Remus always knows...
James rambling about who he's falling for, and everyone thinks it's Lily until he slips up and says "he" and Regulus, who had been desperately ignoring it looks up at him. Just in time to see James go crimson and run away
"-just so fucking perfect, you know?"
James Potter's voice carried through the stacks of the library as Regulus paused, listening intently from his now-hiding space, staring at the words on his open book but not taking in a single syllable.
"I just...I feel like I'm invisible. Like no matter what I do, I'll never be worthy. Like, why is it the one person I fancy just thinks nothing of me, Moony? Like...just looks right through me?"
Regulus snorted a bit, unable to hear Remus Lupin's much quieter response. Of course Potter was still waxing poetic about Evans. of course he couldn't let her go. Of course.
"I know, but I just- there's nobody more amazing! So...smart, and...and gorgeous!"
More murmuring, then some shuffling as Potter and Lupin sat at a table nearby, now within Regulus's line of sight. He stared more intensely at his book, still listening closely.
"No, I...Moony, it's not just a crush. I can't even describe how I feel. Like, whenever we look at each other...I'm just...I just feel better, you know? Like I'm like light or something. It's so stupid and cheesy, I know, but I just..."
Potter's voice trailed off and Regulus chanced a glance up to see the taller boy also looking at him. Feeling himself go red all over, he quickly looked back at his book, feigning indifference.
But then Potter continued, his voice airy and distracted, as if he was almost drunk.
"Merlin, he's just so beautiful."
And at that, Regulus' couldn't help but glance's eyes snapped back up to meet James's. Because the words seemed to come from James's mouth quite without his permission. And both of them seemed to realize at the same time that James had said 'he.'
And then, before Regulus could react, James turned bright red and stuttered something about Quidditch practice before running off, leaving Regulus to stare incredulously at Remus.
"....Well. He's clearly not talking about Lily," Remus grinned, smirking at Regulus and walking away.
Omg this was such a good idea thank you for letting me write it! Keep sending ideas guys! Love you all!
It's currently 3 am here, I'm sitting on my bed, currently questioning my existence, wondering what on earth did that author sprinkled on their fanfiction to turn it into such masterpiece. I don't think I can ever recover from what I've just finished reading a moment ago. Holy shit, some Ao3 writers are just batshit insane. What the fuck do they eat in order to come up with a storyline like this??!!
That fic was just mind blowing, and now it's haunting me ugh. And the worst part is it's not even canon compliant but I don't give a fuck. I'll never be the same about gothic appetite and I will never look at Edgar Allen Poe's "Annabelle Lee" poem the same way ever again.
And yeah, I love Regulus Arcturus Black. Sorry if I ever badmouthed u bae 🙏🙏
I WANNA SCREAM IN PAIN AGONY AND DESPAIR NOW THAT IT'S ENDED WHY WHY WHY SHKFJKSHKSJSSHJJ-
Honestly I wish we got more of his character in the books because I wanna know what truly got him questioning Voldemort's wrongdoings AFTER he decided to join the death eaters. Because in canon, it says that by 1979 he began to have doubts about his own motives. Since we know that Sirius was clearly the rebel kid who stood against every pureblood ideologies, and Regulus clearly used to uphold every single pureblood traditions unlike Sirius, gives away the fact that he was indeed a blood supremacist. But what was his turning point actually? If we see it from third person's pov, he joined the DE 2 years after Sirius's departure. Means that he didn't do it out of spite to annoy Sirius, but because Regulus and his parents agreed with Voldemort in a lot of things. I wonder why Walburga and Orion didn't join DE, probably because they had an impression to uphold in the pureblood elite society, to control things in a neutral way/ more like fairplay so that if things went south, they'd be able to handle it. So Regulus volunteered instead.
But here's the thing, Regulus was clearly young and he was indoctrinated by his family to believe their ideologies, which is why he joined the DE in the first place, but you don't join Voldemort without knowing about the fact that he had tortured countless amount of muggleborns and set their colonies on fire to obtain the power he has now. News of Voldemort terrorizing the public were all over Daily Prophet. The black family clearly knew all of it and still went with it. But what convinced Regulus to betray Voldemort like that? He clearly knew what he was getting into, but in order to start questioning your own morals after years of indoctrination, there has to be a turning point. It's said that he was not ready to face the truth of being a death eater, does that mean Voldemort was asking for more from the Blacks which convinced Regulus to betray him? We do see that kreacher getting sent in that cave and returning bruised was Regulus's final turning point. Canon seems to indicate that Regulus cared a lot for his family, and he betrayed Voldy to protect them all.
