Beautiful

HC: Remus liked muggle music - and his family had a deep love for Radio.

A drabble of General Wizarding Music; History; Lyall and Hope Lupin; Remus' childhood - and his particular friendship with Sirius Black.

(1700 words; in the form of a... idk, a short story I guess?)

Wizarding World Music

Music is a simple joy, one even magical folk partake in - but not in the same way muggles do. When Wizarding culture changes so slowly (high density of older population - and they live a looong time) - they don't exactly carry music about with them for casual consumption.

When there is so much magic to study, magical folk rarely have time to learn instruments or songwriting. Music is seen as a Muggle thing. A COOL muggle thing - even Purebloods concede that the mundane folk whittling their time away on the complexities of sound has artistic merit. Most people like classical music - even as modern as Strauss and Debussy!

But in terms of wizarding music... there isn't much that is 'unique'. There's lots of folk music, telling stories of the time (wandering wizard falls in love with muggle dame and thus gets burned by her family) Or are used to remember potion recipes etc. from when being able to read was a rare skill... But such songs are not unique to Wizards. There are often Muggle versions of the same songs (Innocent dame falls for an evil sorcerer and so he was rightfully burned; or a song about trees being about their uses for carpenters rather than wand makers) - it being unclear which came first. Even the most famous modern Wizarding artists are copying the genre and styles lead by Muggles, using muggle instruments - and even electrics and electronics. Music is what you enchant instruments to play for events, to show off your Charms prowess - not to callous your own fingertips on. The proudest wizards and witches are the ones whose hands remain soft their entire lives - who can use their magic for everything...

The Lupin Family

It wasn't until Lyall Lupin met Hope that he truly begun to understand the appeal of muggle music. The simple joy of putting a record on and taking his wife's hand to dance... (cont. below)

Hope's teenage years had been set to the smooth but energetic American voices of Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Ray Charles - Frank Sinatra... Along with slightly older artists, as long as they could really jive: Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong etc. She was an avid dancer - attending dance clubs as a hobby. (She was an active, adventurous woman who enjoyed going out by herself.)

It had a sparked an interest in Lyall, who eagerly bought a high quality radio/record player - so his growing family could listen to the music and drama's of the Muggle world he had fallen in love with. He found late-night horror shows most engaging, staying up even as his wife (and soon young child) had gone to bed. He would occasionally wake them with his laughter at what Muggles considered 'frightening'... and found himself fully engaged with ongoing murder mysteries, pondering them even as he was at work. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan - the house ALWAYS had music playing on that radio. His mother would dance to it while keeping the house and his father would sing along. Remus grew up not knowing true silence... and was happier for it. After the bite... music went from a presence in his life to a necessity. As he lay in bed recovering it was all his parents could do to stop him hearing them cry: drown their noise with the radio. As they moved house every few months, the one precious possession they never sold was the radio. It kept them in muggle towns far more often than not (even if it meant Lyall had to travel further to find work) - so they could plug the radio in. (and also because magical folk were sharper at spotting werewolf symptoms)

No matter how tight money got, they couldn't sell a member of the family. Especially not one that kept Remus company.

On Full Moons sometimes music would send Remus into a rage of over-stimulation - and sometimes it would calm him. He would stop banging his entire weight against the door and scratching the paint off the walls of their rental property basements/attics/sheds... and just listen. And howl loud enough that the neighbors complain. Whenever Lyall got just a little money to spare between moves, he would brighten his son's life by buying him records - so he could listen to his favourite songs whenever he liked. He wasn't allowed to have friends... but he could have this, at least.

As his mother's frail Muggle body grew weaker from stress, when she stopped being able to attend her dance clubs (both fatigue and fear she would see people she recognized, even in different towns, and have to try and explain why she kept disappearing) Remus could still listen to music with her. They had all her favorites on record, and even when she was near bedridden (and a young house-bound Remus had to do most of the chores) he would come to her bedside and sing along with her, let her stroke his hair. Sometimes she would get up and teach him how to dance... Starting Hogwarts was a lifesaver for his family. When Remus went away, they could actually stay in the one house. Lyall could work steadily and keep money not for their next move, but for their comfort. He could even take time off to spend with his wife. Hope was still weak but doing better, not having to be the primary person preparing to hold an adolescent werewolf every month.

