College help post!

hi. i haven’t seen any of these floating around in a while so I thought i’d make one and try to help people. ‘cause there was a whole lot I didn’t know and it almost completely fucked me up! this is specifically for freshmen, since i’m only a sophomore. I’m gonna put generally important stuff at the top, and then go into more detail under a read more. ok, so here’s some advice from a very poor, white history major (and the two years experience my brother had before he dropped out) This isn’t perfect or all-inclusive, but it’s something

-College isn’t for everyone. don’t feel pressured to go if you don’t want to. there’s other options! i hate college

-don’t feel pressured to go to a big name school. sure, the clout might be nice but a college degree is a college degree

-i operate under the assumption that if a school wants me to pay to send in an application, then they’re not worth my time

-if you receive any sort of financial aid for going to high school (like free/reduced lunches) then you may be eligible to take the SAT and ACT for free! please ask your guidance counselor about this, it definitely saved me. also i think they can send college applications for free? i didn’t do that so i don’t remember

-do your fafsa as soon as possible. it opens October 1st, and the sooner you do it, the more money you’re likely to get –what’s fafsa? student financial aid from the government. Includes grants (which you don’t have to pay back) and loans (which you do pay back, but cheaper than other loan people)

-keep an eye on your bill. it’s sneaky and new charges might appear as the year gets closer to starting. also! while registering, keep an eye out for fees that don’t appear on your bill

-check your damn email everyday. better yet, sync notifications of new emails to your phone

-start using a schedule planner. even if you’ve never used one and think you’ll be fine, start using one. they have free apps!

-Know where the counseling office is. Know how to contact them. Every school is required to have them, and they’re free. they Will help you. Become friends with them, even

i want to make a neocities so bad but i dont know where to start :(( any advice? i love ur website!!

hiii! thank you im so happy you visited and liked it <3 so like 2 months ago i was in the same spot as you - no idea how to code, but the idea of a personal website thrilled me so much!

i basically spent a few weeks browsing sites on neocities, noting down what delighted me, what i would personally like to have on my own website, etc.

after that i searched furiously for coding tutorials and making a personal website (around this time i was also making a portfolio website, so i had a couple of links saved). here are some

pages github

w3schools! free html and css and lots of other language tutorials

https://sadgrl.online — a TON of resources 🌟

neocities learn page (HTML, CSS, JS, and lots more! + a cute interactive cat tutorial) 🍰

codetheweb - tutorials

codeacademy — free coding tutorials

freecodecamp — all free coding tutorials

a bunch of resources

i started with neocities' learn page, which has a really quick intro to HTML and CSS. after that, i bookmarked a ton of posts on sadgrl.online's website, because she's super big on neocities and has sooo many helpful beginner tutorials.

after that i basically got an HTML boilerplate from eggramen and just started going from there! you can just directly upload your website files to neocities (make sure your folders are constructed the same way!) once you have an account.

basically tldr: grab a boilerplate HTML template from anywhere, make a neocities account, and start fiddling with it right away! google everything you don't know or don't understand. good luck 💖⚙️

Hi. I don't know if this is out of line or anything and if you're uncomfortable with answering this ask then you should totally ignore me and all that but I was wondering if (seeing as you are hoh) you maybe had any advice or anything like that for writing a hoh character? (In general, but especially any knowledge about hearing aids would be greatly appreciated)

Sorry to bother

ok so im not sure what information i can give you on being hoh that you probably haven't already heard, BUT with hearing aids i can absolutely give you a couple tips!

when you first put them in in the morning, assuming you have hearing at all, there's a slight echo. that's your brain registering sounds through the hearing aids and through your normal ears. it fades after a few minutes but i've never seen that mentioned ever and i think it could be pretty cool to bring up in a story

hearing aids are not water proof. idk why you might need to know that but there you go

OH. when the wind hits your hearing aids it makes a goddawful sound like someone blowing into earbuds mics. even a slight breeze can do that and it's awful

idk if this is common but my hearing aids have a startup jingle so when you turn them on or take them out of the charging station they do a little ditty. i can try to upload a video later if you're curious

um. if you're writing the character really early on, having just gotten hearing aids, everyone talks about the wonder and awe that comes from hearing rain, birds, cats purring, whatever, but i haven't seen anyone mention the blisters you get in your ears? the little bastards aren't very comfortable, even if they are cool.

also the plastic little sports guard thing that helps keep the aids in your ears can chafe.

if your character has a mask or glasses, those are pretty tough to wear with hearing aids. my glasses keep nudging my aids off the top of my ears and making them fall out

last thing isn't a hearing aids thing, but it is a hoh thing- please don't feel like you have to make your character speak sign language. i only know the very very basics of asl, and as much as i appreciate people trying to learn it to talk to me, i really wish that wasn't viewed as a mandatory part of being hoh/deaf

in-browser multiplayer games

these are some games i like playing with my friends, feel free to leave additions in the replies =3 all of these games are accessible through a desktop/mobile browser, although i don’t know how many of them would work on mobile.

