TOGA IN WONDERLAND
Frank Gorshin, Anthony Perkins and Davy Jones (of the monkees) are Batman 1966's version of The Riddler, The Scarecrow and The Mad Hatter. I know the '66 show had David Wayne as The Mad Hatter, but he's not that exciting. So David Wayne is the imposter hatter and Davy Jones is the reason Hatter. Really, this is going to stay in my head as the Batman '66 version of these three forever. Frank Gorshin, Anthony Perkins and Davy Jones. I think it'd be a great pairing to have seen on stage together. They all seem like great performers. I think art of The Mad Hatter snd Scarecrow modelled after Davy Jones and Anthony Perkins would be great, honestly.
But Davy Jones had to be the Mad Hatter. Short and British, he even sort of sounds like Peter Macnicol doing The Mad Hatter for the batman arkham games. And also, well, daydream believer sounds like a Mad Hatter song. Soft yet almost ethereal, it's perfect. A batman 66 episode with the mad hatter would have to have that song worked in somehow (even if we just have the hatter humming it).
Jervis has a lot of feelings. Johnathan wishes all of those feelings were fear.
Alice obviously doesn't know what she's talking about. Jervis is clearly a well adjusted, rational, stable individual! Not on the verge of a breakdown or anything! Not upset that she doesn't share his love of escapism or anything! Not thinking about using his technology for selfish purposes or ANYTHING!!
Don't you hate it when your childhood best friend who was arrested for larceny and murder, yet claims that he's "No longer mentally ill" despite his insatiable need to cosplay a minor character from a children's book written 160 years ago, kidnaps you for an elaborate larp experience, which may or may not include the violent execution of your city's vigilante?
...on that note, anyone wanna hear the Mad Hatter lore from my batman au??
Woe, Jervis be upon ye!

Please let me have this. The concept of Jervis is so good even though his comics arenâtâŚgreatâŚ..and writing a Wonderland-loving weirdo as a Wonderland-loving weirdo just sounds fun. So, I guess youâd call this myâŚ

Jervis Tetch- or, the Mad Hatter- was a once respected neurologist turned criminal. Unassuming at face value, he creates chaos through his backwards intelligence and hypnotism, molding Gotham to fit his vision of âhomeâ.
⢠âââ â˘
Jervis was a neurologist, studying the subconscious. He was lonely, with few friends as a result of his social anxiety and awkwardness, but otherwise lived an average life.
This loneliness would bubble up into desperation, driving him to begin his criminal career before he would dawn his alter ego- the result of an unreciprocated crush on his coworker. Heâd inconspicuously use hypnotism to make strangers steal gifts to impress her with, the small scale and lack of traceability leaving Jervis guiltless. But eventually his crush would catch on, refusing his gifts and eventually demanding he never talk to her again. In a panic, he would hypnotize a group of bystanders into stealing a large sum of money, which accidentally lead Batman straight to him. Batman would find Tetch begging for the woman to willingly leave Gotham with him, promising anything she wants with the stolen money.
His intelligence and fondness for mind control would land Tetch in Arkham Asylum, which was more than a shock to him. Of course he knew he was risking jail time, but Arkham?? He didnât think anything he was doing was THAT bad! But now, he was sitting next door to some of the Gothamâs worst villains, amongst their ranks! He could never live a normal life againâŚ. He didnât want linger on those thoughts, escaping through one of the few distractions he had at his disposal- a copy of Aliceâs Adventures in Wonderland. He reread and escaped from the reality of the Asylum so often that it soon became his most important influence and, in addition to acclimating to his criminal status, resulted in the creation of his alter ego- the Mad Hatter.

