What books are next on your reading list?
Besides books I need to read for work...I'm trying to get my brother and I to read together. Mostly, he's suppose to read a Jane Austen book while I read Horatio Hornblower...
Instead, he's reading Beowulf while I'm reading Just Stab Me Now so you can see how that's going. š¤£
This weird thing happened to me too. It was nice at first because "Ahh! š Someone likes my work!" To "Wait da second? Why is this person commenting on how moving my writing is on my fanfic where I just post pictures? šµ"
Out of all the spammers I got, these bots were the nicest. (Especially after the panderers attempting to snag kids on my PG fanfic. š”) But I still wish the person wrote a real comment actually praising parts of my work. (Again, praising me for moving writing on the fanfic with only artwork [not a comic], didn't even mention the AU the pictures were for)
Good news, haven't seen the bots in months. If they show up tomorrow, a work is getting put on private.
Any other AO3 writers getting spammed by comments that actually look like real comments but are rather⦠repetitive? Theyāre nice, effusive even, but after the second or third one I got suspicious. Not sure what the point of them is. Canāt find any links or anything that would make it a trap. Any ideas?
Yes, you read the title right! We're talking about the pillows in Lurien's Spire!
Basically, I ran across a few articles calling the Watcher gaudy and greedy, lumping him with Hallownestian nobles. The Watcher, however, is not gaudy like the nobles of Hallownest. Before we bring in the pillows, let us compare the pictures down below.
Vs. the Watcher's Spire.
While there is a lot of details going on in all three photos, it is far easier to filter out Lurienās Spire than the nobles. The purple in the Watcherās Spire calms the player versus the red constantly popping in the nobleās houses.
That, and it took me four years before I realized that Lurien had wallpaper while every detail of the noble's houses was screaming in my face.
Now, we can bring in the pillows. We shall point out the pillows, discuss their arrangement, and what both say of the characters of the nobles and the Watcher himself.
In the noble houses, all the pillows are in the center of the room.
Meanwhile, in the Watcherās Spire, the pillows are by the windows.
All the pillows in the noblesā houses are facing the center where the nobles can be the focal point of attention. Where the point could be is either the red couches or the pillows themselves, but any visitor would certainly be hyper-focused on the noble by the mere seating arrangement.
If this was not the City of Tears that we know, such an arrangement could show how everyone is focused on the people and community. Unfortunately, we know thanks to the Dream Nail how all the nobles were overprotective of their geo. The arrangement of the pillows and seating of the guests was only to show off a nobleās wealth, not foster familial ties.
The Watcherās Spire, however, has the opposite arrangement of pillows. The seating arrangement looks outside of the Spire, not in. Lurien invites any visitor to his Spire to admire not his wealth, but the wealth and health of the City.
One could argue that Watcherās arrangement of pillows show how he is always looking outwards instead of reflecting upon himself and his faults, but considering the nobleās thoughts and intentions, I believe that Lurien is not selfish in looking outwards as his pillow arrangement is completely opposite of the nobles. Luriem is always looking out to his community AND loves to admire the beauty resulting from the community.
Finally, Lurien still loves both practicality and beauty as seen in his window designs by the pillows. The noblesā design for the window is pathetic in comparison, though one must be grateful for being to see out of said window. Ā
As for more comparisons of Lurien with other characters in Hollow Knight, let us marvel at how patriotic Lurien is.
All the little details.
I swear, Lurien is more patriotic than the Pale King. Compare the opening of Lurien's Spire to the White Palace.
VS.
Remember, Lurien's wallpaper still counts.
I wonder how Lurien being more patriotic than the Pale King speaks about his character?
As a Lurien fan, I am afraid that I must admit there is not enough evidence in the Spire alone to answer that question. Right now, these photos suggest that Lurien was Nationalistic while the Pale King was Patriotic.
Yet, once we look at both of their actions in-game, we can determine that Lurien is indeed Patriotic, not Nationalistic. Afterall, it is Lurien who makes the ultimate sacrifice for Hallownest not once but twice, even when he knew the Pale King wasnāt coming back. The Pale King, meanwhile, sacrificed everyone but himself, then fled from the Radiance when the Infection returned.
If both Lurien and the PKās actions were foreshadowed by the amount of Hallownestian seals and crests, wellā¦I do not feel as if I can make that judgement due to my basis on Lurien. I shall leave that to the community to decide.

You know when Mewtwo bit Newtwo when they were younger? This is how I imagined it went lol
that's what I was mimicking with it actually
I have to draw a lot of gold and metal for my work, but wasn't happy with any of the metal tutorials i could find around. I prefer really specific instruction, so after some research i put together what i think works as a generalist's guide/tutorial. Not perfectly accurate, but i hope it's helpful!

Very well done analysis of Adaman.
Ā p(An Analysis on the character design of Adaman from Pokemon Legends of Arceus and itās relation to time and art history.)
A lot of the characters form PLA are similar in terms of design. The characters that do not follow the standard hoodies, tunics, guild jumpsuits ,and kimonos have a lot of interesting art history associated with them.Ā I love Adamanās design in particularĀ since he is literally a symbol of time.Ā
Wellā¦isnāt this obvious since he is the Diamond Clan leader and associated with Dialga? Yes, but there is a lot more subtle aspects to his design that link him with a specific form or Japanese Art.Ā But letās first look at the obvious references to Dialga .