tough love arena: a super fun beta fighter! you can play rolling 1v1 matches in lobbies of up to 8 people

gartic phone: kinda like the game telephone, but for drawings instead!

skribbl.io / sketchful.io: pictionary! you can add your own prompts.

draw battle: kinda skribbl/sketchful but team versus team!

frantic fanfic: put in your own characters and work together to make fanfics! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

giddio: buncha board and table games!

tagpro: topdown tag game!

codenames: use teamwork and hints to guess your team’s code names!

town of salem: mafia type game– might be difficult to play nowadays

mafia.gg: ever played TOS or any mafia game? this is a simple text-based form of it! really fun for roleplaying within the game.

one night ultimate werewolf: another social deduction game!

spyfall: game works better in call- figure out who the spy among you is by asking questions about your special location!

pokemon showdown: make a poketeam and play matches!

tetr.io: online tetris! kinda functions like tetris99.

there are a LOT of cards against humanity clones, like pretend you’re xyzzy or picturecards… i haven’t tried a lot of them, so proceed with caution!

geoguessr / virtualvacation: guess locations of places- virtualvacation is like geoguessr, but with videos instead

literally most things that people write off as just ‘textures’ to use in graphics are stolen & unsourced material created by artists or photographers NOT meant to be used as elements in projects without royalty payments. you can say ‘it’s just random tumblr posts they don’t care’ but you wouldn’t want someone to take your work and edit into their work so they can be praised for their beautiful style and creativity even if they just post it on social media w/o profit, would you?? so maybe if you browse pinterest or google images for pictures without finding the original source, you’re using images that you’re not allowed to use without realizing it.

you see it on here a lot especially in (i won’t link anything but i’m sure you know what i mean) those album track ‘aesthetics’ posts, au ‘aesthetic’ posts (you see these less in kpop, but where people use non-royalty free images to kinda craft a visual au), and even just rather typical graphics that have a lot of ‘texture’ elements. and texture packs too!! that’s often where the problem starts; people just collect images (often literal art), compile them in a folder w/o sources, then insist no one can repost those images w/o crediting the person who compiled them. what???

SO may i suggest some of my fave places you can get FREE, ROYALTY-FREE elements that are totally legal to use

creativemarket has 6 free high-quality resources (textures, brushes, fonts, etc), different every week! wow awesome i check it every week

search ‘freebie’ on behance. awesome stuff!!! lots of v nice templates textures and fonts

mockup zone freebies

unsplash: tons of very nice free photographs, not shitty stock photos

pexels: same idea. + they have an adobe plugin so you can get photos without closing your editor damn nice

pixelsquid is a super cool free program (again w a ps plugin that i love) with lottts of super cool hq 3d elements!

as to not make this too long: spoongraphics, lostandtaken (textures galore), pixeden, freebiesbug.

Hi!! I love your art, and I was wondering if you have any advice for drawing things in perspective/foreshortening? I love how you draw your characters at different angles espec when they're doing an action, it just makes your art look so dynamic 😊

Hey, if you're wanting to make some changes to how you eat, remember- it's much easier, healthier, and more sustainable to ADD foods that make you feel good than it is to REMOVE foods.

If you feel like you don't drink enough non-sugary fluids, it makes more sense to try drinking more tea and sparkling water than it does to just avoid soda. You gotta add in the good (and remember, that the only value food has is how it makes YOU feel. Food is morally nuetral and should be enjoyed.)

Try:

Adding a handful of easy produce to lunch and dinner- baby carrots or cherry tomatoes, something 0 prep. And yes, you are allowed to dip it in dressing! (The fats can make it easier for your body to absorb the vitamins in the veggies)

Adding a cheese stick or yogurt to breakfast. The protein is good and can help you wake up faster.

Adding some roasted nuts to your afternoon snack. (ADD, not replace.) That variety and little protein boost will do you good!

Have a glass of tea, sparkling water, or juice each time you have food. Let's be honest- you aren't hydrated enough. Go buy yourself some Kool Aide mix if that'll make you drink more water! Really!

If you struggle with binge eating sugary foods and it makes you feel yuck when the sugar crash comes- eat 1 or 2 pieces of chocolate with lunch and dinner. Every day. Really. Make it not a big deal. Make it not special. Make it something you can expect, instead of crave. Let yourself enjoy it without guilt.

Remember- food is a gift. It should bring you joy, not stress. Trust your body. Enjoy the cookie. Drink something tasty.

Do you know what RSS means? I've seen that a lot webcomics have a RSS page but I've been never quite sure what it does.