Every month he got a little bigger, a little stronger... every month both his parents would stay up all night, barricading everything they could... and just waiting. Listening to his movements. Hoping he didn't manage to break the door down and rip them apart. Every Full Moon was a horror story worse than any radio drama. Remus had always been just s worried as they were. They did their best to not let him know how much they suffered, as it wasn't his fault... but he could see it. He learned very early on how to mask emotions and lie to keep others happy - learned from his parents soothing him, and from him soothing them right back.

He would start skipping meals a week before the Full Moon came - and it broke his parents hearts... but it was effective. A starved growing boy made a much weaker werewolf. Lyall and Hope would want to skip their meals with him sometimes, not wanting to make the house smell like potatoes and sausages when their little boy was refraining from eating... But, hardened and matured from his illness, he would remind them they had to have their full strength on the Full Moon. They had to hold him back... and they had to run if it went wrong. They would concede... and eat small meals, at least.

Remus and his Friends

At Hogwarts - Remus didn't have to worry about ANY of this. Locked far away from anyone, safe and contained... He arrived at school small and skinny for his age, but was barely recognizable his first summer: well fed and eager to tell his parents about his new FRIENDS.

He was awkward and meek, having never really spoken to anyone but his parents before... his first friends were purebloods, whom he had little in common with. But that's part of why they liked him! He was interesting and different - and he had a passion to share with them: Music. Sirius, disillusioned with pureblood life, fell in love with Muggle culture... and fell deeply in love with Music. Back Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, King Crimson - music so unlike anything he had heard before, experimental and electronic. Even if it wasn't so much Remus' thing, who preferred rock and pop of the 60s - they BOTH loved Queen and David Bowie. James was less enthusiastic, but just happy to share something with his friends - happy to fund their obsession: Portable radios they could tinker with and listen to in the Shack... they couldn't pick up every station out there, but on a clear day they got some - and it was familiar company on Full Moons. One summer James even paid for them all to go and see a concert. (Sirius and James had to be babied through it, dressed adequately and stopped from making fools of themselves.)

James might have been less enthusiastic about music - but his knowledge of it gave him something to talk to Lily about - so when she finally agreed to go out with him, he scrambled to his friends to ask if they had any of her favourite groups on record - because he told her he liked them too but he has no idea what they are HELP

One of the best presents Remus ever got was a Walkman, after they all graduated, when Lily was pregnant and they couldn't see each-other as often anymore due to the war. When he lost everyone, in 1981... Music, once again, became his only companion. Cassettes were handy: small enough to fit many inside of even a small, cheap enchanted bag. He rarely had spending money - but like his father had with records, he would dedicate money to batteries, to new headphones and to cassettes of his old favourites. No matter how tight money was - music was a necessity. No matter where he was sleeping - a hotel, an old cottage, under a bridge... he had music with him. He never listened to the radio. He didn't want to hear how things were changing. He wanted to stay in the past.

... When Sirius came back, when he got a friend back, he parted with that walkman. Giving it to him was one of the first things he did. It was his way of apologizing for spending the last 14 or so years thinking he was a traitor. Watching his skinny, shaking hands eagerly working the machine, crying as he heard happiness he was forced to forget for 12 years...

...and they danced. Remus was never much of a dancer, though his mother tried to teach him... and Sirius only grew up with formal dancing, as a Pureblood heir expected to attend functions on behalf of the Black family.

Neither of them were graceful. It was terrible, really - a couple of men in their mid 30s moving their bodies in ways they hadn't since they were teenagers... But that memory is one of Remus' happiest. Because, once again, he had a family to share music with.

DNA Guarantee by Kodi Rhianna is Black Family coded

- more under the cut -

The first stanza gives me the vibes of Alphard, Andie, and Sirius deciding to leave and begging for their siblings to follow. The Black family drains everything unique about it's children and makes soilders, and those three didn't want to be. They tried for so long to change (beating a long dead horse) but being apart of the Black family is a life sentence.

The chorus is everyone. All of them are trapped in a cycle until they break it. "Never your baby, just a maybe," they never had kids to have kids. It was always for heirs. The Blood purity, so forth eeee

The middle stanza is Sirius and Regulus and Walburga.

