it's cool how they have a reference just for Fukiko's hair... not exactly a braid, but the component of her hair that's somewhat analogous to one. So elegant...

It's really hard to understand what is and isn't bodily autonomy when it comes to social pressures. Do people want to alter their bodies or are they being pressured into it... but really, there is no such thing as an authentic individual self that can make these decisions free of pressure. We are social pressure, it's part of us just like our bodies

but looking at your phone to consume even more media in the middle of reading is maximalist and excessive, solar-economy pilled

(not sure if I'm /s or /j with this one)

every time you assume a post about art & transgression is referring to pornographic fanfiction about cartoons you should be locked in a cell and not released until you’ve read at least 1 work by georges bataille (you have to start over if you look at your phone)

It's a probably a distortion based on whoever stopped sending Zheng He

*Looks up* the Hongxi and Xuande emperors.

Totally a wrong narrative, really it was admirable that these emperors didn't want to go down the overseas colonization path + they never closed off the country

a while ago i heard someone say “it’s crazy to think that china used to be a world superpower, and then one of their emperors decided he hated all foreigners and completely closed the country off, and they’ve never recovered since. imagine what they could have been if not for that one man’s decision” and the thing that drives me nuts is i know a lot of chinese history and i cannot for the life of me think who this might be about

In Yume Nikki,

Isn't the idea that the staircase to the sky garden is a step pyramid entirely inspired by people mischaracterizing the Paracas art as "Mesoamerican?" People assume it's an Aztec or Maya pyramid. But the only reference to Indigenous Americas culture is Paracas imagery, which has no particular connection to the distant Mesoamerican region. So there really isn't any reason to assume these steps are part of some kind of Aztec or Maya structure

Every time I read a different translation of Senbonzakura I feel less confident as to what it's talking about.

The imagery is also confusing, with lines like "pacifist nation" mixed into what sound like nationalist propaganda, or mention of science fiction weaponry... but I think the language might be too complicated for anyone who isn't a fluent Japanese speaker to understand, especially since no professional translation seems to exist

I'm suspicious of the narrative that it's just propaganda, though, because that seems kind of too literal and unimaginative

People have noticed! My uninformed guess is that whoever is writing these is trying to like, emulate some kind of Chinese prose style that has lots of four-character phrases/proverbial allusions or something? And is using English figures of speech as an equivalent? But I can't read or speak any kind of Chinese so I don't know if that's a real feature of Chinese prose writing. It's just a vibe I get that this is a translation of something that hit different in the source language

I'm sure it was because of volcano activity, people saw fire emerging from the earth and so always had a vague idea that beneath the surface, it was hot. The Phlegraean fields, Vesuvius, Etna etc.

btw does the characterisation of christian hell being hot and underground predate modern knowledge about earth's core and magma layers? was it because people dug deep enough to notice it was hotter? did people directly attribute the eruption of volcanos to something exiting from inside the earth and therefore hell? i haven't read dante's inferno feel like that might have some answers.

Twinned with "was it written on drugs" for how destructive and limited a way of interpreting weird stuff it is

But it's also a problem that it implies the sex aspect is inherently a bad motivation, or that such an aspect can't be scrambled together with other motivations to make something really powerful

idk it seems almost like...screening the writer for aberrant sexual interests has become a standard part of how people interpret fiction that is even a little edgy and it's not good? reading someone's work and being like "is this a sex thing? is it? is it???" before you feel you can speak on it is pretty limiting, and if you're actually taking the writer to task on social media about this it's just creepy or straight-up sexual harassment. let the writing speak for itself girl, you're not this person's therapist

A lot of people perceived her as being cringe for political reasons, but they didn't realize that all British classicists are cringe

like how Armand d'Angour did good work reconstructing Ancient Greek music, but his poetry is truly repulsive

the emily wilson odyssey discourse happening is so funny because. yeah. if you actually sit down and try to do a strict translation of most ~epic poems~ they don't sound ~epic~ at all. sometimes they sound flat out stupid, even after you're done fixing the syntax for english. this is true of pretty much every Ancient Text.

