I love this because I often wonder what their dynamic really was before the crash. were they good friends? was it toxic and manipulative? has curly gone through the same treatment, but downplays it for himself because their relationship? did the abuse only start after? It can only be assumed what the dynamic mightve been based on Curly's response to Anya and the treatment he faced post crash. It's clear that Jimmy has this inherent need for power and enjoys reveling in it, even if it's stolen. but we know nothing of anyone's past other than Swanseas. it could've been a behavior that formed after working in the tulpar or he could've always been this way. maybe he repressed it in the beginning, luring Curly into a false sense of security, and it becoming an on-and-off thing. maybe Curly repressed any memories of Jimmy ever doing anything. Maybe he even told Anya that he'd do something to comfort her, knowing he couldn't; not only because they were "friends", but because he knew what would happen to him.
Either way, Curly is both the witness and victim as you said.

Curly isn’t just a “man protecting a man” from his actions, he’s an amazing juxtaposition of both victim and witness. There is an unspoken story of potential sexual abuse in the relationship between Curly and Jimmy told exclusively through the pill sequences. The choking and gasping as Curly is forced to have pill after pill shoved down his throat while Jimmy gets his own private high off of knowing the power he now holds over the ex-captain. Anya isn’t the only one being forced to take blame from her rapist, Curly experiences a similar experience as Jimmy contemplates cannibalising him, forcing his autonomy over Curly’s own and blaming him for making him do something Curly has no control over.

I hate hate HATE how people are complaining that Star Wars has "gone woke" because it always has been. Same goes for Star Trek. They've always advocated for equality and dismantling corruption. this is nothing new.
Sci-fi as a genre, as well as many other adventure/action films, are progressive/woke. This isn't new, those people just don't understand the messages unless it punches them in the face (aka has a minority, the worst possible thing imaginable)

it's bizarre to me how many people say to me "I would, but I don't want to take anything off-track" or something along those lines. I wish we were taught more about protests and revolts in school so people understand that they have a voice
Until I started passing as a cis man, I didn't realize how horribly I was treated compared to them. Yes, I struggle being trans, but my life has improved significantly in how I'm treated by those who assume I'm cisgender. I honestly feel privileged that I get to experience both ends of the spectrum because I'm able to share just how drastic the change is.
things that happened to me when i was a woman in STEM:
an advisor humiliated me in front of an entire lab group because of a call I made in his place when he wouldn't reply to my e-mails for months
he later delegated part of my master's thesis work to a 19-year old male undergrad without my approval
a male scientist at a NASA conference looked me up and down and asked when i was graduating and if i was open to a job at his company. right before inquiring what my ethnicity was because i "looked exotic"
a random male member of the public began talking over me and my female advisor, an oceanographer with a pHD and decades of experience, saying he knew more about oceanography than us
things that have happened to me since becoming a man in STEM:
being asked consistently for advice on projects despite being completely new to a position
male colleagues approaching me to drop candid information regarding our partners / higher ups that I was not privy to before
lenience toward my work in a way I haven't experienced before. incredible understanding when I need to take time off to care for my family.
conference rooms go silent when I start talking. no side chatter. I get a baseline level of attention and focus from people that's very unfamiliar and genuinely difficult for me to wrap my head around.
like. yes some PI's will still be assholes regardless of the gender of their subordinates but, I've lived this transition. misogyny in STEM is killing women's careers, and trans men can and do experience male privilege.