In Adamanās design they use a lot of blues and and silver that you can see shared with Dialga.Ā They also use the Diamond clan symbol that is shaped to look like Dialgaās chest gem repeatedly in the coat and accessories.Ā Adamanās coat/jacket is most likely a nod to the Japanese Haori.Ā It is even tied with a fancy beaded Himo chord to keep it closed. If you look at the shoes you can see in the concept art that even the bottom of them are supposed to look like Dialgaās feet in their regular form and on the top of the shoe like the legendary Pokemonās face.Ā All this information is very interesting and nice seeing how the character and the Pokemon are related even thematically.Ā Ā
However, itās crossed your mind (even briefly) that Adamanās design is not directly one to one with Dialga. He isnāt a Dialga gijinka. There are elements and colors that Adaman uses that the legendary Pokemon does not.Ā We can brush it off as Adaman having a flair and his importance as a Diamond Clan leader to set him apart. But this is where it gets interesting. His outfit is generally just fashionable and we can choose to look at it like that on a surface level.Ā But if you look deeper you see a more symbolic meaning.
Adaman is Kintsugi . What is that? Kintsugi is a Japanese art technique that repairs pottery using lacquer and gold dust.Ā Adaman also has similar gold veins running through his clothing.Ā For someone who is soĀ āput togetherā looking, why would you intentionally create jagged and uneven elements other than for aesthetic? This is because for my understanding, this is yet another way the character designer chose to express Adamanās connection to time.
Kintsugi is a beautiful form of art and philosophy.Ā The idea is not to hide the cracks and flaws, but to turn it into something more beautiful and strong.Ā It represents the passage of time and a documentation of the harsh conditions in which we pass through. But ultimately it is a celebration of survival and growth.Ā It is also a metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections.
One translation defines the wordĀ kintsugi as golden āgolden seamsā. So, Adaman is kind of a symbol of kintsugi pottery and philosophy.Ā The part about this design that confused me the most was his hair since itās also not standard colored and is quite unique. But I realized that if we are equating him to pottery, the hair might be colored that way to imitate pottery glazes (the stuff they put on ceramics to give it color.)
On another interesting note, Adaman has lots of signs of past injury. We see this with the bandages on his arms and hands, the cut brow which is a remnant of injury and survival, and then the very intentional jagged gold claw marks on his back.Ā The back gold lines are sharp looking and contrast with the rest of the designs which is fluid and rounded.Ā Itās bringing attention to the marks.
Image sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4Ā / 5Ā / 6
We can interpret a lot from this design. It also raises many questions. The jagged golden marks and Adamanās bandaged arms implies that he has beenĀ ādamagedā or ābrokenā in some sense. This could be taken literally or symbolically. We donāt know what happened to him.Ā Maybe he was attacked by an alpha Pokemon and survived a severe injury that he now incorporates into this aesthetic as a way to show that he was able to come back from that.Ā Or maybe itās referring to his leadership as a young Diamond Clan leader and the mistakes he made and had to learn from.Ā
So in conclusion. From what I can understand , if we were to wrap up all the motifs, Adamanās design ultimately seems to just represent a passage of time. Breakage and repair are just proof of time passing and represent history and life. And I think that is really cool.Ā Ā
These are all my speculations and none of it is canon you can disagree if you want. These are just things I have observed and made note of that I believe makes the character far more interesting and fleshed out.Ā There is a lot of deep and meaningful things you can pull from this if you want to expound further through fanart and fanfic.Ā Ā
EDITS/NOTES:
So a lot of people asked if the arm and hand wraps are for fighting. They arenāt. In every form of fighting and martial arts that involves wrapping(taping) your knuckles, you wrap between each finger and around your knuckles several times to cushion them.Ā You do their for wrist stability, prevent injury, and joint restriction.Ā Failing to wrap your hands correctly will result in fractures, broken fingers and knuckles, and metal carpet boss.Ā Not only are Adamanās knuckles exposed when he clenches his fists, there is no wrapping supporting his wrists on the left hand.Ā If he is wrapping them to fight, he is doing a very bad job at it.
I did research on this before writing the initial post and came to this conclusion, but I guess Iāll add it now for those that had questions.
Another interesting note is that the Diamond Clan symbol also looks like a stylized version of the characters for gold.Ā This same character also does appear in the work kintsugi.
Adamanās name is interesting too since itās not really a common name.Ā In fact, it seems to be a play on wordĀ āadamantā which usually refers to someone who is not willing to change their mind or opinion.Ā HOWEVER , Adamant is an archaic diamond found in Greek/Roman mythology.Ā It is a bit of a legendary diamond of sorts. The name is derived from the Greek word for diamond. āadĆ”masā.
If you remember, in the Diamond and Pearl games you can use theĀ āAdamant Orbā to increase the dragon/steel type moves of Dialga by 20% if they hold it. In Pokemon Legends Arceus you can get theĀ āAdament Crystal from Adaman.Ā This can be used to switch Dialga between Origin and normal form.Ā Ā
Also random interesting thought. The diamond clan settlement is located in the crimson mirelands. Out of the different areas, this one has the most ideal conditions to create pottery clay next to bodies of water (Lake valor) , the scarlet bog, and the mountainous areas surrounding the settlement. Very similar to the Mashiko and Hagi pottery villages in japan.
