What's The Difference Between 'enemies To Friends To Lovers' And 'rivalmance'?

What's the difference between 'enemies to friends to lovers' and 'rivalmance'?

First off, different writers will have different interpretations of certain tags/genres within fan fiction. This is my take on them:

Enemies to Friends to Lovers shows the progression of two people who start out hating each other, slowly grow closer and then fall in love. It’s a really common trope that you see in a lot of literature and film. One example: an assassin is sent to kill the protagonist, but the two of them get stuck having to work together towards a common goal, even though they don’t trust one another. Over time (usually through a couple “you saved my life when you could have run” encounters) the two of them become friends. They genuinely care for each other’s well-being and they have each other’s backs. Slowly, their feelings become romantic. The closer they become, the more their attraction grows. It may take them some time to admit to these feelings (usually held back by the fact that their circumstances should be pitting them against one another), but eventually they become lovers.

Rivalmance is a bit harder to pin down. A rivalmance could be something as tame as two people who are antagonistic and yet still love each other or something as extreme as two people who hate each other and yet have a sexual relationship. The fan fiction I’ve seen in this category more often than not sways toward the latter.

Rivalmance doesn’t usually have the same progression into kindness as Enemies to Friends to Lovers has. More often than not, the members of a rivalmance still genuinely dislike (and possibly hate) each other. Many times intimacy in a rivalmance is based upon mutual lust rather than love or tenderness. Hate sex is far more likely to show up here.

If we took the same story as above, the assassin and the protagonist still hate and distrust each other, yet there is an undeniable sexual tension between them. They are forced to work together, yet they do not build mutual trust. They may grow to care for each other’s well-being (as in, they wouldn’t want to see the other killed), but it’s more motivated by their circumstances than any real love or empathy. Their intimacy couldn’t really be mistaken for “making love”. Oftentimes there is a power struggle between the two of them throughout all of their interactions and sex is often no different. They are not particularly kind to one another, nor are they very giving unless they expect to receive something in return.

Thank you again! I'm so in love with this piece!

@alenkospanko 's Ulyesses Opries and my Sadira (ever changing last name) Benoit. They are witches, they are problem children, and they sometimes stop arguing with each other to be romantic idiots.

"We stick together and no matter what, have each other's backs. Through sickness and in health." They may have not been married, but he did take the vows and he would keep them.

"Careful Opries, you're starting to sound like a responsible and sound adult. Almost wise. How normal." His fingers were warm on her chin and his blue eyes were captivating. Her features softened, "I'm glad we have each other."

Commission from the wonderful and incredible @ib-gomes. They were so kind and patient and look! It's so beautiful, truly a million times better than I pictured! Thank you again so much!

I hate how there’s a fan culture where fan writing is seen as less valuable than fan art. Hold on with me here, I’ve got some coherent thoughts on this.

1. Creators of the original work one might be a fan of have explicitly said that they don’t look at or respond to anything written for fear of being sued. Like, shit. I don’t want to sue anyone. I want creators to tell me, “Oh, wow. You took my thing and made it amazing!” Fan art gets reblogged and commented on by creators because there’s no fear of law. Fan art gets more validation and praise than fan writing.

2. Popularity of fan writing increases when there is fan art dedicated to the piece. Fan art is popular no matter if fan writing is made from it.

3. In general, fan art is reblogged and liked more often than fan writing. Art is pretty and might occupy an “aesthetic” while writing is considered to clog up a dash with too many words.

4. Fan art is easy to engage with no matter the demographics of your audience. Writing will–at the very least–limit the age demographic. If you write for an older audience, younger folk might not be into it and vise versa.

5. And unless you’re super into supporting fan writing, you’ll probably not say anything about it. Fan art gets the bare minimum of “gorgeous.”

Writing Tip #8

Write every day. That’s right, every day. You may have heard this before, maybe you haven’t. It’s a lot easier to eliminate writer’s block and to get pages dished out in a day. If this seems daunting and you don’t believe you have the time, make time. In between work, or studying, or even before class (which is what I do), just start off with what you can get and then go from there.