I wonder if Sirius had something to do with all this. Even though as op mentions that Sirius interpreted Regulus's betrayal as something Regulus did out of the love he had for kreacher. But I think there's more to that. Maybe according to him, he and Regulus weren't close as brothers. Which is very clear. But I think to Regulus it was a whole another topic.
I also saw another post where they said that Regulus probably joined Voldemort to collect information about him on how to defeat him, which is why he collected all those articles about Voldy, indicating that harry potter is an unreliable narrator. Which can be true given some moments. But that makes everything so much more complex. If you ask me to give my honest opinion, I'd disagree with it. It seems quite unlikely, given the way his personality was. He probably joined the DE to protect his family for many unknown reasons we will never know. But I don't think Sirius's departure made him think twice about his beliefs. Yes, he came to his realizations, but it's quite clear that he questioned his beliefs only after a long time while being a death eater. For many reasons, I'll talk about it later. But what do y'all think?
p.s- please excuse my grammatical errors ehe I'm not a native speaker.
ngl, if you believe that Regulus's true beliefs are unknown as the only piece of canon information we have on that front is from Sirius, which could be biased because of the animosity between them...I don't think you can say Regulus took revenge on Voldemort for Kreacher because we learn that from Kreacher himself, an elf that literally worships him. So for all we know, Regulus could've been a blood supremacist/voldy fan, could've been not, could've loved his elf, or could've seen them as inferior beings and only betrayed Voldemort simply because he knew Voldemort needed to be stopped.
...im not saying anything, im on the side that he loves his elf, but I was arguing with someone about Regulus as a character and they told me what's mentioned above. That Sirius's dialogues on him aren't reliable for that reason and that Regulus defected when his elf got hurt.
So it's just...idk man.
So to sum it up, Regulus Black was indeed a Blood Supremacist but at the end, he realized his mistake and tried to make amends for it but somehow failed miserably. The purpose of fanon is to remind us that he did try to change. That he was ready to ditch his old beliefs for a new path. And the purpose of canon is to remind us constantly that he's a blood supremacist first who was groomed to worship pureblood ideals. Sirius realized it a long time ago but Regulus didn't. Not because he was just a coward, but also because he refused to believe that he was groomed. Both of them are true and it's quite sad.
Also, of course we care about canon. We've always had. Consciously or unconsciously.
"Villain and Violent, Infant and Innocent" is Regulus Black. He was juat a kid, a very impressionable kid who just wanted his parents to be proud of him, and at the end of the day, that's what we all want right?

Pt. 3 to Rockstar Regulus head canon
When they were younger, Sirius and Regulus took singing lessons.
Sirius was always better. He had this natural talent that Regulus could never keep up with.
How was he supposed to know what note comes after another just by ear? It didn’t matter how many times Regulus would repeat after Sirius, he just couldn’t get the notes.
It wasn’t just the music but their voices themselves. Sirius’ voice was like an angel. It was like an audial caress.
It had a fine, polished texture. Sirius could just throw out notes and they would be perfect. He would walk out of the room at the end like he didn’t just make Regulus feel like dirt.
He didn’t understand. He could play the violin proficiently. All the notes made sense on the piano. But his voice was an instrument he could never conquer.
By the time Sirius left for Hogwarts, Regulus was ready to give up singing, but of course he still had to attend lessons.
Sirius always liked his voice. When he came home from school that first summer he told Regulus that his voice was perfect for rock.
Regulus didn’t understand at first. How was saying his voice sounded like rocks a compliment?
That’s when Sirius showed him a the records he borrowed from his friend named Remus (his name was Regulus, who was he to judge?). Sirius locked them up in his room, put up silencing charms, and made the record float in the air and start spinning, somehow producing music. Regulus was shocked how well Sirius took to magic. It was nothing to him.
The voices were… strange. They didn’t sound beautiful like Sirius’, but Regulus found him wanting to hear every word.
When they’d gone through each record, Regulus was still confused. He didn’t sound anything like those voices.
