Plot twist: The alpha on the fifth day was Jung-bae and he’s the father.
“Okay,” Jung-bae said gently. “Just calm down. You can’t smoke to calm down anymore, so try deep breathing or… count to ten or whatever pregnant people do.”
“I’m going to be the talk of my ex-wife’s garden club until I die,” Gi-hun moaned, collapsing onto the couch.
“Come on, buddy,” Jung-bae said, patting his shoulder. “No use spiraling. Let’s just figure this out logically, yeah? Start by mapping them out.” He went to a corkboard covered in tickets and various photographs and took them down stacking them neatly before producing sticky notes and tacks as if they were detectives. “You said four alphas, some you know, some you don’t—five days, four mistakes. Let’s go in order. Who was first?”
Gi-hun scratched his cheek. “Sang-woo,” He muttered. Then, because of course it needed clarification, “Cho Sang-woo.”
Jung-bae froze mid-tack, his eyebrows crawling up into his hairline. “Cho Sang-woo? The Cho Sang-woo? The pride of Ssangmun-dong? That Cho Sang-woo?”
Gi-hun raised an eyebrow. “What, is there another one?”
Jung-bae shook his head slowly, like he could not believe what he was writing as he scribbled the name down. The tack made a particularly judgmental squeak as he pinned it to the board. “I’m just surprised. I know you two were like childhood sweethearts or whatever, but from the few times we’ve gone out for drinks I’ve seen him smile exactly once, and it looked like it hurt him physically.” He glanced over. “So, when you two finished, did he give you a performance review or…?”
He ducked just in time to dodge the flying shoe.
“If anyone should be questioning the decision,” Gi-hun said, “It’s Sang-woo! He could have far more suitable omegas. Goodness knows his mother only talks about it every time I come by her stall. ‘My Sang-woo is the most eligible bachelor—handsome and rich!’”
“He could,” Jung-bae agreed instantly.
The other shoe flew through the air.
“Okay! Okay! Moving on!” Jung-bae yelped, scribbling like his life depended on it. “Second alpha?”
“In-ho,” Gi-hun said, arms crossed tight. “Hwang In-ho.”
Jung-bae nodded, writing it down. “Someone we don’t know. Progress. Got an age? Occupation?”
“Forty-five. Two years younger than me. He’s a cop.”
Jung-bae stopped mid-letter. “You slept with a cop? What if it was a sting? What if he thought you were—”
“I’m not a criminal!” Gi-hun snapped. “The only arrest on my record was from—” He stopped himself, mouth shutting with a click.
Jung-bae raised one slow, unimpressed eyebrow.
“It wasn’t for prostitution, I’ll tell you that,” Gi-hun muttered, waving him off.
“Alright, alright,” Jung-bae said, sticking it to the board. “Third alpha?”
“I don’t know his name,” Gi-hun mumbled, suddenly very interested in a frayed thread on the couch cushion.
The pen dropped.
“You don’t know—?”
“But!” Gi-hun sprang up and grabbed the pen and one of the sticky notes. “I can draw his face.”
Moments later, he stepped back to reveal a truly tragic sketch: a face with massive round eyes, cartoonish lips and parted dark hair.
Jung-bae stared at it. Blinked. “Great. We’ll print these out. Tape them to lampposts. Wanted: Alpha Baby Daddy. Likes long walks and kissing with these lips apparently—”
“Shut up!” Gi-hun threw himself back onto the couch.
“Last one?”
Gi-hun sighed. “Jun-ho.”
“Okay, cool—”
“Hwang Jun-ho.”
Jung-bae looked up sharply. “That’s… that’s a funny coincidence.”
Gi-hun did not look at him. “It’s uh. Not a coincidence. That’s In-ho’s little brother.”
Silence.
Jung-bae stared at the cork board. Then at Gi-hun. Then at the cork board again, like it might rearrange itself into something more reasonable.
“...You slept with two brothers. Two. Brothers.”
Gi-hun covered his face with a pillow and screamed into it. Then he pulled it away and moaned in despair,”I didn’t know that until after the fact I swear!”
OR: Omega Gi-hun spends a particularly nasty heat with four different alphas, Sang-woo, In-ho, Jun-ho, and the Salesman, and gets pregnant and then has to find out who the father is.