Don’t worry about the quality of your writing, just write what you can. That’s what editing is for later. Keep at it until you are writing at least three paragraphs or more everyday. It should be easier to start when the time comes to just sit and start typing (or writing in a notebooks) for a whole hour or more.

I know not everyone wants to read the books, but I think more people should read this passage from the masked empire specifically. Especially those who are struggling to understand modern elves being oppressed and the evanuris having been oppressors.

Writing Tip #6

Have multiple copies of writing you really care about. You never know when you're going to have your laptop give out, or lose a flashdrive, or drop your notebook in water. This is another way handwriting it comes in handy. You automatically gain two copies: a physical one and a typed version. Even saving recent copies to an email draft is a good idea. (Or emailing them to yourself if you don't trust drafts)

Blood of Arlathan: Solas vs Elgar'nan

Blood Of Arlathan: Solas Vs Elgar'nan
Blood Of Arlathan: Solas Vs Elgar'nan

Solas and Elgar'nan's war of words is truly one of my favorite moments in the entire game. So, I thought I'd post a quick transcript for anyone who may be interested.

(I did my best with the translations, using the Dragon Age Wiki as a source.)

Part One

Solas: Elgar'nan! Lethallin! Ma banal'evanuris. Ma salin ar ghilana? Translation: Elgar'nan! Brother/Friend! You are not a god. Do you need a guide? (Do you need me to show you how?) Elgar'nan: Fen'Harel, you have no power here!

Part Two

Elgar'nan: So, the Dread Wolf has arrived to defend his pawn. Solas: Your cruelty forced my hand. Elgar'nan: A hundred generations, and still the same refrain. Solas: Again you have caged our people, and again, I will set them free. Elgar'nan: But you were always stubborn, Fen'Harel. Insubordinate. Unmanageable, even by Mythal's reckoning. Solas: You have lost the right to speak her name. Elgar'nan: Ma vallas ban! Shev gar, Fen'Harel! Translation: You cannot kill/defeat me! (You set (the setting sun) never!) Come, Fen'Harel!

Part Three

Solas: The only reason Mythal joined you was that she knew the monster you would become if left unchecked. She thought to temper your brutish ego. Instead, you betrayed her. Murdered her. Elgar'nan: (Chuckles) Only the first time, Dread Wolf.

Part Four

Solas: The cruelty is nothing new, but what has happened to the vaunted brilliant mind of Elgar'nan the mighty? The blight has left you blunt and slow, a monster, not a mastermind. You used to be a challenging opponent. Elgar'nan: You saw me as an opponent. To me, you were an irritation. A fly buzzing ceaselessly. Solas: I must speak to you in this tongue. It seems elven is beyond your grasp. Elgar'nan: As much as freedom is beyond yours.

Part Five

Solas: Once the blight is free, it will rule this world, and you will be its attack dog. You will burn this world at its command, as Andruil did at yours, and you will leave only ruin behind you. Elgar'nan: This world is ruined already! Your Veil destroyed it! Solas: You could heal it. You have the strength to repair the damage without using the blight! Elgar'nan: (Choked laughter) Save your games for the mortals, Dread Wolf. The blight is my blade, and it will take more than your tricks to get me to lay it down. Your whining comes from envy, Fen'Harel, but it does not have to be so. There is a place for you at my side in a new, glorious empire. Solas: But it will not have eluvians, will it? June built them, and now he is dead. Our great cities came from Sylaise. Our deepest mysteries from Dirthamen. Elgar'nan: I will restore it all. Their achievements will not be lost. Solas: You were a bully who ruled over what others had built, and now the others are gone. Who do you have left? Ghilan'nain? You cannot rebuild a world by stitching together monsters.

I envy writers.

As an artist I can give you a snapshot into a world.

But a writer.

A writer can take you there.

They can weave together words and create a portal to anywhere. You can visit those places instead of looking out a window and wishing to be a part of it.

I envy writers.
