i think the absolute best way to write ron is to make him so calm and easy-going and mellow (in his pov), especially in how he thinks abt himself, the epitome of "i'm just a chill guy :]"
and then you read the subtext/context/what's actually going on Outside his Head and suddenly he's being physically restrained from punching a bitch and getting into all-out public brawls that get them kicked out of stores

there is an interesting tension to be had when both the malfoy and weasley families have been sorted into their respective hogwarts house for generations upon generations, and we come to find that despite surface-level appearances: draco isn't the most slytherin of slytherins, and ron isn't the most gryffindor of gryffindors
ron would be the sibling that's the most sympathetic to percy's conflicts with and eventual leaving of the family imo
they both do this to each other btw, draco even started it. in his mind ron occupies a space scarily adjacent to beloved little pet.
draco, mentally, while stroking ron's hair: i've always wanted a puppy.
"It worried Ron sometimes, and the uncomfortable, hard edge of it pressed up against his side even when he wasn't-- that Draco only kept agreeing to these meetings not (only) out of obligation, but because he viewed him as some petty form of entertainment. A talking, dancing monkey in a long line of dancing monkeys, that he deigned to wave a hand at and let amuse him after he grew bored, of-- of swimming in a massive pool filled to the brim with his own Galleons, or whatever it is rich bastards did in their free time.
hell, the way he looked at him sometimes, undeniably fond, but exactly in the way you'd look at a pet that just did something cute-- the way he put his hands on him, how he liked to curl one around the back of his neck to prompt Ron to look up at him, then thread it in his hair and keep it there, proprietary."
draco is incredibly touch starved, obviously (we're going off of pure canon where it's clear he has no real friends, and his parents aren't exactly . . huggers), and so what ends up happening eventually is that ron just takes to petting him like he's a damn dog:
i'd like to highlight specially the scenes above where ppl just freaking, rub a hand over the entirety of will's face, bc first off wth, and second off draco would LIVE for that shit he is so pathetic wet car.
and they cuddle. obviously. draco is clingy asf. as they bond he takes to standing with his arm around ron's waist whenever they're next to each other, specifically bc ron's taller and he thinks thats awesome, actually

the lil mannerisms and micro-struggles i give these british teenage boys are so . . unabashedly girl-coded, undoubtedly bc im a gal myself, in what i hope is in a subtle way but idek atp,,,
draco slaps half a pound of gel onto his head whenever he's too dead inside to do his hair in the morning, ron gets sidelined and mansplained to constantly and chooses to smile genially and take it bc it'd take just too much energy to get properly offended abt it . . .
draco hides nearly every single emotion he has behind a polite, blank smile whenever he's not (performatively) taking out his pent-up anger on the gryff trio, he is performing for an audience even when he's not supposed to be, when he's taking a break from the mask to be nasty and cruel . . but of course you have to be nasty and cruel in just the right way of course . . .
ron has so deeply internalized the belief that you have to be exceptional (something he is inherently, at the absolute base-level, not, he believes) to be worthy as a person that he's completely stopped putting in any effort at all; has so completely given up hope for himself (his erised-reflected pipe dream of standing out: head boy, quidditch captain, etc) that he struggles to see his own positive/arguably exceptional aspects at all; is living, essentially, in low power mode . . .
Ron would be an auror yes, not bc he's particularly ambitious or glory/thrill/danger-seeking or combat-talented or morally driven, but bc it's the closest thing to a Detective the wizarding world has and i think he'd be rlly good at that
at the risk of sounding like i think ron's only likeable bc he's "special" in some way (untrue): this dude doesnt understand ron's sokka-from-atla and lance-from-vld coded šØ (team's strategist and heart)