It's between them and Walburga in the first part. Sirius and Regulus reminding Walburga of Alphard and herself - one trapped and lashing out and one desperately fleeing. Its also difficult because of how similar all three are - forced into positions, unhappy, lashing out. I would image that if they interacted as older, Sirius and Walburga still would have issues due to this. Even if she doesn't or didn't hit them with her hand, spells and words do it best.

It's between Regulus and Sirius in the second part. The dogs biting the bone is Sirius messing everything up with Remus and the others. "Daughter bites her words," Regulus not coming out as FmT for years due to fear. "Fight like wolves, then flee like birds," Whenever the brothers fight it's always vicious, pulling at old wounds and cruel - like their family. Then they both realize, fleeing before the other says something. "From the save pack but rivaling herds," the brothers come from the same family, but in the end have vastly different friends.

I also just imagine that when it doesn't get physical, the family does have screaming matches often. Cops would be called, the whole thing. Very early the kids learned they could use their words effectively against each other even if they couldn't against their parents. I imagine that while close, the boys and girls had a battle of shouts at least once a day (then sneak each other treats to make up for it.)

I could also imagine Sirius and Regulus trying to settle into the Potters and realizing how intertwined their family is in them. And also Reg and Sirius have to stomp to the back of the garden to have their arguments - they cannot not have them, because then they get waaaay worse.

“could never tell you what happened the day i turned seventeen. the rise of a king and the fall of a queen”

but it’s sirius leaving at seventeen (6th year, i hc that he was born in 1959) and reggie finally being accepted as trans (ftm) just so the black family could still have a male heir

everybody talks about how betrayed remus must’ve felt or how peter felt, but not how terrified and confused sirius felt. sure he was probably furious after what happened to james and lily and that might’ve helped with the fear.

but imagine how he felt when he realized he would spend the rest of his life there. that he would be forever locked in a cell where nobody would talk to him or even look at him. to know that the cold would pierce through his skin harder that his mother’s words. he was only 21 and had to face the fact that he might never feel the warmth of the sun, no less his lovers arms or his best friends’ laughter.

crazy little thing called love

"Would you all stop teasing me? This is a very serious matter for me!" James had said.

That was five minutes ago. Now Sirius has root beer trailing down his nose down to his neck while Remus was just silently holding his laughter.

About three hours ago, James had brought him, Padfoot, and Wormtail to The Three Broomsticks, saying he had a very serious matter to discuss. Everybody was being their normal self – well – everybody except James. Peter was worried for James, repeatedly asking "What is it?" over and over and over until the words seem to have turned alien to Remus. Sirius on the other hand was laughing all the way here, telling his mate to "Relax, I'm pretty sure you're just being overdramatic. And we all know I'm nothing if not dramatic. So, as the muggles say, chill, Prongs."

The next hour consists of a blur of butterbeer, root beer, and whisky. Usually, Remus would hold himself back and not drink too much alcohol. But it's been more than a week since the full moon and his hip was still screaming every time he slightly moves around. A little alcohol doesn't hurt anybody, does it? he thought.

In the middle of telling a story about how he's finally mastered the art of eyeliner, Sirius was interrupted by James who cleared his throat after being silent for the whole hour.

"I have an announcement to make," said James. HIs voice was odd. It was high-pitched and all over the place. Not very James-like really.

Sirius just stopped mid-sentence. "Breaking news, lads. Our best friends Prongsie here has finally learned how to speak again. Astonishing!"

Remus found himself rolling his eyes. Though he thought it was unusual that James was acting like this. Where was the overconfident jock he was this morning? He wasn't only acting strange since the trip here. He barely said a word at dinner. Only muttered 'nice' once and smiled to himself while the others were rambling on and on about their day. No, he was acting strange even before that. It was really after Potions, when the fifth year Gryffindors had a class with the fourth year Slytherins. Normally, James would partner up with Sirius, but this time, he immediately ran to Regulus' table.

Oh. Oh.

Remus isn't an idiot. He's seen how James always seem to want to get closer to Regulus, no matter how much he pushes him away. He's seen the way they look at each other. It's the same way he and Sirius used to stare at each other when the other wasn't looking. They still do that now, only when they lock eyes, they don't break the eye contact and instead smile at each other.