Sirius looked at him like he’d just asked him what quidditch was. He took Regulus by the shoulder, looked him straight in the eyes and said, “Regulus, none of the voices sound like each other! They’re not supposed to sound like chorus’ where every voice is a part of the whole. They don’t blend in; the way your voice doesn’t. You’re voice is perfect because it isn’t perfect. It’s unique!”
Regulus sang more and more as his relationship with his brother slowly dwindled. Singing was an experience him and Sirius shared. If he sang, Sirius would surely be listening.
He trained his ear and spent hours slaving over a piano, just matching pitch. He wrote, and he composed, and he sang to distract himself from the life he was leading. To forget that Sirius wasn’t there anymore. Sirius didn’t want him.
His voice never changed its sound. It got deeper, but that only seemed to boost the effect.
He would be known by millions for his rough music with sharp lyrics coming from a coarse, grimy voice. People could never get his sound out of their head, they always wanted to hear every word coming out of his mouth.
When Sirius first heard Regulus’ voice on the radio, he was mesmerized. He hadn’t heard him sing in years. He was so proud of what his brother had accomplished.
Regulus would’ve given up on everything if he didn’t have his writing, but he would’ve given up on his passion if he didn’t have his brother.
Regulus black and tattoos (sad regulus times)
I think that if Regulus ran away from the death eaters he would keep the mark for a very long time. He wanted to remind himself that he isn’t a good person now just because he no longer hurts people.
He would stare at it for hours and remember all the damage he’s done, all the people he killed, all the families he’s ruined, all the torture he witnessed with a straight face. Then, once the guilt has reached its peak, he gets up and he does anything to help. He would leak information to Dumbledore about the death eaters, he would clean up demolished buildings after an attack, obliviate any muggles who saw, anything to make that guilt worth something.
When the war ends (just pretend it ended for normal reasons, not because of Lily, and they’re all fine) he finally covers it up (in a muggle shop of course). He replaces the mark with a bouquet of flowers. Mainly made up of lavender and amaranths. He’s never really been fond of flowers but he needed life to cover up the symbol of death.
He would lay these flowers over the graves of the victims. He wanted them to find peace, to have immortality in the afterlife to counteract the short life they lived. Both death eaters and muggle-borns. Some he knew, many he didn’t.
This was where Sirius found him. Kneeling over Marlene’s grave(sorry I needed a reason for him to be here), he points his wand to Regulus’ head, ready to kill his last death eater. Regulus doesn’t look up and says, “Don’t kill me yet, I haven’t finished.” Sirius realizes he was organizing the bouquet of flowers to decorate the grave, he looked around and saw half the graves covered in purple and pink flower arrangements.
Sirius helps him finish. He asks Regulus what happened to him, the last thing Sirius knew was that he had died. Regulus tells him everything, not looking for forgiveness, just wanting to answer the question. They walk to Sirius and Remus’ flat together. They part ways a few blocks away, Sirius not giving Regulus his address, even though Voldemort has been dead for months. They decide to not see each other again, both knowing their lives would only get worse if the other was in it.
Regulus gets his next tattoo that night. He gets the black crest, but instead of a crow in the center, there’s a big, shaggy black dog. (You think he DIDN’T know they were anamagi, come on.)
From then on it was like something broke free. He got tattoos covering his entire body, not wanting to feel so empty. He figures that if he can tattoo the things he used to love on his body, keep them on him at all times, then maybe he can love them again.
Pt. 2 to my rockstar regulus hc
Sirius and the rest of the marauders start spreading rumors or telling really embarrassing stories of Regulus when he was younger.
They would tell anyone they met about Regulus being able to catch a pigeon with his bare hands and doing it on several occasions. How he once bodied a stranger after they said his earrings were gay. How he set a trash can on fire. How he’s actually bald and just wears a wig all the time.
Sirius even found a way to get an interview for a magazine as an “Account on the newest star Regulus Black from his very own brother”. He said the most insane things but with so much conviction they all believed him.
Things got so out of hand that when Reg was in the middle of an interview the interviewer asks, “it is true you were once so in love with your brothers best friend, you sent him a love letter a day for a month?”
Reg just sits there for a minute, fazed by this super random question. Then he looks directly into the camera and goes, “Sirius I’m gonna cut all your hair off” and walks out.
Sirius cackled when he saw it.
If you think of Regulus like that then that’s fine. No one is telling you you can’t. Some people just think of Regulus differently because we have so little to work with that we can interpret them in different ways.
I personally think that Regulus was emotionally manipulated and abused by his parents, some people think he was put on a pedestal by his parents.