Jervis is deceptively non-villainous- pleasant, soft-spoken, and chipper. He enjoys âhelpingâ others, and has moments of ditziness and anxiousness. If you had met him on the street unknowingly, youâd likely think he was just a well meaning eccentric with his head a little too far in the clouds. He does, however, have an awful temper, and is also quick to shift blame away from himself.
Many say he isnât ignorant to this perception, with debates whether or not he knowingly plays up his personality to manipulate others. Generally, the people who know his history donât typically respect him, but also donât put down their guard around him. After all, there is no arguing his use of hypnotism and mind control, and the wacky schemes that are difficult to crack because of the nonsense logic that only he finds sense in.
The Mad Hatter has two main goals:
Make Gotham into a Wonderland. Causing general chaos, really. What he means by this isnât clear (perhaps intentionally) as his schemes can be inconsistent. However, itâs usually with two underlying themes- regaining control, and not being alone.
To kill Batman. Ooooh he wants him dead. Jervis blames Batman for the loss of his old life, and sees this more that anything as a service to the people of Gotham, protecting the âinnocentâ from having their lives ruined as well.

âOh dear, another one lost. Another attempt failed. I try and I try, and thereâs nothing but loss.â
You could hear Jervisâ pitiful tone as you walked down the corridor, mumbled words, some unintelligible, some nonsensical, all of them coated in despair and sadness. It wasnât the first time heâd been caught, but it was the first time since youâd been under his employ, and as you made your way through the GCPD, you wondered if you could bear to do it again. He sounded so sad, so downtrodden. You were far more used to him excited and energetic, focused on his work and enthusiastically optimistic about his plans.
Now, as you approached the cell he was being held in, you braced yourself, aware that he would be sensitive, almost a different person, and you would have to be gentle, delicate when speaking to him.
And then you were there, turning a corner and seeing him, forlorn and sorrowful, sitting on the bench in the cell. Caught once more by Batman after another of his attempts to make him his Alice. You wondered why it was always him. Jervis had mentioned his reasons in passing, and youâd gleaned that it was something about his kindness. You imagined it was his care for the citizens of Gotham. After all, to Jervis, goodness was what Jervis cherished most in this world in other people.
As much as you enjoyed that about him, it had bothered you that he hadnât noticed that same kindness in you. Despite how much of it you offered to him. In fact, you reserved it for him most of the time. It was easy to care for him deeply, even easier to feel like you had to protect him, had to encourage him. He needed it so badly. And now, you were here to offer it to him again, in one of his lower moments.
Stepping into the cell with Jervis, you watched as the guard closed the door again after you, locking you in there with your duties. You approached Jervis slowly, feeling a pang in your heart as he looked to you, scared at first, the fear melting away when he realised it was only you. And then his eyes watered began to water again, and he cast them to the floor as you spoke.
âJervis, itâll be ok.â
Without looking up at you, he went into a small tantrum, his hands being thrown out to the side to punctuate his words, emphatic in his insistence that it would not be ok.
âYour words donât mean anything in the face of the evidence! It is not fine, it is not ok. It never is. Never. Not for me. Not for my work. Itâs not ok and itâs not going to be, either.â
Undeterred, aware that you were the one tenuous link to reality and optimism he had left, you continued, pushing past his hysterics and putting on the most comforting tone you could in the face of your own nerves.
âMaybe⌠maybe, Jervis, youâre just looking for the wrong thing⌠or the wrong person?â
âI can assure you that I am not.â
Heartbroken, you sat down next to him anyway, content to just be there for him. He was worth your kindness regardless.
In a move you were surprised by yourself, you put your arm around him, moving the other one to pull him into you until you were wrapped around his body, hugging him. The first hug youâd shared with him, the first physical affection between you both ever, in fact. And he was accepting it.
Not wanting to push things, or to overstep any boundaries in your professional relationship, you decided to end the embrace, standing up and smoothing down your shirt as you cleared your throat.
âI have to go⌠I need to speak to the lawyer now. But Iâll be back. And it will be ok, Jervis. You have to believe that.â
Despite sharing that moment with him, you could still feel your heart low in your chest, disappointed that the sweetness had been soured by his previous assertion that he did know the right person he was looking for. It saddened you, but you needed to stay strong, if only for him.
You were unaware, however, that Jervis was watching you go, eyes wide with wonder as his belief in you rose, and he realised that there was perhaps a chance that he was wrong after all. So he bid you farewell, quiet enough that you couldnât hear it, but unintentionally so.
âGoodbye, Alice.â
