hayffie was a really fucking surface-level relationship. Like, Effie Trinket is not the absolute queen you think she is.

“But they really are for a greater good. The Hunger Games.”

-Excerpt From Sunrise on the Reaping, Suzanne Collins

Lenore Dove is rescuing us from Hay-fie and for that alone I love her

growing up is realizing Haymitch was so committed to the revolution because he wanted to win it for Lenore, the rebel

i just posted about this lmao

“After a while, I slide down the wall, cradling my swollen hands, panting. Pain stabs my chest, and I wonder if a person’s heart can really break. Probably. The word brokenhearted had to come from somewhere. I imagine my heart busted into a dozen glassy red pieces, their hard, jagged edges stabbing into my flesh at every beat.”

haymitch is so real for that, i feel the same way about you bro

what the FUCK do you mean Lenore Dove had geese. wtf. the fact that Haymitch raises geese after the abolition of the hunger games. oh they were so in love I’m fucking heartbroken already

you guys remember Haymitch and his geese and how much that was a "lol...geese? why the fuck would he raise geese?" meme

well... this is his girlfriend

“As I reach the Meadow, I slip under the fence and pause to catch my breath and drink in the sight of Lenore Dove perched on her favorite rock. The sunlight picks up the hint of red in her hair as she bends over an ancient piano accordion. She coaxes a melody out of the wheezy old thing, serenading a dozen geese grazing on the grass, her voice as soft and haunting as moonlight.”

SHE RAISED GEESE NOOO HAYMITCH

“The moment our hearts shattered? It belongs to us.”

YES IT DOES BELONG TO YOU MY BABY BOY

😭😀🔫

Spoiler Free Review of Sunrise on the Reaping from someone who just stayed up all night to read it and is now broken emotionally

Suzanne is not fucking around anymore. This book is about so many things but the thing that stuck out most to me was the rage I think dominates this prequel more than any other book in the series.

When the news came out a book about Haymitch was coming after years of fan requests (and a film to be developed in tandem) I’ll admit, I had my doubts.

But what Collins delivers is more brutal a gut punch than I think even the most hard core fans of this series were anticipating. In the wake of political unrest across the US and world wide, in an era of disinformation, she tells the reader clearly to look and think for themselves, and shows the atrocities that can come when we do not.

This book is about anger and injustice and it does not try to convince its reader otherwise. At times you can feel Collins shaking the reader by the shoulders: ‘See?! See what happens when you blindly accept what they tell you? See what you let them take?’.

Fans familiar with Haymitch will not be surprised by a lot of the major beats of this story but the focus on propaganda still leads to some interesting reveals. This is the goriest of Collins series and in many ways I think will be the hardest to adapt, perhaps her own rebellion against the industry that continues to profit off her work and contort her message

something that stood out to me while reading sotr is just how unreliable of a narrator haymitch is, and specifically in how he views himself. he mentions how he isnt smart repeatedly, and i almost accepted that as a character trait because it’s so often said, but his actions show otherwise. he knows the repercussions of carrying lou lou while in the arena, he just doesnt care. he isnt stupid, he’s brave. “a hero is a person who fights for liberty instead of settling for comfort.”

that moment in catching fire when haymitch jumps in front of peacekeepers for someone he loves, leading him to get reaped again…

The fact that there are several undertones that we don't understand until later in life when we're older, reading The Hunger Games is astounding.

Haymitch was never forced into anything (I'm talking prostitution) because his love and family were dead. If he hadn't pushed his friends away they would be the new collateral that Snow would hold over Haymitch's head.

Haymitch was never going to have a happy ending either way and that's all the more depressing to think about. Had Lenore survived, she would've been something to hold over him. His life was bound for depression the minute he won the games. He didn't die in the games, his chance of happiness died the minute he boarded the train.

(And perhaps that theory that Burdock's death in the mines was targeted may hold some merit, although in my opinion that was a very late accident that I'm not sure it would been connected. However, the chance that it was more of an act to squash rebellion definitely sticks, and it no doubt it still probably haunts Haymitch.)

Suzanne really making us look at the victors in the eyes and realizing that they are all victims.

Please I can't.

Suzanne collins didn't write sunrise on the reaping to give us haymitch's games...no. She wrote it to remind us that isntead of fangirling over snow cause we saw him as a young and broken boy the only words that he deserves to hear are 'fuck you'. Haymitch was the broken one. Not Katniss, not Snow not anyone...No. Haymitch was the one who suffered the most because of the game. As Lenore Dove would say:

Haymitch I love you like all fire

Who was going to tell me that Lucy Gray is a poem by William Wordsworth where she gets lost in the snow (!!!) and disappears, leaving people to wonder if she died or is still living??

"Yet some maintain that to this day She is a living Child, That you may see sweet Lucy Gray Upon the lonesome Wild. O'er rough and smooth she trips along, And never looks behind; And sings a solitary song That whistles in the wind."

I'm frothing at the mouth, how did I miss this?? This also just adds a little extra flavour to her choice of name for Haymitch's girlfriend, Lenore, because the Covey really were out there preserving literature and poetry by literally weaving it into their identities.

no one here is guilty of this crime but her name is LENORE DOVE. Not Lenore. Dove is not her middle name it’s the second half of her first name.

Double barrel names are full names. You say the whole thing. It’s like Mary-Kate Olson. It’s not Mary or Kate, it’s Mary-Kate. There’s just a space between Lenore and Dove instead of a hyphen, which is totally normal. The whole thing is her name. Just like Lucy Gray isn’t Lucy. Double barrel names are a part of Covey culture AND ALSO current southern and Appalachian culture.