That’s what’s so fun about these characters: there isn’t really a right or wrong. Don’t get mad at people who want to make Regulus more than a plot device, I assure you we can all exist peacefully with different opinions.
Honestly, the real reason why I love/really like Regulus Black is because I WANT him to be this super badass, dark, snarky, sexy, mysterious asshole who doesn’t give a fuck about anyone. Sure, I’ll hate him as a person but I’ll love him as a character. I usually love the villains way more than the heroes, like, I find myself wanting grey characters to be more evil.
Sadly, his fans have made it REALLY hard for me to like him, they turn him into this poor, abused sweetheart who was secretly in love with James and was blackmailed into being a death eater and was an angel who did nothing wrong, like, NO! Stop ruining it for me, when I read about him and he appeared for, like, 10 seconds or something, I thought his character had potential, specifically in fanfics, but his fans make me wanna scratch my eyes out. Like, stop making him a poor little white boy, make dark headcanons about him, make him more complicated and interesting. His fans are just extremely annoying, and it REALLY pisses me off when they say “Regulus Black is the TRUE Slytherin hero”. Like... wtf?? What Regulus did was extremely heroic and god bless him for doing that, but... y’all gotta stop comparing the most complicated Harry Potter character ever to a plot device.
Wait they’re right! Remember when Regulus Black defected Lord Voldemort and fought against him for years and was a spy for nearly two decades and sacrificed his entire life in the process and truly believed in the Order’s cause and saved the entire Wizarding World?
Me neither, that was Severus Snape. Read the fucking books.
It annoys me how they compare the most beautifully-written character ever to a fucking cardboard cutout 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Tw: anxiety attacks (mentioned)
Regulus had really shit grades for the first few years at hogwarts.
He was really stiff and never got the wand motions right. He got anxious during tests and blanked. He was really bad at chopping things and ended up nicking his fingers during potions (which was never good with the whole hemophilia thing), he was taught to never get dirty (man’s always had hand sanitizer) so he hated herbology. He was always good at flying lessons and astronomy though.
He never asked questions or for extra help because he was scared people would think he was dumb.
He was also dealing with Sirius not talking to him anymore no matter how many times he tried to get his attention.
He got even more stressed when he knew his mother would find out about his grades and started having frequent anxiety attacks. Madame Pomfrey soon realized that his anxiety attacks were from school and started to help him.
She taught him healing spells, potions, how to work with herbs and cleaning spells, and meditation. The one on one lessons really helped Regulus notice his mistakes and helped him loosen up.
This was how he found out Remus was a werewolf. He loved magical creatures and read about them in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them so he was already suspicious. He soon put two and two together when he would wake up in the hospital wing and Pomfrey would be fussing over someone who wasn’t there the night before.
Also just imagine Remus and Regulus sitting on opposite beds while Pomfrey teaches them how to clear their mind. Or Remus realizing why Regulus was in the hospital wing all the time and encouraged Sirius to talk to him.
But that’s just not as fun. Why would I want to read something so sad when I can read the characters with more complex relationships and personalities. Not being canon compliant doesn’t mean you don’t understand the work, it just means you want to put your own spin on things. You want to see your favorite characters be more than just a few lines in one book.
It’s perfectly fine if you think this way just don’t insult other people for thinking differently please. It’s really not that deep.
sorry to break your hearts, but regulus was not a pure innocent baby who was forced to become a death eater.
he became death eater on his own. he wanted to. he believed in voldemort's views, was prejudiced and agreed with his parents being their favourite child.
he never lost his beliefs, if it wasn't for kreacher being in danger regulus would have never betrayed voldemort. he's a parallel to snape - if it wasn't for lily being in danger snape would've still be a loyal death eater.
and no, sirius and regulus did not get along well. making all those edits with them together only show that you have never understood what was written in the books. sirius spoke ill of regulus. they did not agree with each other and separated most likely ever since sirius became a gryffindor. no, regulus would have never begged sirius to stay and sirius would never sadly say to him he has to. sirius ran away to his real brother. pay attention to his words in ootp. SIRIUS AND REGULUS WEREN'T CLOSE (perhaps in childhood but not since hogwarts). if they were, sirius would never ran away before 17 leaving everything behind.
i'm not even gonna speak about jegulus cause it's more fucking stupid than armys on twitter. just admit you can't read.
