i dunno if there’s a lookism fandom on tumblr but that one dude in charge of hostel 2.0? the awful human being??? olly wang (i had to look it up). yeah his backstory was sad, yeah his life sucked. i can sympathize with that
but i cannot take people literally saying like, aww poor dude, he just had a bunch of bad stuff happen to him,,,, so sadd,,, he deserved better :((((
like he was a kid, and the oppressive environment he grew up in etc was awful. no denying that.
HOWEVER he did so much bad shit. he weaponized children, and sold them!!! stop saying poor babby :(((( that genuinely upsets me. i know it’s just fiction, but it makes me so mad. Just because he had a rough life doesn’t mean he’s a poor babbbeyyy uwu. It doesn’t justify all of the truly awful shit he did.
i know this is really late and everything, and there might have been people who said this already, but i caught up after not reading it for a while and the top comments (that i just happened to see on webtoon when i read it) all said stuff like this and it upset me. I’m not attacking anyone, this is my opinion.
It’s my opinion that it’s possible to feel bad for all the stuff that happened in his childhood without downplaying all the bad stuff he did. It’s a complex narrative, we can have complex feelings about it. I don’t think it should be simplified down to, he had no other choice bc his childhood was so bad :((
Like i said, this isn’t attacking anyone. I know my words were harsh (this is a rant post lol and i wanted to get this off my chest), but i genuinely don’t mean to offend anyone, or downplay anyone’s feelings on this. i’m pretty sure no one was justifying his actions when they said this stuff, but i do think it downplays the awful things he did and oversimplifies the situation. these just my feelings toward the situation, and like i said, i wanted to get them off my chest

I joke a lot about one piece being bad but at it’s heart it is a story of love and freedom and revolution and it’s a pretty inexorable part of me.
what really surprised me is how tightly woven those threads are, even from the beginning. all the way back when alvida was the first villain, through the Big Punch-Em-Up Explosions that are happening in the new world, some (katakuri) better than others (doflamingo). the narrative sprawls and the individual arcs have shenanigans, and characterization can get kinda wobbly, but thematically (and maybe even meta plot-wise) it’s been solid since day one. and you can find fascinating comparisons between character arcs: robin and ace and their question about if they should have been born (can throw sanji in here too), nami and jimbei’s connections to fishmen, chopper and franky living up to dead father figures and embracing monstrosity in their humanity, luffy and everyone else–
it’s good. and it’s been good to think with. more important to me right now, it’s been good to hope with.

What do you think of the stereotype that all asians are smart?
It is very harmful due to the following reasons:
There is a lot of pressure within the Asian community for Asian children to do well academically and this stereotype just intensifies the need to do well outside of the Asian community.
If an Asian child is having difficulty at school then it is assumed they are being lazy. This needs to stop! Some Asian children have learning difficulties and instead of pinpointing the difficulties the Asian children are deemed as lazy because they are not living up to the “smart Asian” stereotype.
If there is a sudden drop in the academic performance/ attendance of an Asian child at school then people say “they don’t care anymore” when in reality it may be due to personal issues/ depression/ anxiety/ anorexia and many other mental issues.
If an Asian person does do well on an Exam, then their achievement is brushed off as “well you’re Asian so it’s normal”. This actually lowers self esteem and self worth, I can tell you this from personal experience.
Ultimately, the “Asian kids are smart” stereotype hinders society from viewing Asian children as capable of having disabilities; as capable of having a mental illnesses: as capable of being an individual person rather than some foolish stereotype.
It has a greater effect than some people think so think twice before you repeat it to another person.

“That was ONE time!”
“Due to an administrative error”, or any major plot point which is caused almost entirely by bureaucratic fuckups
“Contrary to popular belief” appended to something that’s either really obvious or completely subjective
A character makes an assertion, then cut to the narrator contradicting it (‘“Everything’s fine!” Everything was not fine.’)
First-person narrators who call a specific character by a series of increasingly convoluted nicknames
Unusual narrative euphemisms. I still hold that describing around a curse word is almost always funnier than just using the word.
Establishing character moments which subvert your expectations right from the get-go. The best example is in the Brooklyn Nine Nine pilot, where Jake’s fooling around at the crime scene before revealing that he’s already solved the case.
Montages. Just montages of any kind, for any reason, anytime. I actually think they work better in text form because you can do so many creative things with them.
Side characters with a level of fourth-wall awareness / quasi-supernatural ability which is never quite certain, like the janitor in Scrubs.
Double meanings in narration that take a while to make themselves clear.
Really, really specific similes.

Hey all! This poem is part of my chapbook Miss Translated, which I produced in a limited run as Town Hall Seattle’s Spring 2017 artist-in-residence. The main conceit behind this work is that to accurately portray my relationship with Spanish, I have to explore the pain and ambiguity of not speaking the language of my grandparents and ancestors. As a result, these poems are bilingual … sort of. Each one is translated into English incorrectly.
The poems I produced have secrets, horrific twists, emotional rants, and confessions hiding in the Spanish. It’s my hope that people can appreciate them regardless of their level of Spanish proficiency.