I like how Jun-ho is one of the most traumatized characters in squid game and no one talks about it. Like yeah, he lost his brother, sneaked in the island searching for him, killed 2 men, watched the guards perform illegal surgeries on the bodies to harvest organs (he thought they had his brother there too and that he died at some point), watched some of the games, almost got sexualy assaulted and then he found his brother alive, running the games, only to be shot by him off of a cliff (bonus points because his brother gave him his kidney to keep him alive)
What a character.
This is seriously very heartbreaking
And in this season he is trying his best to exhaust every lead
Not his fault that the captain Mr. Park is sabotaging his plans

Thanks to this "irrelevant character" and his investigation we know more about the pink guards, the games behind the scenes, the VIPS and the frontman's identity. He almost took down the games ALONE in s1 and he's the only weakness of his brother, the main villain.
Just silly things.
According to certain squid game fans, you are an important and "useful" character only if you are a player in the stupid ass games, it seems. Watch properly the series, guys.

I adore merpeople AUs too, and I'm thrilled you're enjoying this one! I can’t get enough of imagining Gi-hun with his striking red hair and a deep green tail—like the same shade as the Squid Game tracksuits, which feels so poetically fitting. And oh wow, I hadn’t thought of In-ho as a Prince Eric parallel until you mentioned it, but now I can’t unsee it and I’m obsessed. It fits him so well!
Poor Gi-hun, truly. In my headcanon, he’s the child of two merfolk himself but was abandoned young—left near the ocean floor to fend for himself, hunt, survive. So like you said, he knows nothing about raising a child, specially not one with a human parent, which is completely unheard of in mer society. I imagine Gi-hun was genuinely heartbroken to leave the baby with In-ho—he just didn’t know he had a choice. No one taught him otherwise.
Because the baby is half-mer, he can breathe underwater, but Gi-hun, being used to the way merchildren are, handles him with a kind of reckless affection that would horrify a human parent. Merbabies develop fast and are tough, so Gi-hun will just casually drop him in the water or even toss him in the air and bop him gently with his tail like a dolphin playing with a ball. The baby’s completely fine (maybe even giggles), because in mer culture, that’s considered normal caregiving—for the two whole days they do keep their kids 😅
Looking ahead, I love the idea of Gi-hun eventually finding a way to gain legs so he can be with his baby and his eventual husband-slash-co-parent-slash-accidental soulmate. And once he learns how to really care for a child, he takes to it like he was made for it. He adores that baby with his whole heart—and mourns, quietly, that he never knew love like that himself. But he’s so grateful to In-ho and Jun-ho for showing him that there’s another way.
Thank you again for letting me ramble—it means the world! I’m definitely going to keep building this story out. I’ve got so many ideas!

I need someone to rant to about a potential story idea for In-ho x Gi-hun inspired by fanart on Pinterest, which I have included below, so I hope you do not mind. To begin, In-ho and Jun-ho live on an island and work as police officers but do a lot of fishing together in their spare time. One time while out, they witness another fisherman heartlessly throw a kitten in a sack into the water, and when they go to rescue it and plan on going after the fisherman, a massive green tail emerges from the sack with the kitten in it, and they think it is a big fish trying to eat it, so they net it and drag it in with the sack. Only to find it is what appears to be a merman with bright red hair who takes the kitten and resuscitates it and tries to keep it away from the brothers, thinking they were planning on harming it too.
This merman cannot speak but does understand human language, having watched them from afar for so long, so they communicate and eventually become friends. In-ho names the merman Gi-hun since his actual name is a series of unreplicable screeches. Well, In-ho, Jun-ho, and Gi-hun develop a deep friendship, though In-ho and Jun-ho only get to see GI-hun a couple of months of the year since he moves based on the seasons. Well, eventually Gi-hun and In-ho catch feelings for one another, and one thing leads to another, in a cave specifically, but Gi-hun has to leave for the winter afterward. But In-ho waits patiently for him to come back.
Gi-hun comes back months later with In-ho and Jun-ho waiting for him eagerly; only he has a basket he obviously scavenged from the water, and in it, a newborn baby with human legs and dark hair. Of course, In-ho, who had no idea mermen could carry, nearly faints into the water while Jun-ho loses his mind. “You fucked a merman???” When both finally calm down and turn back to the water, they find Gi-hun gone.
Turns out merpeople are absentee parents, so they mate with other merpeople or humans and then dump their offspring on them, thinking it is like a gift. Well, next time In-ho sees Gi-hun, he patiently explains how humans are expected to raise their children together and not just dump them on one another 😂😂😂 So they learn to co-parent their half human half merperson baby with Uncle Jun-ho.
Sorry for the rant but as soon as I saw the fanart below this whole story came to me. I obviously want to finish other things first but what do you think?

