she trudged through muck and high water to get them to each trial. A flashback to her waving her sword at a sneezeweazel and the subsequent chase through thorny bramble to get away left their sleeves torn and skin razed made Hugo cringe. The only things Nuru ever managed to keep tidy were her star maps—rest in peace to her skirt of constellations—and her sword. Although she used it frequently to cut through foliage on their journey, Nuru kept her whetstone close and sharpened her blade every night. Even her poor telescope wasn’t kept in as good a condition as her weapon, once using it as a makeshift club to bludgeon a bandit on the road.

Yong, ironically, had most of his things intact. Although that probably wasn’t a testament to how well Yong managed his stuff and more how much Varian kept Yong’s belongings safe for him. Far too often, Varian would be launching forward from his place around the campfire to sweep Yong’s backpack of explosives away from the flames. In fact, Hugo was confident that all of the bags hitched to Prometheus belonged to the pyromaniac. That isn’t to say that Yong made it through their adventures scott-free. When the bounty hunters hired by Yong’s parents caught up to them, Yong had gone a bit off the deep end, tying all of his available fireworks together and nearly blowing the men’s’ heads off. Standing behind an explosion like that turned nearly off of Yong into a pile of ash. He was covered in burns and his eardrums didn’t stop ringing for several hours after. And yet at the end of it all, Varian had pulled the teenager aside with a fresh set of clothes and a pair of flame retardant gloves for Yong to wear.

And speaking of Varian. Easily the clumsiest of the group, Varian was coated head to toe in grime. Even as he fussed over the safety of his friends, or maybe because he worried over them, Varian would fall into the most trouble. Be it from Hugo purposely antagonizing some stranger on the road, Nuru not looking away from the stars long enough to see the sudden dip of the hill she was walking towards, or Yong tampering with one of Hugo’s stink bombs to make them spark, Varian did his best to take the blow. It was annoying. Hugo definitely deserved to be the one with a bucket of muddy water thrown at his face, and it would have been really funny to watch Nuru trip and tumble over the slope, and god did Hugo wish he saw Yong receive his comeuppance when a stray bomb tumbled from his mischievous grip, but Varian had already thrown himself over Yong and stank to high heaven for three days.

While the guy had objectively gotten worse in terms of appearances, Hugo couldn’t seem to choke down the butterflies that emerged when Varian’s dirt covered face appeared and twisted into a grin from the doorway. A pair of cooking mitts the only non-road trodden thing about him now.

“Dinner’s ready!” He cheered, spinning back out and toward the stairs. Hugo spared himself one last look, sighed, and followed after.

Can't you just ask Varian? Bro probably cured cancer as a teen, I don't think he wouldn't the able to help with lactose intolerance

Okay guys, time to divulge you upon my Vat7K PJO AU idea I have which I might turn into a fic

Varian- Tyche Kid

Hugo- Nemesis Kid

Trust me it will make sense soon

Nuru- Hecate Kid

Yong- Hephaestus Kid

Raps- Apollo

Eugene- Aphrodite

Pascal- Satyr

Maximus- Satyr

Ruddiger- Satyr

Cass- Athena

Okay so, it is known that Tyche and Nemesis are rivals of sorts as Tyche is the Goddess of Good Luck and Nemesis the Goddess of Bad Luck

Tyche is obviously Ulla and Nemesis is Donella

Hugo is sort of taken by Nemesis to work for her, he doesn't know but he is actually her son

Hugo has a strong sense of justice and wants to give people what they deserve which is why he helps Donella/Nemesis because he feels he is delivering to people what they deserve with the bad luck

Nemesis then sends him to CHB to hone his skills where she says she will "pretend" to be his Godly Parent (she actually is lol)

He meets Varian, Son of Tyche, basically the opposite of him

Varian is so- nice and- kind, everything seems bright when he's around, unlike Hugo, he makes people feel unsettled, even some of his own cabinmates, besides Caine, they were inseperable, like siblings though Hugo knew they really weren't (The Minor God cabins have been made for this)

Hugo hangs out with Varian though he's not sure why something is just so- warm about him, he can't stay away

Varian is also friends with some other newer campers Nuru, a Daughter of Hecate who often is arguing with Hugo and Yong a Son of Hephaestus with an affinity for fireworks

Hugo feels he doesn't deserve Varian's friendship but Varian won't let him get away that easily now that they're friends!

Hugo then let's Varian know about him not actually being Nemesis' son and how she gave him the power to give bad luck to others, punishing those she deemed needed punishment

Varian said it didn't matter, Hugo was just doing as he thought was right and he couldn't deny that some people are evil, he also understood what it was like doing anything to make a parental figure proud, he explained how- a few years ago he had been trying to help his father and he had an affinity for alchemy, his experiment failed and encased his father, he asked the camp for help but was ignored as they had bigger problems, preparing for a war, eventually his friend Rapunzel was able to help, during the war, Zhan Tiri/Kronos had used Cass as it's host

Hugo then decides he just wants to be able to do what he wants and informs Nemesis he'll no longer be working for her, she then tells him she actually is his mom

Varian was brought to camp by a Satyr named Ruddiger

Also Hugo obviously has an affinity for inventing/engineering and has Olivia!!

