Inside Man mini review
So I just finished watching inside man (the one by Steven Moffat) and I have been reading all the reviews of it on here and on other sites.
and I honestly loved it (mostly because of the actors but still), the suspense was pretty great, acting was terrific, plot was decent, relatively likeable (and if not, at least semi relatable) characters.
the one thing though is that I found, which lots of people seem to disagree with, is the way that Mary Watling and Harry Watling were portrayed throughout the whole ordeal and how they were shown to deal with their emotions. I found it incredible
the way that Mary reacted; trying to find a sense of normalcy in a situation that was the opposite of normal, keeping what seemed like a calm exterior to try and keep them all from imploding with everything going on. The occasional emotional explosions when she couldn’t take it anymore.
I found it to be a very true show of what extenuating circumstances can do to someone (ie. having your sons math tutor locked in your cellar because she thinks your son is a p3d0) and the lengths people will take to have some kind of control over their lives (doing normal things to alleviate guilt and terror)
The same goes with Harry Watling (aka the vicar), though his is shown more as a delayed reaction.
it’s almost as if he doesn’t truly realize what he’s done and what’s happening, or atleast he’s ignoring it pretty damn well. He doesn’t try to keep it normal (he knows it’s nowhere near normal) or keep peace so to speak; more than anything he just shuts down.
he barely speaks with anyone and when he does he shuts them out just as quickly. Using his title as vicar as moral high ground, saying “I couldn’t have done this, I’m too good for that”, using it as a shield against the reality of the situation. And comforting others (mostly), to again show the moral high ground that he has claimed.
It shows a different approach people can sometimes take when dealing with such things (though similar to the other ways); which can lead to people entirely shutting down and avoiding the world to try and alleviate guilt (and any other emotions they may be feeling), leading to lashing out at anyone who tries to help (no matter how misguided).
No one in this show is truly a good person, but they are still people and people will react in a million different ways to different scenarios.

sumeru has straight up cyberpunk plotline tho, just coquettishly covered up in light fantasy veil. And not just because it has actual visors with internet access, but because Akasha system works like current search engines, but taken to the extreme.
like it’s no secret that google collects your data and censors and manipulates the search results based on that, but here they said “what if google had direct access to your brain tho?? and didn’t just sell collected info to advertisers, but also without your knowledge used your brainpower during sleep to fucking mine bitcoin? bc like what could you do to stop it, when the society demands you to use it?”
Akademiya is a very straightforward stand in for corporations - monopolistic force that de facto holds all the power in the country and ignores\manipulates the nominal leader (Kusanali). Ppl want to get into Akademiya bc that where all the power is cultivated, but from the researchers we meet we can see that it’s a cesspool of intrigues, with grueling demands where ppl have to abandon the themes they actually want to study bc they don’t get the funding, and often forced into military research bc of that. One woman literally ran away to the desert and paid the bandits to keep her locked in a cage bc thats better than Akademiya career fucking her over. But if you try to get away with research that is deemed a secret, they will send police enforcers to drag you back
the theme of broken and eaten dreams is also surprisingly coherent and poignant so far. We have many quests emphasizing how ppl had to gave up on their dreams and settle for career they didn’t want bc they needed to survive, and then in the Archon quests we learn that the adults don’t dream, bc their dreams are literally stolen and used by the Akademiya. They legit said that the broken dreams are not a coincidence of growing up, the system uses them as a fuel to keep up the matrix and tells you it’s your fault you couldn’t reach them
like damn, can’t wait to start telling my snob friends I saw a better cyberpunk plotline in an anime gacha than in cyberpunk2077

and i think there's something to be said be here about the medical system and how it's reflected in marlene.
doctors, whether they mean to or not, have an amazing knack for dehumanizing you and corroding your attachment to your body
Silver Lake already severed some of that attachment and ownership she feels over her body (just based off the disassociation we see and logic)
so if Joel, say, insisted on waking her up and trying more tests first. or if he wanted the situation explained to ellie before she made the decision. i think we would have ended up with the same problem
if marlene, someone ellie trusts to keep her safe and has that connection to her mother, reaffirmed the idea that ellies body was a commodity, she would have chosen to die
even if joels decision making process wasn't this layered (which it wasnt), the situation still had a lot of nuance that is ignored typically

i just. think a Lot about how the idea of “well ellie should have had a choice!” often ignores the implied fact that ellie, on the day she was entering the hospital, was struggling with some degree of suciidal ideation to the point where joel opened up about his attempt and ellie’s immediate response was:
“i know why you’re telling me this”
because she’d been so nonresponsive, so far removed from her usual self in her depression, that joel was worried for her and thought the story of him recovering from his attempt, feeling that hopeless, would resonate with her.
“yeah, i reckon you do” – that’s….yeah.
and she goes for the “time heals all wounds” to wrap it in a bow– the cliche of “it gets better, you just have to give it time” that we give to people struggling especially with suicidial thoughts and joel in a moment of rare vulnerability says “it wasn’t time that did it” – him telling her that he loves her and cares about her, that that is what healed him, that that is why he’s opening himself up because he doesn’t want her to hurt like he did. that it’s not just going to be time, he’s here and he’s not going anywhere whatever healing looks like for her. and it hits her like a gut punch because it’s the last thing she’s expecting and the thing that breaks through to her.
so if you’re asking the teenager with sucidial ideation, who has spent her entire life being told by an institution that she is inherently expendable and her life is worth nothing, coupled with her mom’s friend echoing that same sentiment – of course she would have said yes. marlene with the “what would she want?” gee i wonder how putting her in a system that sees her as expendable would affect like worldview on top of countless traumas! and joel is the one person in her life who does not see her as worth sacrificing, who would mourn her and care about her to the point where he’s unwilling to mourn her even if it means she hates him.
when people we love and care about go through something like that, we don’t go “oh i guess it’s your choice”. it’s “i will drag you kicking and screaming to go on with me if i have to because i love you and i don’t want to do this without you, because you are worth more than how you’re feeling right now.” it’s what tommy did for joel. he dragged him out of that ditch, took him to a medic camp even though joel swears up and down it’s what he wants and never lets him do it again and he can’t go on and do this. it’s what joel does later for ellie.
so yeah.

Meet Iromi Hitokoe! Hero name Iris, quirk Colorful Voice!
She's a support course student that loves hanging around the hero course. Her quirk allows her to ingest paint and depending of the color it influences the emotion of whoever she speaks to, including herself! Although she has some toxic resistance, too much paint will make her nauseous, and other poisons are still dangerous. She is more into costume designs rather than gear creation and tries to make the best outfit for each student. ( i'm making my friends BNHA OC's :] )
She spends time around the hero course students armed with a camera, a note book and a sketch book to create designs for each student. She will also bring beta support gear made by fellow students to be tested during the hero course training.
( I can never just finish a design, so these will not be consistent :} )