My opinion: Yukio Mishima doesn't fit into the "Dai-Nippon Gothic" aesthetic. Mishima's writing is suffused by sunlight and healthy, powerful bodies, symbolic opposites of what "gothic" makes us feel. Mishima's writing is the sea under blue skies and the Ise Grand Shrine. Gothic is disease, frail bodies, lightless spaces.

The difference is that Mishima was actually a fascist and believed it was beautiful, while the Dai-Nippon gothic aesthetic uses imperialist imagery as a form of grotesque violence, mixed up with disease and perversion. Mishima's view on death can shade into this but there's a disconnect because in the gothic aesthetic, it's an outsider's perspective on fascism. Fascism as excessive violence, extravagant criminality, a heterotopia where everyday morality is reversed.

It would be wrong to reduce "Dai-Nippon Gothic" to the restrictive label 'antifascist' but I don't think real fascism can mix coherently with the aesthetic.

Writers who the "Dai-Nippon" aesthetic would do well to appropriate --- Ranpo, Yumeno Kyūsaku, maybe Izumi Kyōka, definitely much of the work of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki.

Of course, recontextualized images of Mishima can be appropriated but it's good to remember they're being twisted away from their original meaning

The Kazoku peerage of the Japanese empire.

According to the article I read, it was considered a status symbol among them to not know how to perform basic tasks due to reliance on servants. It's a fascinating contrast from the kind of values we have today, isn't it? I got the impression that their ideal of the most noble life was not merely leisure, but perfect stasis like a marine invertebrate that sticks to rocks forever.

Maybe we'd all see things that way if we never had to work

Although I don't think it's something from the game, the guest book on the silvery tablecloth, against those walls, gives the exact vibes of a scene from Ib but in real life. Whoever designed this knew what they were doing!

I went to the Ib exhibition!!! Here’s some pictures!!!! I couldn’t include everything because tumblr only allows 10 images on mobile only which is a bummer

It was really cool!! Some of the paintings actually moved, and there was a section where we were given VR headsets and got to experience the doll room scene with Garry and the key which was very neat!! Also Garry’s acrylic stand at the gift shop was totally sold out LOL

IMO vampire can mean anyone and everyone who doesn't fit into the ideology of work and employment, which includes both feudal nobility and ppl begging for money at opposite ends of the spectrum, it can be exploited or exploiters, whats important is that they do not contribute to the homogenized social order (which is basically good even for the nobility)

I know vampirism is often used as a metaphor for the drain of the aristocracy but I think it would be fun to have more vampire characters who were just some guy before they got turned. You seek out the most ancient vampire in existence and find out he was a 40 year old wheat farmer in ancient Mesopotamia when he was turned 7,000 years ago and he hasn’t been doing much since then.

🩷Heraclitus

Favorite Heraclitus

If all things were turned to smoke, the nostrils would distinguish them

All the things we see when awake are death, even as all we see in slumber are sleep

Man kindles a light for himself in the night-time, when he has died but is alive. The sleeper, whose vision has been put out, lights up from the dead; he that is awake lights up from the sleeping

This world,[13] which is the same for all, no one of gods or men has made; but it was ever, is now, and ever shall be an ever-living Fire, with measures of it kindling, and measures going out

Men that love wisdom must be acquainted with very many things indeed.

Wisdom is one thing. It is to know the thought by which all things are steered through all things

We step and do not step into the same rivers; we are and are not.

Time is a child playing draughts, the kingly power is a child's

Mortals are immortals and immortals are mortals, the one living the others' death and dying the others' life.

They are estranged from that with which they have most constant intercourse

Those who are asleep are fellow-workers (in what goes on in the world)

It is pleasure to souls to become moist.

The lord whose is the oracle at Delphoi neither utters nor hides his meaning, but shows it by a sign

The sun will not overstep his measures; if he does, the Erinyes, the handmaids of Justice, will find him out

It is best to hide folly; but it is hard in times of relaxation, over our cups.

To God all things are fair and good and right, but men hold some things wrong and some right

Cold things become warm, and what is warm cools; what is wet dries, and the parched is moistened.