Pre-Vat7K stuff, TTS basically

Raps arrived to camp and was a child of Apollo, her Satyr guide was Pascal and Eugene had also helped her get there, she constantly hung around Eugene and ended up being friends with Eugene's best friend Lance and his other friend Cass who no one was sure how they became friends, Pascal was Raps' best friend besides from Cass, she knew Pascal for a while before being brought to camp

Raps and Euegene eventually started dating

When Eugene first came to camp he was brought by Maximus, a satyr who was VERY serious about his job, Eugene spent a long time unclaimed and in the Hermes cabin, everyone thought he WAS a Hermes kid with how many tricks he pulled and how much he stole, turned out he was a charming Aphrodite kid, he was best friends with Lance from the Hermes cabin who he often stole with

Even though Eugene was an Aphrodite kid he didn't try to break anyone's heart, though he wasn't sure he believed much in love in general until of course he met Raps

Because he caused so much trouble the Athena cabin constantly had to clean up after him leaving Cass to constantly try to keep him out of trouble, she was very annoyed by this job

Before coming to camp Raps lived with a lady named Gothel who allegedly adopted her after her mother "died", Gothel let her go to school but sheltered her very much still, she was secretly the goddess Nyx, she kept her away from the world until Pascal found her and told Raps the truth, Raps had to fight Nyx and fought her off with her light powers before fleeing with Pascal to camp

Raps has an affinity for each of Apollo's traits given but she's especially good at music as she is wonderful at the arts

Cass had been wondering the woods one day before confronted by Zhan Tiri, a girl who whispered in her ears little tidbits about the Gods, how they never truly cared about their children, Cass felt herself getting consumed, Zhan Tiri was right.. wasn't she? Athena never tried to contact her or anything

Soon enough Kronos' host was ready

Lady Caine is kinda like Ethan Nakamura in this btw but she lives!!

In the end of it all.. CassCaine!!

Cass is saved by Raps btw and all is good!

A lady is then caught wandering about outside the camp looking for something.. does she know about the camp? Raps goes out to see who it is. It turns out.. it's her mom, Arianna

Btw when Raps uses her light powers her hair is golden but when not using it her hair is brown, also her hair is long all the time lol

I also like the idea for another one where Varian is a Thanatos kid and Hugo an Eros kid

Thanaros and Eros would both be nb in this and Thanatos obviously Ulla and Eros is obviously Donnie

I feel like Hugo's betrayal would be parallel to when Varian reveals his criminal past, but also not really? I like to think Varian would've revealed his past by himself, rather than waiting for the group to stumble across a wanted poster or smth. I also think Hugo would've figured it out a while ago, and while Nuru and Yong would be mad that he hid it for so long, they'd soon realise that he's changed his ways, and their friendship and trust would grow stronger.

When it comes to Hugo's betrayal, however, he hid it for much longer. Donella was also the one to tell everyone, not giving Hugo a chance to explain himself. Another thing is that nobody in team radical knew or could really relate, except for maybe Varian but he was too heartbroken at that point. While Varian was comforted by Hugo after his reveal, Hugo had nobody. He was stuck with Nuru and Yong, who hated him at that moment, and Varian just ran off.

I also think that for Varian, Nuru would be more upset but for Hugo, it'd be Yong.

Yet ANOTHER silly (which for me, means angsty) headcannon

What if, after years of explosions and poud sounds from the fireworks, Yong actually goes deaf?

And yes, I know Varian was around a ton of explosions with his science and everything but the entire point of fireworks is that they explode one way or another and since he'd be a stupid little kid when he started making them he probably wouldn't take proper safety measures, so he would slowly lose his hearing.

And let's say he didn't really notice it, for him barely being able to hear (I wanna say he's completely deaf in one ear and mostly deaf in the other) is just normal for him and while he finds it weird how Yong asks him to repeat everything or speak louder, Varian would just assume its him trying to understand it better but Hugo, that would be a different story.

Hugo gets just a tiny bit sick of having to yell for the kid to hear him, but his annoyance turns to concern when one day Yong almost gets run over when the Caravan's breaks malfunctioned and Hugo had to shove him out of the way since Yong didn't move when he screamed (Varian and Nuru were out buying food or something in this senerio) so he finally starts to actually ask proper questions and Yong just says "Yeah, I can't hear most of the time" or something like it's completely normal?!

So, after hearing all this. Hugo not only teaches Yong (and later the rest of the gang) Ingvarian sign language (since he used it with Olivia sometimes) but made Yong either hearing aids or later on cochlear implants and Yong is just completely flabbergasted at how things normally sound like for people and might get overwhelmed with the sounds so they have to help him get used to it and this could actually help him make fireworks better since he could recalibrate the explosions or something? (Idk how fireworks work) and it would just be reaaaaaaaly cute<3.
