Self-harm awareness day

Today is self-harm awareness day. It is a very important day for me as a former self-harmer, and when I was at my lowest I thought no one knew how I felt, but now I know better. This is a day for people to learn more about the causes of self-harm and the risks. Self-harm is no different than any other unhealthy coping mechanism like drugs, alcohol, and many others. Just because someone self-harms does not make them any different from an addict that needs help. So, if you are a self-harmer and If you’re not sure where to turn, call the S.A.F.E. Jason and Bart tropes #4

Jason obviously has things he's ashamed of, even though he's this ass-kicking God we all love, he still has his demons. One of those demons being certain scars. Ever Hero, vigilante, and Villain has those certain scars that they don't want people to see or know of. For Jason, it's the ones from the Laz pit and when he died. He hates them, wishes he could get rid of them, but they're a part of him.

Bart has scars of his own, one's he wishes to never show. That being, all of them. He shows people his outter shell, this fun, party loving speedster that's always quick with a joke. In reality he hides most his pain behind that mask because no one expects the outgoing one to be the most damaged, but that's just what he is. Damaged. So damaged he fears peoples reactions to his real self and became his character "impulse". The scars from the future, from being enslaved and tortured, from fighting back and losing so much. He hardly looks at himself because of them. He may be quick to heal but the scars run deep.

Jason and Bart find a mutual understanding in not wanting to share the scars stories and be complacent in showing them, but not showing off. It's better that way.

saw someone point out that Tim wasn’t immediately jumping to become Robin, and that he had gone to Dick multiple times before deciding that he himself had to step in. I don’t think Tim blames Dick but I do think there’s a tiny bit of resentment because he doesn’t fully understand why Dick couldn’t just come back to Gotham in order to help Bruce instead of a complete stranger doing it.

I can't leave LFLS alone today after that last chapter. Here's a color portrait of some ninpo-unlocking Leo after a long road of healing (a long, loooooong road).

It's called Karai's Last Gift. In the LFLS timeline I HC that instead of the traditional black wrappings, Karai's spirit gives Leo white ones when he unlocks ninpo. She wouldn't do anything to trigger his PTSD. It's a very fitting color as it resembles journeys, spiritual connection, and cleansing.

I cried a couple of times on this one. Once because it's emotional and once because I hate vector layers with my whole fucking heart. I'm very satisfied with how it turned out considering I doodled it so quickly. Like less than 4 hours.

Uh, yeah… You didn’t…?“ Toph cuts him off and says, "Came up in passing with the other guys.” Toph casually makes herself a seat out of rock and sits down next to him. “Must be pretty badass if everyone assumes I know it’s there, too,” she continues. Zuko looks aside awkwardly and says, “… It’s on my face.” “Ah.” Toph replies.

Zuko says, “Maybe you could… feel it?” “Huh?” says Toph. “I guess, if I concentrate hard enough.” Zuko reaches for Toph’s hand. “Uhm, just with your hand, if you want,” he says. “I don’t think I can describe it.” “… Gotcha. Guide my hand then, boss,” Toph says. Zuko does so, and there’s a pause as Toph touches his scar. The fire reflects in her eyes.

As Toph pulls her hand away, Zuko says, “…. You know, my left eye is almost blind, too.” “Seriously?!” Toph exclaims. “Why aren’t we a tag team yet?! The blind bandit and the half-blind dweeb!” “Come on…!” Zuko moans. End ID]

i’ve had this comic sketched out for months but only decided to finish it now, it’s based on something i drew a couple years back of toph and zuko….don’t think too hard on when or how this takes place because i don’t really know either! it’s just a concept i’ve always wanted to draw

I’m not trans, but i had a breast reduction at 22 and because of that I have the same anchor scars that many trans men get after top surgery.

I like to think of them as my “scar brothers,” or “brothers in scars” if you will. Scar Siblings for my nonbinary peeps.

I think it’s neat.

If I was going to say anything else it would be a note on said scars -

If you find your top surgery scars healed super thick and you find that upsetting, you can get them redone several years after your initial surgery and they will heal better the second time. (My insurance covered it as a “follow up operation” ymmv) (also no shame if you like your scars thick, that’s totally cool too).

The reason for this (to my limited knowledge) is because your first surgery is a much deeper heal. The cut went deep, and a bunch of stuff was removed, so the body had to heal all the way from the tissues to the skin all at once. Deeper cuts often end up in bigger scars.

However!! If you come back a few years later after the initial surgery has fully healed and settled (I think mine was 3-5 years? Not sure) and get the scars redone (they cut the scar out and sew up the unscarred skin on both sides) the scar generally ends up much smaller and less noticeable.

My first scars were big, ropey, and purple in some areas. They were very obvious and the keloids would hurt when I hit them by accident.

My second set of scars are much MUCH better. In some areas it’s hard to even notice them. They’re flat and the coloring is barely notable. I have one or two spots that are thicker but on the whole, the scarring is much less noticeable and less painful.

So just something to keep in mind if the look or feel of your scars bothers you.

Best of luck all my scar siblings!! (and wear your scar tape post surgery, it helps keep those scars flat and provides support to the skin so it doesn’t get shuffled about or pulled apart by movement and gravity and helps control keloiding)

"Sharpen and Blur"

This is one of those pieces that... doesn't really have a deeper meaning behind it. The body is my favorite subject for art, so the way that scar tissue can alter it fascinates me. I realized I'd never done a painting of someone with a facial scar and decided to do one. As the painting progressed, I started thinking of how my great-grandmother described the experience of having cataracts -- she said it was like seeing through layers of veils. So I smeared the hell out of the background and added layers of matte medium over the sections of the image that I wanted to push backwards.

And so that's how this came about.

This is the second part of the monster drawing.

The story goes that there are two islands, one of humans and another of monsters; and there are monsters trading in human trafficking, although I don't know with whom since I didn't make the story. The monster with the skull manages to rescue this girl and seeks to return her to her island, but everyone will stand in their way.

From what I understand she was a slave before the rescue, so she has several scars on her body, her story is quite cruel. Although I don't know how she got the glasses. I like to think she found them, while she was escaping, from survivors who didn't get very far before dying.