James might've not told Remus about how he fancies Sirius' little brother, but he's also heard how Regulus talks about him. How Reg always seem to be mean to James, but smile to himself when he thinks nobody else is looking.

Remus realizes what's coming up and he finally understands why James had been acting so weird.

"Go ahead, Prongs. We're sure it's not that bad." Remus had spilled out. "Whatever it is, we'll support you no matter what." He was lying. He didn't know if Sirius was going to like the news or not. What he knew though, was that James was Sirius' soulmate and even if he didn't accept it at first, Sirius would come to his senses and accept that it isn't really that bad.

"Yeah, go ahead, Jamie" said Sirius in between giggles. He hasn't seen his Moony this serious since forever. Not to mention the fact that he hasn't been this drunk since forever. Everything was a haze and Sirius could barely see James without nearly squinting his eye shut.

James took a deep breath. "Here goes nothing. All right, so... uh... you know Regulus right?" No, we don't, Remus wanted to say. Instead, he said "Yeah, go on." He could see Sirius clinging onto Peter while grinning like a huge dork. That Sirius black grin.

"Yeah! So, you and Padfoot, right? You guys are, well, together. Me and, shit how do I say this, well so, Reggie and I are like you guys now, basically" James was trying to speed up the process, but every time he tried to talk it all just came out in a jumbled mess. "Hey, Pads, care for another beer?"

Secret's out.

Remus could see that everyone is trying to wrap their head around what just happened. Peter's face dropped and he's currently staring at James, not saying a word. Sirius also seem to be processing the situation, albeit a little slowly. How drunk is he, really?

"Woah, woah, back the fuck up! So, you're saying that you, James Fleamont Potter, are dating my brother, Regulus Arcturus Black?" Sirius said. Well, more like shouted. "Like dating dating? As in 'I love you' dating?"

Let's not act like this is not what Remus had expected. There are only two outcomes from this. Either Sirius storms off, or, well, he doesn't really know what the other option is. Sirius doesn't seem like the type to lecture James about treating his brother right.

After a long, awkward silence, James finally muttered a quiet "Yeah." By now, Sirius has sat back down in his chair.

Shit, Remus thought.

After yet another awkward silence, Sirius looks at James in the eyes. Shiiiitt.

"James, do you love him?" "Huh?" "Do you love him, Regulus?" "Well yeah, I mean, I don't really know what love technically means but if I were to explain it, I would say that I love him." "Alright." Sirius turned to the bartender and asked for another bottle of beer.

That was it? James seems to be thinking the same thing. "What do you mean alright, Sirius?" He chuckled, "I mean alright. I trust you enough to know that you won't break his heart, which if you do, you won't live to see another day. But I haven't been blind, Prongs. I've seen the way you both are like when you're together."

"Plus, you're madly in loooooooooooove" Padfoot said. "He's in love, Moony, you hear that? Our James has grown up quickly."

Oh, so he isn't mad? Thank Merlin.

Remus smiled. "Oh, he's in love, all right. He loooooooooooves our dear old Regulus!" By now, Peter's woken up and decided to tease James as well. "It's a crazy little thing called love!" Peter sang.

"Don't laugh! I was genuinely terrified of what Padfoot was gonna say!" James said. Come to think of it, it was rather funny how he was all stammer and stutter a few minutes ago.

"This thing, called love," Sirius stood up and reached for Remus' hand, pulling him down from his chair. "I just can't handle it" Remus twirled him around like a ballerina.

"Crazy little thing called love," Remus muttered, then pulled Sirius close. And their lips met. For a moment, nothing else mattered. All sound has gone silent and all that Remus could think about was Sirius Orion.

"Oi! Stop stealing my moment!" he'd heard James mutter in the background. Remus couldn't care less. He could feel Sirius smiling into the kiss, which just made him pull him harder onto him.

Remus didn't know what love meant as well. He's read books, but they didn't nearly prepare him enough for what it actually felt like. Love is Sirius. Love is his Padfoot.

He pulled away from the kiss, but couldn't find the need to look anywhere else other than Sirius' eyes.

"I love you" His voice was close to a whisper.