i absolutely love the story!! it has a lot of potential going forward since u can expand on the fact that gihun, due to merpeople being absentee parents, would have no idea how to raise a child. nor would he have any idea on how to raise a child with humans.
since the baby is half-merperson, im assuming it can breathe underwater but imagine inho and junho's shock when gihun grabs their tiny baby and just dunks it into the water 😭

Then suddenly he lifted Junho into his arms and made a dance move while singing - "Flyyy me to the moon.. and let me play among the stars..." - Inho was singing playfully to Junho, he was singing as if he was in an orchestra concert.
"Hahaha!! Hyung!! You're funny!!", Junho was giggling so much looking at his brother's behavior. Inho was smiling to Junho and continued to sing and dance with little Junho in his arms, nothing made him happier than seeing his little brother laughing with happiness.

I always wonder why Inho likes listening to "Fly Me To The Moon" so much. I first thought maybe because the song reminds him of his dead-wife (the song about people who are in love). But I remember that the song was first playing when Inho was trembling to the core while halucinating Junho after he shot Junho on the cliff. So.. I think the song reminds him of his baby brother. Maybe he used to listen to "Fly Me To The Moon" while he was playing some games with Junho when Junho was still a kid 🥺🥺 And now in the island, he listens to the song when he misses Junho, his baby brother.
Oh I can just imagine the confrontation if/when they find Gihun and Gihun trying to push them away because he’s so convinced that outside of the games he’s absolutely worthless + he doesn’t want any of them to get hurt because then it’ll add to the already mountain of guilt he carries. And Sangwoo trying to get Gihun to realize that he’s worth everything to him but Inho’s gotten so into his head that he can’t believe it. Overall very angsty
For the AU where Ilnam takes Gihun off the game to keep him as a pet... I don't really have the words for this right now but please just imagine Sangwoo's POV for a second when he hears "player 456 eliminated" and how fucked up he'd be for the rest of the games and then getting out and going to check on Gihun's mom only to find her dead and he'd never even know what happened to Gihun (unless..?) aaaaaaa
(Unless he somehow also comes across the Salesman later on and actually has a semi convo with him where Salesman lets something slip that makes it sound like he knows Gihun and is talking about him in present tense. Nothing super obvious but something Sangwoo notices and puts together idk.. And then Sangwoo investigates?? Tries to infiltrate the games in his own way? (So imagine in a more VIP/insider sort of way) Maybe Saebyeok learns about this and also wants to help? Maybe they bump into Junho along the way and the whole merc Kim and co plot still happens but Saebyeok is on the water with Junho while Sangwoo is on the island confronting the Frontman and looking for Gihun)
(Nothing super dark/darker than canon is happening with Inho/Gihun in this AU so like I imagine he's not exactly kept there against his will.. Maybe at first, but then it's more that at some point he learned about his mother's death, and Sangwoo and Saebyeok got what they needed, and even with them being alive he's still traumatized from the games and Ilnam's betrayal and basically having to gamble with people's lives. They offered him enough money to pay off his debts and start over but he feels like he has nothing left to live for out there, like he wouldn't be able to talk to Gayeong and like Sangwoo wouldn't want anything to do with him especially after what they went through, so he just sort of... stays, and tries to convince Inho to stop the games, and when that doesn't work tries to at least keep changing them to give people the most chances of survival. Like the keeping the money change, or like a new change where people who vote to leave get to just leave and only those who choose to stay keep playing. No more 'special game' at nighttime.
And he's miserable but he really feels like he wouldn't know what to do with himself out in the real world, and he doesn't want to bring down his friends with him, so maybe it's better if he stays "dead". And meanwhile Inho is just trying to win him over and convince him that they belong together, that he can make him happy if he stays with him forever.)

gihun is so traumatized and insecure about his place in people's lives that he just remains in the island. gayeong is being taken to america, sangwoo will help gihun's mom he's sure, saebyeok has her life... in his head, he is of no use to anyone.
except inho. inho tells gihun that he is needed at the island. at inho's side. and also ilnam's but the old man isn't important here. inho can make him happy and fulfilled, can turn him from a man with no purpose into someone who betters the world by removing the trash from the streets. gihun is horrified by this of course, he won't be a willing participant in the murder of innocents.
so he tells inho that he needs to make changes to the games and gihun will stay. like you said, anon, the money being divided and the ones who want to leave being allowed out and the vote after each game.
unbeknowst to gihun, sangwoo and saebyeok and junho are trying to find the island.....
