i love you wasps i love you flies i love you beetles i love you moths i love you non-bee pollinators i love you "uncharismatic" organisms who nonetheless carry our ecosystem on your backs
Wasps are great! Some social wasps can not only recognize individuals of their own species, they can recognize humans as well and ābefriendā people!
Iāve had positive experiences with the yellowjackets that live around campus at my school- my school is full of insect lovers who are pretty chill about them, and I think they recognize that at least some of the humans around them are friendly, as theyāll often land on me or share a bite of my lunch, but have never stung me or been aggressive, and I havenāt heard anyone talk about them stinging people.
There are also lots of cool wasps outside of yellowjackets and hornets, many of which cannot sting. Some of them are ridiculously tiny- the smallest insect in the world is a type of fairy wasp smaller than some single-called parameciums and amoebas. (Wikipedia article here if youāre interested.) Wasps are incredibly diverse and beautiful, and we neednāt fear and loathe them because a few of them might sting.
[Image description from alt text: A photo of a small brown wasp pollinating a dandelion. Only part of the dandelion flower is visible, because it dwarfs the wasp in size. The wasp has faint, light stripes on its abdomen, bent antennae, and purplish eyes.]
I saw this posted on reddit to a wholesome memes sub, and it was full of nothing but people being unnecessarily awful on a post trying to spread information about why these creatures are beautiful and worthy of living. (Interesting note: They don't need a reason to be allowed to live.) I got sick of trying to correct people on there who were more interested in hating wasps than hearing the truth.
Honestly, it's just exhausting sometimes.

Happy Halloween! š
For you and all your cockroach buddies
Weāve seen people talking about this and wanted to join in. Hereās our costume!
[Image Description from alt text: An image of a person in a homemade cockroach costume, taken from the back. The costume features long brown āwingsā attached to the back of their shirt, an oval with a black pattern on it representing a cockroachās pronotum covering the back of their neck, and a headband with long orange āantennae.ā End ID.]
Weāre an Australian Cockroach, Periplaneta australasiae!
Happy Halloween!!!
Bug zappers kill bugs by the thousands. But thereās a problem: They kill the wrong bugs. They are ineffective against mosquitoes and other biting flies, and their otherwise indiscriminate killing can disrupt pollination and generally throw the environment out of balance. Plus, the force of their electrocution can spew a mist of disease-ridden bug parts out into the air. All of the mosquito experts we spoke with and every relevant university extension office we could find unanimously condemned bug zappers. To keep an area free of bugs or to prevent yourself from getting bitten, there are much better alternatives.

I hate walking outside and hearing something crunch underfoot. I never know if itās a stick or if I now have to mourn some hapless invertebrate I accidentally crushed.
Wow. Just wow. Iād heard about bees playing, but I didnāt know some of the other cool things mentioned in this video, like the fact that bees can learn by watching others. šš
This is why I donāt squash insects that happen to wander into the house. This is why I am against that sort of careless killing. Because we so drastically underestimate what insects are capable of. They are living beings, quite possibly each with their own desires and fears and inner lives. Many people forget that insects are animals. Many people forget that so are we.
honestly, the things that insects are capable of will never cease to amaze me
Vote for Norman, heās from a disturbing song about religious abuse. Donāt know the source media? Spend less than 5 minutes listening to this song.Ā (Trigger warnings for religious abuse/religious trauma, disturbing imagery, and bugs including spiders.) Now you do. Also, the name āNorman Minecraftā was decided by the fans.Ā
So. The acorn we were all rooting for lost the poll. Wolfie the Seawolf has been announced the victor. But! It was the closest race in the 10-year history of Mascot Madness.
Thank you all for joining me and supporting the silly acorn with me!
Especially, I ought to thank those I havenāt made an art post for! Thank you @gelatinous-jellyfish
Enjoy some insect doodles!
Thank you @neon-draws-sometimes
I drew this on one of those scratch-off things. Theyāre such fun!
Thank you @ephemeral-system
This is similar to the last one, but I edited the photo of it and I couldnāt decide whether I wanted to post the original or the edited version. So I made a collage with both!
Again, thank you all!

Butterflies are basically just a subgroup of moths. I think we as a society need to appreciate moths more.
btw we as a society need to redeem the reputation of moths. Butterflies are seen as beautiful and beneficial and a normal thing to like, but moths are gross and creepy and ugly???
It's so dumb! Moths can be beautiful and colorful like butterflies can be and they are important pollinators! They visit flowers that bees ignore! Moths are a way larger and more diverse group than butterflies anyway!!
WIP from drawing a bee beetle awhile back. (...Somehow I like going back to look at WIPs more than finished pieces, idk why š¤·)
Anyway I think we can all agree that bee beetles are Very Good beetles, yes? Yes.
