Bug Of The Day: RHINOCEROS BEETLE
Been hyperfixating on insects recently because i`m drawing them for my school project. I've always loved bugs but this just started a whole ass obsession, they bring me so much joy ^^ What beetle should i draw next?
Edit: Only now realized the typo in the name. Will have to fix that if i want to turn it into stickers :/

I, uh, might do thatโฆ except Iโd probably worry too much about the welfare of the bugs.
Me walking around with a โFree Bugsโ T-shirt and when people ask I point out all the little guys around them and tell them which ones are introduced species that they can totally just grab off the street and keep as pets
walking around with aย โFree Bugsโ tshirt and cargo pants with a lot of very full pockets that are visibly writhingย
i love you wasps i love you flies i love you beetles i love you moths i love you non-bee pollinators i love you "uncharismatic" organisms who nonetheless carry our ecosystem on your backs
Wasps are great! Some social wasps can not only recognize individuals of their own species, they can recognize humans as well and โbefriendโ people!
Iโve had positive experiences with the yellowjackets that live around campus at my school- my school is full of insect lovers who are pretty chill about them, and I think they recognize that at least some of the humans around them are friendly, as theyโll often land on me or share a bite of my lunch, but have never stung me or been aggressive, and I havenโt heard anyone talk about them stinging people.
There are also lots of cool wasps outside of yellowjackets and hornets, many of which cannot sting. Some of them are ridiculously tiny- the smallest insect in the world is a type of fairy wasp smaller than some single-called parameciums and amoebas. (Wikipedia article here if youโre interested.) Wasps are incredibly diverse and beautiful, and we neednโt fear and loathe them because a few of them might sting.
[Image description from alt text: A photo of a small brown wasp pollinating a dandelion. Only part of the dandelion flower is visible, because it dwarfs the wasp in size. The wasp has faint, light stripes on its abdomen, bent antennae, and purplish eyes.]
I saw this posted on reddit to a wholesome memes sub, and it was full of nothing but people being unnecessarily awful on a post trying to spread information about why these creatures are beautiful and worthy of living. (Interesting note: They don't need a reason to be allowed to live.) I got sick of trying to correct people on there who were more interested in hating wasps than hearing the truth.
Honestly, it's just exhausting sometimes.

NO ANTI-WASP SENTIMENTS ON THIS POST
Butterflies are basically just a subgroup of moths. I think we as a society need to appreciate moths more.
btw we as a society need to redeem the reputation of moths. Butterflies are seen as beautiful and beneficial and a normal thing to like, but moths are gross and creepy and ugly???
It's so dumb! Moths can be beautiful and colorful like butterflies can be and they are important pollinators! They visit flowers that bees ignore! Moths are a way larger and more diverse group than butterflies anyway!!

Hug your local bug! (Metaphorically as they are small)

This. This is what got me into insects and other โbugsโ as a small child. I was (and still am) an animal lover and they were the animals that were right there in my backyard and easy enough for a child to catch and play with. They are such cute little creatures ๐ชฒ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐
everyone should try to get into bugs because they fulfill all your primal needs to get Way Too Close to wildlife and hold and pet wild creatures
When you start recognizing bugs as friendly and cute little Guys, your world opens up so much.
They're easy to obtain. Do you want isopods? Just put a piece of cardboard on the ground and you will have isopods. There's a straight-up CLOUD of bees, wasps, butterflies, and flies around my Swamp Milkweed. Planting any native flower will make you so many friends. Better yet, do nothingโany somewhat overgrown area is habitat. I was hacking down some of the grasses in the Weed Area in our back yard yesterday (the non-native chicory is overpopulated and the native perennials are getting swallowed up by a Crap Ton of non-native grass) and found a enormous katydid.
I am feeling such awe and wonder over how tame and unbothered insects are in front of humans. Lots of them you can catch and hold in your hands and they will just be like oop oh well this is strange sorry to bother you and fly away.
They are so beautiful too! The COLORS. Electric blue! Iridescent green! Bright red! Every metallic shade! Rainbow! Our yard is full of dragonflies now and they've got to be one of the world's most elegant creatures.