"I love you most" Sirius muttered.

"Lads! We're still here! Don't leave me and Pete hanging like this, will ya?" James said, clapping his hands to regain their attention.

"Look, Moony, that's our looover boy," Sirius chuckled. Remus could only smile.

James shook his head. He actually looks frustrated. It makes everything all the more funnier.

"Would you all stop teasing me? This is a very serious matter for me!" James said.

Stop. No. Don't do it. Remus wanted to say. But he was too late.

"No! You're James, I'm Sirius!"

The most overtold joke in the history of jokes. For some reason, Remus though it was the most hilarious thing he's ever heard. He has heard Sirius use that joke, over and over and over again. But for once it actually seems to be funny.

It was most likely James' reaction that made Remus double over in laughter. He looks so tired of that joke. To the point where he could only close his eyes and exhale.

But that's not the thing that made Sirius laugh. No, it was Remus doubling over in laughter, which then caused his arse to bump into Peter, who fell onto the bar and landed in one of those stacks made out of shot glasses, causing the whole structure to topple over and the glasses to shatter all across the floor.

This time, it was Sirius' turn to laugh while Remus and Peter stood in horror.

"Oh no" was the only thing he could muster up. He could hear Sirius slapping James shoulder behind him while laughing, or more likely sobbing.

He turned around to face them, only to find that there was root beer running down Sirius' nose, down onto his neck and spreading all over his shirt. That's hot, he immediately thought before bursting into laughter again. Leaving Peter to face with the mess they made.

p.s this was just a fun little thing that i wanted to try out. i had an idea and it just came onto life. i had a lot of fun writing this and might try writing more in the future. apologies for grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language. hope you liked it <3

Just a reminder, James, Lily and Remus (and Peter) were planning a birthday party for Sirius but it never happened. Ans Sirius will never know because he never knew, because they could never tell him about it. He spend his birthday alone in a cell. No cake, no candles, no presents, no love, but in the cold and dark.

Sirius: you’ve always been jealous of me!

Regulus: jealous of what? Of your lack of responsibility? Your immaturity? Your total disregard for other people's feelings?

Regulus: your lack of any critical thinking? Your ignorance? Your unawareness to anyone but yourself?

Peter by taylor swift is actually just different marauders characters thinking (or talking) about Peter.

“Forgive me Peter. My lost fearless leader. In closets like cedar, preserved from when we were just kids. Is it something I did? The goddess of timing, once found us beguiling, she said she was trying. Peter, was she lying? My ribs get the feeling she did. And I didn't want to come down. I thought it was just goodbye for now.”.

- James Potter.

“You said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me. You said you were gonna grow up, Then you were gonna come find me. Said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me. Words from the mouths of babes. Promises, oceans deep. But never to keep. Oh, never to keep.”.

- Lily Evans.

“Are you still a mind reader? A natural scene stealer. I've heard great things Peter. But life was always easier on you, than it was on me. And sometimes it gets me, when crossing your jet stream. We both did the best we could do underneath the same moon, in different galaxies. And I didn't want to hang around. We said it was just goodbye for now.”.

- Remus Lupin.

“And I won't confess that I waited, but I let the lamp burn. As the men masqueraded I hoped you'd return, with your feet on the ground. Tell me all that you'd learned, cause love's never lost when perspective is earned. And you said you'd come and get me but you were 25. And the shelf life of those fantasies has expired. Lost to the lost boys chapter of your life. Forgive me Peter, please know that I tried, to hold onto the days when you were mine. But the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light.”.

- Sirius Black.

“You said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me. You said you were gonna grow up. You said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me. Said you were gonna grow up, you said you were gonna grow up. Then you were gonna come find me. Said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me. You said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me. Words from the mouths of babes. Promises, oceans deep. But never to keep.”.

- Mary Macdonald.

Remus: [after Sirius apologised for the prank] I mean.. he apologised, I should forgive him.. right?

Peter: absolutely not!

Lily: 1. Don't pick up the phone, You know he's only callin' 'cause he's drunk and alone.

Mary: 2. Don't let him in, You have to kick him out again.

James: 3. Don't be his friend, You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the mornin'.

Marlene: And if you're under him, you ain't gettin' over him.
