Two Quick Thoughts.

Two Quick Thoughts.

First, this isn't a criticism, just something I would have liked to have seen. I get Athena, May, and Harry walking directly behind the coffin during the funeral procession, and Buck walking with the 118 behind them. I think that fits who Buck is and being part of the fire family. But what I would really have liked to see (other than eulogies) was Buck standing with Athena, May, and Harry at the final gravesite. The show has made a big deal, on more than one occasion, about Buck being Bobby's son. I think it would have been nice if he could have been there.

Second, does anyone know if they shot the funeral in a church or built the set themselves? I ask because I'm wondering if it is a coincidence that the scene above the casket is everyone gathered at the crucifixion of Jesus.

Two Quick Thoughts.

maybe it seems silly to people who consume media in a ‘normal’ way, but for some people this show has been a huge part of their lives since it first started. we love these characters. we’ve put so many hours and so much work into fanfics and art and edits because these characters matter to us. we see ourselves in them.

and it would have been one thing if we went into this show knowing characters would be killed off, but we’ve been told that wouldn’t happen. it’s next level cruel to take a show that we feel so safe with, and suddenly turn it into this. and in his interview it genuinely feels like tim is mocking the fans for believing what he told us about not killing mains.

idk. i’m angry and i’m sad.

Ok I need everyone to understand that Buck and Eddie are both products of their upbringing. Buck was a child of neglect, which led to him having abandonment issues. While Eddie was a child forced to grow up too fast, which led to him having hyper-independence. Two different kind of traumas. Two different kinds of trauma response. Which would require two different kinds of help.

Buck and Eddie help each other overcome these things and because they are two different kinds of problems, the way they help will ALSO be different. Ever since they met, Eddie has always been there for Buck (don't even fight me on this) and Buck has always given Eddie what he needs. It will look imbalanced, but it's really not. They both need SOMEONE in their lives, just in different ways.

Buck doesn't need someone to take over his lease, or to take care of his son, or to help him figure out childcare, he needs someone to Not Leave Him Alone. Eddie doesn't need someone to tell him he's not expendable, or to be reassured he's trustworthy, or to be promised he's not going to be abandoned, he needs someone to Give Him a Helping Hand. And the moment they became friends they have been those SOMEONES to each other.

They are each other's persons. Equally.

i would love to know what the people complaining about their acting choices would want them to do. like do you want them to stand there and announce every emotion they're going through at any moment? it's in the look back. it's in the slight twinge to their smiles. the awkward waving of the arms. the eyelashes fluttering. the nervous scratching. the writing choices. the confusion as the distance grows. it's all there and if you can't interpret that, it's on you

I went back and watched the Hen and Chim goodbye scene when Chim was leaving to find Maddie in s5 and the difference between that goodbye and the Buddie goodbye are making me insane.

Hen shows up after Chim is done packing the car up and offers to go with him.

They're both crying the whole time.

Hen is clearly sad to see Chim go, but is so supportive of him going. She isn't bringing any of her feelings about him leaving into it.

They hug goodbye without any awkward 'should we hug' moment.

Hen sadly watches Chim drive away, but there isn't a super long, lingering shot on her as she does.

Compared to the Buddie goodbye.

Buck helps Eddie pack up.

Buck finds Chris's favourite shirt that's he's been missing and tells Eddie to make sure Chris knows he found it (because he clearly doesn't want Chris to forget him either).

Eddie tells Buck he matters to him and he's going to miss him, but instead of getting tearful/emotional about it Buck still seems like he's trying to hide how he's feeling from Eddie.

Buck baked Eddie cookies to help him stay awake while he drives (because he saw how tired Eddie got after driving around all night looking for Maddie a few weeks prior).

The awkward little dance before they hug.

The way they both clung to each other during the hug and Buck buried his face in Eddie's neck was such a different vibe from the Chimney and Hen goodbye hug.

Buck tells him "You get out of here" when Eddie's leaving.

Eddie turns around to look at Buck as he's leaving, like the last look wasn't enough.

Eddie waving goodbye and looking at Buck in the mirror as he drove away.

Buck standing sadly in the middle of the street in the rain as Eddie drove away with the close up on his face felt tonally different than the Hen look while Chim drove away.

Their friendships have always felt different and been portrayed differently, not just in a 'they're different characters' way, but in a way that feels especially stark watching the goodbyes one right after the other. I don't have some grand observation, just that the vibes were so different even though they were both between two best friends saying goodbye for an indeterminate period of time.

911 season 8 episode 9 could alternatively be called “the buckley siblings being fucking crazy, but like, you kind of get it”