Yeah! RSS stands for "really simple syndication" and it's a way to subscribe to webpages on your own all in one place instead of using social media accounts, it's super useful for keeping up with independent websites (which is why so many webcomics encourage using it) and social media posts on sites you don't use yourself. It seems a bit intimidating at first but it's really handy because you can completely customize your feed, and keep up with exactly the content you want without having to follow all your favorite creators across six different social medias whose algorithms hide their updates anyway. I'm a huge fan of the concept myself but I'm a fucking barbarian and still just have an enormous list of bookmarks I check manually whenever I think of it, BUT my Cool Blog Pal @unpretty talks about it fairly frequently and knows much more about how it works than I do! She has a very long and detailed post about it over here you can look into when you get a minute. https://unpretty.space/post/181035050748/hey-a-friend-of-mine-is-curious-about-rss-and-the

Screencap of op's Experian account that says he does not currently have a credit score. There is a cutesy little gas guage style dial chart that would plot his score and it doesn't even have a needle.

So, I have a big advice post to write, but until I have the spoons, I want to warn everyone now who has legally changed their first name:

Your credit score may be fucked up and you need to:

check *now* that all your financial institutions (credit cards, loans, etc) have your current legal name and update where necessary

check that all 3 credit bureaus, on their respective sites, not via a feed like Credit Karma (so, Trans Union, Equifax, Experian) are collecting that info correctly and generating the right score - you might need to monitor them for a few months if you made any changes in #1

I am about to apply for a mortgage and learned that as of 2 weeks ago:

Experian suddenly thinks I am 2 different people - Legal Name and Dead Name (none of whom have a score)

Equifax has reported my active 25 year old mortgage as closed and deleted one of my older credit cards, hurting my score by 30+ points

Credit scores influence everything from big home/car loans to insurance rates to job and housing applications.

And for whatever reason, the 3 bureaus that have the power to destroy your life are shockingly fragile when it comes to legally changing one's first name.

So, yeah. Once I get this mess cleaned up for myself, I have a big guide in the works if you find yourself in the same predicament. But with the mass trans migration out of oppressive states, odds are there are a lot of newly renamed people who are about to have a nasty shock when applying for new housing.

Take care, folks.

hey jsyk while hellofresh is dummy expensive and i wouldn’t reccomend it if you already know how to cook (if you’re a beginner like i was when i had it for 3 months, then it’s worth it), you should know that ALL OF THEIR RECIPES are free on their website and they all fuck hard

i will say that all the cooking instructions for veggies are pretty much the same (season with salt + pepper and roast on the top oven rack at 425F), but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

that being said, it also introduced me to methods i wasn’t at all expecting. i would have never thought to use cream cheese in my meat sauce, and now all my friends are constantly asking me to make my special rigatoni.

happy cheffin! :)

hello hello! if youre usamerican with federal college debt thats about to start needing to be repaid, you should make sure youve gone to check out the new SAVE income based repayment plan the biden administration recently passed. this plan allows you to pay a monthly deposit that’s calculated based on your income. a few things make this different from the existing income based plans, including that your monthly repayment could be as low as $0 per month. if you pay the calculated amount, no further interest is accrued for the month, and if you keep up with these payments (which again, if youre like me and you dont make a lot of money might be ZERO dollars per month) then all your remaining debt will be forgiven after 12-25 years depending on your specific loans. the program application is very easy but processing takes about a month, so nows the time to get it in before repayment begins in november.

tldr: the SAVE federal aid plan can have you paying $0/month with no accruing interest on your student loans towards a guaranteed debt forgiveness after 12-25 years and you can read more about it and apply for it here!

Sometimes I’m looking for something online - often “how to” articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decades’ worth of experience. I don’t want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesn’t understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I don’t know what search settings to put into Google to get this.

Hey, you are not an embarrassment for not knowing how to do certain household chores/basic self-care. They do not come naturally to us. A lot of it takes practice! Maybe you had a neglectful guardian. Maybe you had one that was very coddling and never thought to teach you. Maybe you haven't lived in a place where these things were available to you or needed. Doesn't matter. It's okay to not know and far more common than you might realise.

That said, this website provides very simple instructions on how to do everyday tasks such as making your bed, using a washing machine, cooking different foods, washing dishes, taking a shower, etc. All you have to do is use the search bar to find the task you're struggling with, and it'll come up with what you need + other related how-to's:)

If you're having trouble navigating it, let me provide you with some examples:

How to clean dishes by hand

How to make your bed (with visual demonstrations of each step!)

How to fold clothes (with visual demonstrations of each step!)

How to take a shower & dry yourself off (also provides ways to shave beards, armpits, legs and genitals)

How to shave legs, armpits, beards, pubic areas, etc. (a more in-depth guide)

How to mop the floor

How to sweep the floor

How to swallow pills

How to make small talk

How to make eye contact in different situations (or how to avoid it while still looking natural)

It's also perfectly okay if these don't help or aren't appealing to you. Unfortunately, nothing helps everyone.

Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost

Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!

It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.

I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?

How many relationships? How much writing?

You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.

IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.

Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!