Why do people who dont like Ron and Ginny automatically get accused of classicism and anti poor bigotry? I am not saying there are no people who hate Weasleys for being poor, the fandom is huge and all stripes of folks can be found here even the most despicable.
Most people I know who don't like Ron and Gin Gin also have Weasleys they do like such as : Fred, George, Percy, Bill, Arthur and Molly. (Yeah I don't get Molly bashing. She gave Harry his 1st motherly hug, loves her family and defeated Bellatrix. What's not to love? )
I personally don't like Ron, not coz he's poor and red head and all that shite. But coz he's very unremarkable, insecure, not too bright and not charismatic.
He's a good egg but have a distinct sidekick energy and not main character vibe like Harry, Hermione, Tom, Severus, Albus, Sirius, James, does.
And he's not brilliant like Percy, enterprising like the twins or cool like Bill.
He's like the characters Jonah Hill played once upon a time: Good hearted but ordinary, goofy guys.
These characters are good in comic scenes or slice of life dramas but not as the Main Male character or love interest in epic, larger than life romantic fics.
He's good. But he's not love interest material for most straight/bi women and gay/bi men.
I am sure in real life many of us would be happy to date a guy like Ron. But when it comes to reading fics, he's just not that guy you feel interested in.
He's that good, stable, nice guy your parents hope you end up with and they are right too.
But not the type of guy you fantasize about or want to read as MC or love interest.
He's too much of an every man, he reminds many of us too much of ordinary blokes we know to read him as MC or love interest.
me whenever ron's unnecessarily mean to some rando (never his friends, bc he's loyal like that) for fun: she just wanna party [shrugs] aint nothin wrong with that
social interaction is a game to ron and 9/10ths of the time he's winning, he's being a goddamn sleuth, he's having the absolute time of his life
social interaction is a game to draco and it stresses him tf out--if he makes one wrong move he keels over and dies
Whatās something about Ron Weasley as a character that you think is underrated?
That Ron is really, really funny, and that his sense of humour isn't a sign of immaturity or gratuitous comic relief for the reader's sake, but an absolutely essential part of what both Harry and Hermione value in Ron as a character as an antidote to their own tendencies (moodiness and seriousness/anxiousness, respectively). Ron makes bad days bearable to get through for the people around him. I think people mistake Ron making jokes for a lack of emotional awareness, but I actually think itās the opposite. By the series end Ron is literally the most emotionally well-adjusted of the central canon characters. That line about Peevesā poem right at the end of DH when the war is won (āReally gives a feeling for the scope and tragedy of the thing, doesn't it?ā) is a) brilliant and b) such a great manifesto for how Ronās outlook on the world ā not humour as emotional avoidance, but humour that sits within all the grief and pain and suffering, and makes it that bit more bearable. So yeah Ron Weasleyās love for chuckles is Important and Overlooked and I will keep saying it til I am blue in the face
idgaf i will never get tired of the dog motif. it will never be cliche it will never be trite it will never not hit hard. i see a dog coded character crawl back to their owner even after being kicked and the inside of my brain looks like this
one of the v. important things the movies missed about ron is just like, how down to fight he was at all times. like not even duel just he was always ready to physically beat the shit out of people who insulted his family or friends and WOULD if no one stopped him.
there are so many points in the books where its just casually dropped inĀ āand so Harry and/or Hermione had to physically restrain Ronā usually from Malfoy but if Harry or Hermione werenāt paying attention it becameĀ āand so Ron punched Malfoy in the faceā.Ā
Like, Ron cursing Malfoy for calling Hermione Mudblood wasnt just a one off thing like every time he did that in the future when Ron was there it was likeĀ āron had to be stopped from ending Malfoyās lifeā just thrown in there. Same for any other severe insults.
My absolute favorite instance of this is in the first book when theyāre just watching a Quidditch game and Malfoy just starts bothering Ron and Hermione during it and is finally likeĀ āman its pretty funny how the Gryffindor quidditch team is recruited based on pity like yāknow Potter has no parents, Weasleyās brothers have no money they should include Longbottom for having no brainsā and Ron just flings himself at Malfoy and starts punching him and rolling around under the bleachers and Neville is likeĀ āuh shit i guess i better fight CRABBE AND GOYLE BOTH AT ONCE so they donāt go after himā (very underrated moment of courage from Neville he knew he had no chance but he just went for it honestly almost more impressive than confronting Voldemort in book 7)
and theyāre just fighting for like twenty minutes and Hermione doesnāt even notice because she was so focused on tuning Malfoy out and watching the game and when its over she looks around likeĀ āwhereād ron goā and then later its mentionedĀ āHarry sees Ron and his face is covered in blood and heās likeĀ āGOOD JOB WINNING THE GAME HARRY I GAVE MALFOY A BLACK EYE SO WE BOTH DID GREAT THINGS TONIGHT oh btw i have detention for a week and nevilleās unconcious but they say heāll be fineā.
Ron is ride or die and will fight u for $0 yāallĀ
